Uhhh...what kind of welcome did you expect? You came to a syclone-typhoon bulletin board, dug up an old lightning referenced post, then say "don't underestimate the power of lightnings".....sounded to me like you were looking for a debate from the start....And I seriously doubt that "most" lightnings are in the twelves....Didn't they produce over 40,000 per year?

They produced an average of 5000 gen 2's per year for 6 years, mine is #1485 of 4966 for 2000

I just said don't underestimate the Lightnings, if you find one that will race there is a 90% chance it is modded. I NEVER insulted your syty's. Show me where I insulted any of your rides or started anything. I really can't believe you took offense to anything I wrote, but oh well I guess some people just want to read things into statements that aren't there....

Why can't both of us just enjoy our limited production, high horsepower trucks?

yeah, the lightnings are pretty cool. a few of my buddies drive them, but you can't just slap a pulley on it unless you're willing to do some engine mods, forged pistons, rods, etc. one of my friends just did the 4# and blew it up after 2200 miles. Another one threw the 8 or maybe even 10 on his and blew it up later that day after 76 miles. it hauled ass, probably a high 11/low 12, but it blew. plus theyre all over the place. i love my ty.

there are a ton of people in the 10's including me, trust me, the Lightnings take very well to the mods.

You're running 10's with 500 wheel HP in a 4400+ lb truck? You must have some really good 60' times. What is your 60' and 1/8 mile time, and 1/4 mph? I haven't been over to NLOC in a few weeks, but I thought there were only around 10(??) running in the 10's. Unfortunately, I've never seen one run below 8.5 in the 1/8 mile. Tuners can still turn a good buck off their knowledge, so there isn't a lot of shared information out there. A lot of them are still under warranty so the owners don't want to mess with them.

Lightnings are a blast to drive, though, not to mention they fit me a lot better than the Sy. I've owned two of them, a black 99 and currently have an 03 Sonic Blue. They have the same problem as any quick rear wheel drive vehicle... you can't run it the same on the street as the track (especially with DR's or slicks on). A stock L blows the tires off just about anywhere under 20 mph.

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

I ran 10.94@122.4mph on slicks pig rich at 10.9:1 with a 1.8 60ft on a cool night. I have more than 509 rwhp now, I just haven't been on a dyno since I upped the boost from 14.5# to 17#, but I have a wide band commander that uses it's own 02 sensor and I am still fine with no knock. I need to get back to the dyno to put the finishing touches on the tune now that the motor has 1,500 miles on it.

Right now NLOC has 27 people listed as 10's or better and I know of at least 3 people who aren't on the list. It takes a lot to get into the 10's and is pretty much impossible with out slicks. I have a Kenne Bell supercharger, forged block, fox lake heads, comp cams, 2400 stall, 60# injectors, SCT MAF, traction bars, ect, and much much more.... I have spent a lot of money. On the street, I have no doubt a modded Ty would beat me traffic light to traffic light... I just shread street tires. We also need a well prepped track much more than you guys do.

A buddy of mine is building a twin turbo 5.4 DOHC Lightning right now using twin T61's... That thing will be a monster. Right now the thing that is starting to catch on is the Turbo Lightnings. If I had it to do all over again, that is what I would have done, but hey we all do mods and learn from them.

If your buddy blew his motor with a 4# lower his tuner is terrible... I ran a Kenne Bell and a 5# lower putting 460 to the wheels for a year with no blown motor and when I tore it down to build a new motor, my motor was in great shape. But, you are right, Lightning owners are very very helpful with each other, but the major tuners are very secretive mostly due to most of them starting together and breaking apart due to personal differences.

I truely love spooling up my dad's TY before a launch, what a rush...

I too love everything about the Lightnings and the ty's... What a nice garage that will make for me eventually...

When I do buy a Ty, I really want one that already has a built motor and will run high 11's or low 12's... How much can I expect to pay?

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

as far as im aware, my buddy with the 4# only had a programmer, intake, exhaust, and just slapped the pulley on it. no tuner that im aware of, other than the programmer, which doesnt allow much.

Ah, a victim of the pulley tune in the predator... The old 4# pulley tunes that are generically programmed into the predator by diablo were notorious for blowing up motors... Our motors will generally hold up to 475 rwhp reliably if your tuner knows what he is doing... Those generic pulley tunes are like grenandes though

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

I ran a good running Lightning from the tree once in a friendly “grudge” match. At the time my truck was still on the stock chip and I wasn’t launching as hard as I do now. He beat me by a half a length by way of a hole shot. Otherwise I would’ve had ‘em. He knew what a Sy was (he’d always wanted one) and was still impressed.

sweet, i think thats what he had... i guess ill have to have him try it again with a different method of tuning it. haha. you know of any good place to find a tuner for those trucks?

Where is he located... There are some really good tuners around the country and if you aren't near a good dyno tuner, there are two REALLY good mail order tuners that can tweak and e-mail the updates to him... First thing he needs to do is make sure he got the updated Predator files from diablo...

My $0.02 from a non-owner based viewpoint.

The lightening takes well to mods, as does the Sy/Ty......The Lightening is at least 9 years NEWER, and as such is a bit more reliable, and has a crapload of more technology in it than the Sy/Ty machine.

I've been around BOTH that were stock, and highly modded. Both are good in thier own respects, but your numbers are WAY off....90% of 30,000 vehicles is 27.000 modified trucks running around......I'll put money on that figure being off.....I'd say if 20% are modded you'de be closer, but thats still a bit high.......

At any rate, I'd take a Sy over a lightening anyday. AWD launches, and smaller size > *

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

no, you didn't understand... If a Lightning wants to race, there is a 90% chance that they are modded, not that 90% of lightnings are modded. Also, I doubt there are 30,000 Lightnings on road... Wet roads have claimed quite a few with the torque :(

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

I love the Lightning just about as much as my TY there are about 4or 5 here in town. However i thought they were a mid to low 14 stock.I havent seen anything at the track to prove any different.

Almost every stock Lightning I have seen at the track run in the 13.6's and 13.7's... The best I saw was that 13.4 and the worst was 14.1 on a 100 degree day with no track prepping...

OK...we get it, Lightnings rule  ... Why not go preach to other Lightning guys who will agree with you on how awesome they are.

Re: The looks you get from Lighting owners.

why would you take that attitude... I was just sharing my knowledge, I never said Lightnings rule or syty's don't... a little touchy aren't you... Can't we just appreciate each other's vehicles. On the street, I would take a Syty over my lightning in a race almost everytime. Like I said, my dad's TY is awesome and I would take a Turbo over a supercharger anyday of the week.
