Re: Project Never Ends

We already have a plan in the works. Should be a short recovery.

Good news and not so good news.

Engine, well it needs to go to Dr. now. But looks like a slight change in plans for now and we are going to throw a junkyard vortec motor in and turn up the boost in time for shindig. Rework current motor over winter.

I think you are going to be surprised what you will get out of the boneyard vortec. A healthy one should survive your goals.

I have some Yamaha Rhino cage couplers. they are 2 piece and are great for unbolting cages that are welded in but you still want to be able to remove the cage itself. i could send you pics, i have a bunch of these i could give you if you need some, dunno if that is the rout you want to go but giving you options

Were your old heads Vortecs? Intake manifold gonna line up...?

Nope, have welder, milling machine, have done a few syty vortec intakes can probably make it work.

Pulilng off trailer it had full oil pressure again, so I am crossing fingers it isn't hurt too bad.

On a side not MSD install has caused me to loose ALDL connection. Turn truck off/key on connects fine.

Engine running get a sample about every 2 seconds.

So what exactly happened to the engine? It lost oil pressure & you shut it down?

Re: Project Never Ends

Trucks last pass sounded fine going down the track, but it seemed every run we made it kept going slower, even though the 60ft times were getting slightly better due to tuning of the launch.

When I pulled onto the return road I heard a little extra noise, like a minor rod knock (if rod knocks can be minor) looked down and oil pressure gauge was really low, guessing 10psi. Normally is 40.

So I took it as easy as possible back to trailer, loaded it up and came home.

Yesterday unloading it, had the normal 40psi and no un usual noises so I don't think it is hurt really bad. But either way it is coming out this week to look inside. A decision will then be made to go vortec or fix whats broke.

On a good note, the 4 link adjustment made a big difference, and if nobody has raced with a 2step, they are very neat toys. Cut a .020 light and 1.6X 60ft on one of the passes.

Even Jeremy who can react with the best of them was impressed. Its all skill I tell you.

Before the suspension changes if I left with more than 2psi it would spin. Sat I rolled through water box, pulled up to line with water still on the tires. NO SPIN.

didn't spin all night, except for the burnouts.

Pretty much limits you to vortec heads for your rebuild, when you get that far. I guess it's easier to buy a SBC manifold with EFI bosses.

Mike Lee is having the same issue... Where are you grounding it, and I'd also get a big-whompin stereo filter cap to put across the input power. Maybe even 2.

Makes me wonder about the quality of the MSD boxes they're selling these days... Chinese?

This is what just happened on my lt1, sounds fine when cold but once heated up oil pressure falls and a slight rod knock begins. Ends up the bearings are toast and just a crank swap should fix it. But each motor is different hopefully this is all it is on yours.

And congrats on the suspension front once really dialed in the true potential should be unleashed.

Right now I have 041 casting heads. On a good day, max porting they probably flow about the same as a bone stock vortec head. Sucks being I have over 2g in these damn heads but the truth doesn't change that nor will investing more money.

So if the junkyard vortec goes in, yes it will then become a vortec headed motor from there on out.

MSD is grounded to fender I believe. Will try to ground to frame. Going to run another ground on ecm also. Obviously gotta fix the motor first, it will connect all day long to a motor that doesn't run.

Re: Project Never Ends

I was thinking about this as well. That 4cyl motor in your shed would do the same thing. Plenty of pressure at idle when cold, but once warmed it dropped WAY down, and would make bad noises.

Speaking of which, when should I plan to come over and help you move that thing to the "scrap heap"?

Just sent you an email on that very subject.

Really thinking of doing the vortec just for fun. My nut size will grow 3 times larger knowing I have nothing to loose if it blows up. Would put a lot of fun in it.

hmmmmmm

If I fix my motor, put good rods/crank it might make more power but I will not want to hurt anything. Decisions.

Jeremy has committed to the first $25 worth of the vortec motor price.

Dobrick is in for $10.

hmmmm, if I can get enough donations to pay for the motor I will run it until it blows up just for the syty group to see.

Been debating since sat do I do on the cheap don't care if it blows, or fix current motor with good parts and be worried?

hmmm

Re: Project Never Ends

If you're going to run it until it breaks I'll add another $5 to my donation, and help with the labor to get it in there.

I want to see you pull a Will Stevenson though, and wire the wastegates shut!

Re: Project Never Ends

Did corner weights tonight. Truck launched very well at track so wanted to see what we actually had for weights on corners.

Without me.
