Re: Project Never Ends

Been busy so not much new. I do plan to mess with it a bit tonight, and hopefully make a run or 2 down track again with some better times this time.

I did get the drivers side breather can, hose and filler all welded and installed. Still an oil leak so motor might need to come back out to seal oil pan up soon.

O yea I need to ship a box to you that is STILL sitting in the tahoe.

Re: Project Never Ends

Cool ! Hope you get it out and have some more fun.....

We had a heap full of stuff happen all at once here... Evicting renters at the rental house and termite problems at our house that ended up needing a few walls taken out and replaced.... Ugh... I hate house work... If I could only weld stuff back together I'd be ok.
Thanks for sending off the intake.... I'll get it up to the machiene shop and possibly put Heahter's truck on the to-do list soon.
My Camaro engine is done. I've got to go pick it up Friday.
Heads are in FL at Champion. I'll hear what needs to happen with them today.
Hope it won't be too long before it comes out..... Just in time for 10.00/gallon fuel. Yippie.
So much for having pump gas be affordable.

Re: Project Never Ends

Just got back from the track.

1st run 4-5psi launch, truck got sideways.

2nd run I cleaned tires via small AWD burnout launched at 0psi.

Went 7.4 @ 95mph. Should have video of this run this weekend.

3rd run, spun tires again to get them clean. Launched at 2psi, max boost ~6psi.

1.62 60ft
7.1149 1/8 mile
97.18 MPH

Not bad and the 60ft if finally what I would call acceptable to me.

Next time I plan to clean tires again and try 3 or 4 psi. Track didn't say anything after that run, but I didn't try to run again either. I think a cage is going to be needed very soon.

Video of the first 2 runs will be posted at some point. 3rd run wasn't tapped.

Funny though the first half of the night nobody noticed me, which is what I wanted.

After the 7.4 run I had a few people asking about the truck, if it was stock, etc.

I just told them it isn't stock, stock is 15psi and I am running 5psi. It takes people awhile but then they get a funny look on their face.

I wish we had the 3rd run on tape. The guy I was racing against was a total idiot. Took forever for him to figure out how to get ON the track without driving through water. Then he proceeds to do a burnout, not in the burnout box, but just past the starting line.

Too bad his 400hp camaro only ran a 8.57

Re: Project Never Ends

I rode about 30 miles in this beast on the way to the track. For only running 5lbs of boost and having a tune that is far from dialed in its incredible. The WOT highway blasts are insane as well as the launches. I felt some bars in the back of the seat that I didn't know where there. I think that once Jeff gets some time to work out the bugs this thing will turn some impressive numbers.

Very nice....keep choppin it down. Must feel pretty good to turn that kind of time with that little bit of boost. :)

Re: Project Never Ends

Well last night was a first. I have known Dobrick for 7 years. The first time he actually has driven my truck.

Probably only the 3rd time he rode in it.

Good news is him and I tackled some of the annoying tune issues. Most are gone. The few that remain appear to be minor. Found the big one that kept bugging me.

Yesterday I even spent a few hours polishing the turd. The paint really took a toll sitting in the garage for 5+ yrs, stuff stacked on it, dirt, paint overspray, you name it. It is polishing up decent though. Hood is terrible, and a few pieces of cladding could stand a respray but that will have to wait until after homecoming.

Had one stumbling block last night, but should be an easy fix. Gotta do some research as to why. WOT upshifting isn't working as planned and we didnt' change anything. Worked perfect sat. I let Dobrick feel some power and it acted up. Shifts perfect cruising around though.

Heading to Bowling Green Saturday. See what she can do for a 1/4mile trip down the track.

I have to say, I'm somewhat impressed with the condition of the truck as compared to the amount of time it's been on the road. I figured he wouldn't have a good streetable tune for quite some time after getting it back together based on the sheer number of changes as compared to where it was when he took it apart. Ask any of the local guys and they'll tell you I'm picky as hell about the drivability of a tune. I was able to confidently drive the truck last night with no major stumbles, pops, misses, or stalls. If I wasn't sitting there staring at the laptop I wouldn't have known of the lean/rich areas in the tune. I did notice the gas gauge plummeting rather quickly though. I'd guess a 5-6mpg average at this point !!!!!! With that said, I think the speedo moves from 0-100 just as fast. It's definately making some power, as this is the first truck I've driven that will leave some tire tread behind on a 4lb launch.

