Project Never Ends

Re: Project Never Ends

Made more progress last night. In an attempt to find the mystery oil leak I pulled the fuel pump blockoff plate back off, resealed, and installed. It looked like from under truck it might be causing some issues and was easy thing to do.

My other thought is I don't have the full breather system I want on yet, wondering if crankcase pressure is just building up enough and forcing it out. More checks to come tonight and this weekend.

Good news though is I finished a task I have put off for awhile. Routing the wastegates back into the downpipes. Took me about 3 hrs, wasn't hard to do just took awhile as I had to assemble each side at least twice checking and tacking things toghether.

Old pic before they were routed, but you can see what I had to do. New pics to come this weekend of all the progress.

The only real big items left now are some suspension adjustments front and rear, wheel wells and making them fit, cleaning them up, and of course tuning, tuning, tuning.

A few small projects here and there also but things are moving along.

Re: Project Never Ends

Having a running driving truck/car sure makes it easier to tackle the smaller things.... At least for me anyhow.. knowing it runs/drives and all your doing is improvements and adjustments to make it better.... Before long your list of to-do's will evaporate and you'll be done.
Keep up the great work!

Re: Project Never Ends

Finally got some more video up. Not that exciting I know.

VIDEO

Yesterday my truck decided to really kick my ass though. It was running like a champ also, at 0 psi it is really moving, haven't done much boost yet. ECM decided to I think burn out a driver, and the fuel pump got jealous and decided it didn't want to work yesterday either. Glad I just put 18 gallons of gas in the tank I need to now remove so I can check the fuel pump out. At least I don't have to drop the tank to do it now that it is sumped and external pump. Fuel pump was my last worry though. GRRR

Bugs Bugs, but slowly working through them. Forecast is rain all week anyways, so why not spend more time underneath drenched in gas thinking about how good it WAS running.

Truckless. For now.
Re: Project Never Ends

That sounds soooooo goooood coming from a Typhoon... It really sounds quite natural. Can't wait to see the "more to come" parts as you get the bugs worked out.

Nothing to extreme.

Has this sump

Welded to tank, outlets facing rear of course.

Then I have a weldon 2015 pump mounted on the frame where the stock load leveler was. -12 AN from tank to pump, -10 to rails, -8 return.

Re: Project Never Ends

So after fixed the bad bearings in the fuel pump and rewiring that from almost scratch (one of the things I told myself I would do later, today was later).

Had to resolve the initial problem that happened last weekend. Turned out with my ecm on the floor and some "test" jumpers I had been playing with, they came out lost connection, something. Ended up fixing another ecm with upgraded drivers tonight so I now have a spare ECM which is nice.

Tune was way off, probably due to more fuel pressure with the upgraded fp wire, and it was never really close to begin with. Did ~4 autotunes and lots of manual tweaking. I can say 2 steps forward 1 back on tuning with forward progress being made.

Tried the line lock out with ~2psi boost or less. I think an axle didn't like it much, didn't break but got a vibration I didn't have before. Just gotta smile and fix the bugs as they come up, i knew there would be a lot of them.

On the other news, I pulled into the gas station (as I had to drain tank to fix pump). Within 30 seconds guy pulls up and asks me if it is a typhoon, I just said yea. Didn't want to get into details as I could tell he didn't have all 52 cards in his deck.

Just as I turn around 3 guys in a diesel truck pull up, ask me what motor is in it. So I get to thinking to myself do I tell them V6, V8, stock, 4cyl... I have a hard time lying so I said 350 V8. 1 guy turns to the other and yells TOLD YOU. (I bet he thinks they came stock). So as they are laughing I had to throw in 2 turbos also. SILENCE from the 3 hillbillies..........

Shortly there after as I am trying to get the pump going still, they want to see the engine. Now against my better judgement probably but with 5 yrs of hard work you want to show it off somewhat. So I open the hood, You could hear a pin drop for a few seconds, well I really heard 3 jaws drop. Wish I had a camera.

So as they are talking asking me questions, Mr. 22 cards in my deck comes back as he was couples pumps away, asks what motor I have in it. I learned my lesson so I just said it's all stock. The 3 guys agreed with me, and Mr 22 cards believed it all.

So as I finally get in the truck to leave guy comes over and wants me to spin the tires. I took the time to explain AWD won't happen tonight. He then wants to race me for cash which I agreed but said give me a few weeks to get tuned.

I tried to keep the outside stock but I guess a few people still know what they are, of course I can't really sneak in with the exhaust like it is either.

Some 17yr old was telling me about making his 91 tahoe into a typhoon also. His friend said "well look like one" and his reply was "No it will be one". I knew then he was related to Mr 22 cards, but had only 2 cards and they were the jokers.

Had my 7 yr old daughter with me the whole time also, although she was asleep for most of it.

Taking video camera and friend next time I go out this could get interesting.

At least I don't feel alone driving with my steering wheel at a weird angle... :)

You're gonna have a bunch of fun in that truck if everything stays together... I can't wait for more video!

Re: Project Never Ends

When guy's like that come up to you it's neat to show off and scarry since you really don't want anyone messing with your stuff or getting any "Ideas".

I'd taken the Camaro up to a local cruze in on a Friday night last year. Parked next to a buddy's nitrous Camaro. My car's awful quiet... so no real eye browse raied.
Talked for awhile and my buddy with the Camaro asked if I'd give his friend a ride. I said sure.
Went down the road ... made a pass... He was grabbing for the roll bar real quick. :)
Came back... and it was about time to leave. My buddy told the other guys there to take a look at the car.. it was still running ... Opened the hood and nothing but Holy $hit... WTF is that!
That's nothing what we were expecting.. then all the questions...ect...

That'll be awsome if the other guy wants to run once your dialed in.
Glad the fuel pump issue is resolved!
Keep on killing the bugs! Soon you'll be critter free and flyin'!!!!

Re: Project Never Ends

WAHOO!!!!

Drove the truck into work today. Probably drove it around for an hour last night also tuning. The 84# injectors are fighting me a bit on tuning, and of course trying to watch laptop, drive and everything else doesn't help. But the tune is getting there. Still got some drivability gremlins I am working on tuning, then we can get the boost dialed in a bit better. Still haven't hit 100% TPS yet, probably 50% and I have seen 3 digit #'s on the speedo come up rather quickly.

So nice to be driving it more than just around the block.

Re: Project Never Ends

Did some more tuning last night. Got some tips from Nolan which helped me a bit. Learned some new things even.

Making progress, up to 50% throttle now and ~4psi boost. She really moves at those speeds.

What are you controling the engine with Jeff?

Stock ecm (with upgraded drivers) and code$59.

No base tune even close to my combination obviously, so starting from ground zero and being very picky.

boost = happy

coool. im suprised you wouldnt go with a stand alone unit like an AEM, FAST or BS3, or a Tec 3

Project is on a budget #1.

#2 didn't really see any big advantages to convince me to spill out another $2k.

I kindof like having an extra ECM with me as a spare also.

I am sure it may have helped get the tune dialed in a bit faster, but I suspect with code59 in the end it won't be much difference if any.

With my truck i was going to try and run a stock ECM but I decided against it because of it being a BBC with a little bit of boost. and i didnt want to run a Distributor,

so i bought a Tec 3R because of the control i will have over the engine and the coil pack's
