Re: Project Tyclone SS: 85 Jimmy, LT1, AWD, etc

It has been soooo hot here in Texas that I have had no desire to go out in the shop and work on swapping the dash from one truck to the other.

When the Tyclone is done it would be fun to autocross, but I would have to upgrade to coil overs ($1500) and maybe a 4 link ($$$$$) to be competitive. So I decided to buy a cheapy $850 Miata and go play. Well the Tyclone has looked so lonely, I had to make it a mini-me. And thats what I did. I bought the Miata on Aug 11th afnd its just about ready to go now.

The day it was delivered to me

shuggs, you make it look easy like a 30min tv show:rotf: good work. at the very least you should super size a syty motor in the miata. since you super sized the truck with a LT1.

good job on the truck!

So I had the mechanic shop next door put the Jimmy up on the lift and go over all the steering and suspension. Got everything tightened up. I found a local exhaust shop I plan to try out soon and hopefully get a nice exhaust installed!

I also took some pictures with a 96 Grand Sport and my Miata. lol

Back to the dreaded dash project. I have the dash all but removed. I have all the bolts and screws removed, I followed the directions on BlazinLow.com. http://www.blazinlow.com/index.php?what=tech/dash/dash It still is not free. I don't really want to force it and break anything. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Everything removed

Find DaveP's method on here, best method for removing a dash and all the wiring will come out with the dash, the way the factory put it in.
My first advice is pull the column, it needs to be out if you don't want to break the dash, trust me, saying this by experience.
Second, there is a bolt that goes sideways behind the steering column, another reason it needs to be removed. It is the same 10mm bolt that is in each corner and in the middle.
If you are going to try and remove it and leave the wiring in, there are a bunch of clips along the back of the dash that are a PIA to get at, another reason to pull with all wiring. All this involves is pulling the main harness plugs on the left side of the engine bay, undoing the two 7mm screws and then the whole fuse panel will push back and come out with the dash.
You then can work the dash back, unplug the hvac in the center, any accessory plugs in the fuse box, radio antenna, interior light plugs, white wire, one on each side, and I know there will be a few more, but really easy to do and well worth it to learn to do it this way.

Re: Project Tyclone SS: 85 Jimmy, LT1, AWD, etc

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this horrible dash project with your replies. Those of you who pointed out the hidden, sideways 10mm bolt to the right of the steering column that I hadnt removed helped solve the stuck dash issue. I got that bolt out and unplugged the remaining harnesses and voila, 1 1/2 hours later it was out. lol

Now I have a new issue. Once I got the dash out I realized how much stuff goes behind the dash that my Jimmy is missing, Vacuum lines, wires, insulation, etc. I have a lot of swapping to do now. I have a mechanic friend of mine staying late with me after work to help me on the swap. What a PITA!!

Any suggestions on removing all the vent stuff? (see last pic)

On to the pictures.

The trucks sitting in the operating room, one donating organs, one waiting to receive them.

So this is the dash that I just removed. It will help me rebuild my Typhoon dash and reinstall it, plus its donating all the hardware and misc pieces to the project,

And the Typhoon dash...
jsw_img_2606.jpg

Everything that you see here needs to be removed and swapped. I cant seem to get out all the plastic vent parts without breaking them. Any suggestions?

 You must have the patience of a saint...and lots of long nights. I've got one little oil return line to replace and I've been putting it off for YEARS! :rotf:

Do you ever think, "I shoulda just painted the green/grey Ty blue and white and I'd be done with this project" ?? Looks like a royal PITA....

Re: Project Tyclone SS: 85 Jimmy, LT1, AWD, etc

The latest updates are from last night. We worked on it for about 12 hours yesterday. My buddy Junior came over and took control of the situation. I became the helper and we got ALOT done!

We started by going through the wiring harness and testing everyting to make sure it worked. This required hooking everything up. We found a few ground issues, blower motor, headlights, tail lights, alarm, etc. We pulled the doors to wire them with the Typhoon door harnesses and run the wires through the jambs. Also hooked up the door/courtesy light switches.

jsw_img_4105.jpg

We got all the lights to work. Brake lights, blinkers, headlights, high beams, etc all funstional!

jsw_img_4107.jpg

Then we pulled the whole harness back out...

The heater core was next... you never know. I dont want to EVER do this again! So I bought a new one.

jsw_img_4100.jpg

jsw_img_4108.jpg

We finished gutting the old Blazer and pirating as much as we could from it.

jsw_img_4103.jpg

Then started putting all the dash ducting back in. Ran the vacuum lines and one even goes through the firewall under the cowl. That meant that we needed to pull the hood to pull the cowl AGAIN. So we got that all buttoned up.

jsw_img_4114.jpg

and then Junior got the whole harness installed in the Typhoon dash using the Blazer dah as an example.