Jeff still has some work ahead of him, but now that I've beat the idea of big projects out of his head for this season I think he'll be just fine. With an eye explicitly towards driveability, and perception of truck it already looks better this week than it did last week. Although I am still going to deduct 2 points for having the console in pieces, and the ECM on the floor :D :D

Here's some crappy cell-phone pics to prove that he was actually waxing/polishing the truck. Looked alot better in person, but still has some room for improvement. Sitting in the garage for 5+ years really did hurt the paint. Although it does have significantly fewer dents than my POS truck!

Re: Project Never Ends

Don't know if it's been answered in this thread but when tuning a tt vehicle, Do you have only one wb 02 sensor on one downpipe?

Mine has two on the floor. Does that earn me cool points?

Mine's safely stored back up in the stock location after taking your suggestion to use Moate's Chip Extender....works perfect and now people can ride with me!

RACE REPORT

First time at the 1/4 mile track.

The weather left us wondering if we would actually get to run. Reports of storms coming in, thunderstorms, etc. Being the day was still nice we headed the 2 hours south down to Bowling Green.

Towed the trailer with Dobrick's Yukon just to compare against my older tahoe. His truck gets 11.7 MPG towing, with me or him driving either way. I will say it does tow nice and probably a bit more comfortable than mine, although it is newer.

Arrived at bowling green, unloaded the typhoon and headed to tech. As usual nothing to worry about. Bowling Green has got to be one of my favorite tracks though. Since the last time I was there, they have installed scales so you can weigh your truck.

My typhoon with 1/2 tank of gas (per gauge) and me in it (230lbs) is exactly 4,000 lbs. Yep I knew it would be a heavy pig and it is.

As I was driving back from tech I heard a clicking. I knew the sound and quickly got back knowing for some reason a rocker arm had worked loose. With the help of Dobrick, Tydriver, and John B within a few minutes that was all fixed. On my list before homecoming is to recheck all valves, and install the stud girldes back on to help prevent this in future.

Due the the c5 calipers, I had a wheel spacer on my front left wheel. I just didn't like the stud engagement so we pulled the spacer off. Item #2 before homecoming is all new studs (longer) and new lug nuts all around.

First run up, didn't even hook up the laptop. Tryed to do a burnout and it didn't want to spin so I knew the track was much better than the local 1/8th mile. First run is a 11.609 @ 114.91. (Best time of the night also

)

Heading down track I just felt the truck wasn't like it is normally. At each shift it felt it was laying over. 1/8th mile ET was .4 seconds down from my best 1/8th, and 5mph down. I suspect now it was the weather. But in an effort to try some things I lowered the shift points for the next run 200 rpm.

Similar results, 11.7X (timeslips at home)

So next run, I raisded the shift point 150 over the first run. Again 11.7X

Datalogged a couple runs (tunerpro logs if you want to see them www.nwstp.com/jsm/ty/bgreen.adl) and showed it knock 2 deg pulling up to the line, with zero knock all the way down track and AFR solid at 11.8. Safe tune.

By this time Jeremy Duncan had arrived to provide moral support, or just cause trouble not sure. We agreed to throw some more timing at it. Previous runs were 20 deg at 7psi. Added 2.5 deg.

Again ran a 11.7X no knock though.

So I add 1. deg more timing and again 11.7X

As I like punishment somewhere in the mix I threw Jeremy in there to make a pass. Keep in mind he has never been in the truck with full boost yet. He drove it a couple months ago and rode in it 5+ yrs before that. Nothing like saying go race it.
Ok.gif

He made a pass, went 11.6X (again dont have the slip with me).

I felt good a professional drag racer didn't best my time, and he is a bit lighter. I took the keys away after that to make sure he didn't best my time though.

Last run of the night, my alternator decided it was done. 500 miles on it and already broke. O well easy fix.

The tune Dobrick and I did on it the other night for drivability is working great. Truck starts and idles better than it ever has. So I am really happy with that. I think the lack of intercooler, bad weather just slowed me down.

So time to install the intercooler, and see if we can turn up the boost.

We used to say were like some bizarre cult around here... everybody had the ECM on the passenger floor. A passer-by remarked - "Why is their dash torn apart on all of 'em?"

Hot, sticky weather at Bowling Green? Naaaaaawww.

It was trying to remind you why you need an intercooler. 10 psi and cooled boost should be a pretty effortless 10.x.
