Re: Project Never Ends

Ok, 4l80e removal from the truck, start to loaded in the back of my tahoe in 70 minutes. This is on jack stands (which we all have come to love), and a creeper. I did have a helpful GF handing me tools, of course I have all the sizes memorized at this point.

Leaving in 2 hrs on a 6 hr drive.

Re: Project Never Ends

Drove all night, got here at Rosslers at 6:30 am. Set my alarm for 7:05, by 7 guy was knocking on car window ready to get started. Unloaded trans climbed back in truck and slept until 9, walked in and was met by Carl Rossler, he showed me about 10 things wrong/bad. Some I did, some I did not. They are putting it back together now, billet direct drum, goes on dyno and I will be on my way home. Probably walk even worse after but trans will be good.

Having never dealt directly with Rossler before I can say so far I am impressed and very happy. He does charge more than some, but this doing things 3 times sucks also.

Re: Project Never Ends

I'm know letting the extra funds go is a little hard to deal with....but I also know the feeling will be good knowing you've got a solid piece going back in the truck.

Re: Project Never Ends

Just got home. No issues at all with the tahoe. The bill was a bit more than I wanted, well double but its done.

Carl Rossler is a stand up guy, at one point he wanted to throw my trans away and start fresh so many little things were wrong.

Some I did, so my fault, some well it had to be either GM or GB. Carl told me it looked like the guts had been swapped from several different trans. I know I supplied GB a good core that wasn't a hodge podge.

The trans brake was not fully installed, springs and valves left out, so that was $75 to buy those parts again.

2nd gear clutches were fried, direct drive was also. I went ahead and put a billet direct drive drum in it for safety reasons ($650).

Carl had 1 guy full time on my trans from 7am until 4pm, and himself and another guy part time helping out. I would recommend him any day, he was fair I thought and fully honest. I didn't try to haggle price.

Even as I was leaving he offered to keep trans and tear it all back apart for a 2nd gear piston upgrade if I wanted and ship it to me Monday for just the cost of parts.

One thing I learned which goes against the car forums is he will ONLY build the early model trans 92-95. He won't touch a late model as his. Mine was a 96ish. Receipt specifically said he didn't recommend the 96 and newer. He said GM changed the OD sprag making it weaker and weaker, and the OD planetary seems to suffer lack of lube in the newer ones. Just something to note.

Re: Project Never Ends

Trans got put in Saturday with Mike Hardman's help. 2hrs start to finish and driving again. Shifts are MUCH firmer, guess that would be expected with non burnt clutches.

Even drove the thing in to work today.

Now if I could find all those damn oil leaks I would really be happy. Changed valve cover gaskets last night, did some grinding on covers themself to make sure the intake wasn't holding them up off the gaskets.

The good news is the underside of my truck will NEVER rust in the near future, actually it looks new underneath once you wipe the oil film off.

Motor itself is running very strong.

I moved my rear crossbar for cage up last night also, NHRA and Open Road Race rules spec it to be level to barely below your shoulder. My bar was 4" or so below the slot in the seat which for me is slightly below my shoulders. The bar is now level with the slots.

The tune changed also with the new trans, this is the 2nd time we have noticed a rebuilt trans to change the tune. Those thinking you can get an off the shelf chip it just doesn't work, when a transmission REBUILD will change a tune, how will it not be effected from vehicle to vehicle?

Worked on tow rig this weekend and trailer, did a test tow with brakes now working for trailer. Trailer was empty but motorhome I think drives better with the trailer than without. I did measure and my total length is 56ft. Takes awhile to get used to that. Guess I have from here to texas and back to get comfortable.

Re: Project Never Ends

Just because I ran across this file while updating another post here I thought I would put up a link of something I did with my truck ~11 years ago. OG syty's will remember the fun we had back then, newer syty peeps might get a good chuckle.

There is a lot of background to the story, involves someone from past syty fame named Ivan, some friendly words between NWSTP group and Chitown group at the time. (I did live near seattle then).
