Re: Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

Well, it has been over 2 years since the 4.3 lifted the head gaskets (for the last time) and i parked it and started this swap. Well on 3/6/09 I fired the new engine! This was particularly rewarding since this was the first engine that i put together completely unsupervised from picking the bare block up at the machine shop to turning the key. Thanks to my Dad for welding up my radiator, a "slightly" modified griffin, my upper charge pipe and upper radiator hose connector. Im still learing on the TIG so he was a huge help with those parts. Otherwise, its all me and im damn proud of it!

A quick rundown of this build

6.0 LQ9 block .030 over
stock crank
eagle rods
weisco pistons
comp cam (trying to find my cam card) lifters, springs etc
317 casting heads, "cleaned up" with oversize intake valves
ls1 intake
my own "custom" made exhaust manifold system
new FAST XFI/XIM management system

left overs from the 4.3 include
4l80e trans with 3500 Hughes converter with lockup
3 inch downpipe and exhaust
Turbonetics T76 Q trim ball bearing turbo

Now enough talk, what everyone wants to see is pics. The entire album can be seen at http://s105.photobucket.com/albums/m240/500charger/Syclone%20V8%20Swap/

Re: Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

trade you a weiand / lingenfelter for that?
My truck needs it too much! That crappy z28 ls1 intake and little throttlebody have to go! Im going to try and make 4" charge pipes fit but I may have to go with 3.5" due to hood clearance up front.

I can't get the power its making now to the ground, so logically the next step is to make more power.

My friend is a distributer for Edelbrock.

If you want that intake & other latest stuff from Edelbrock.

Especially LS type cyl heads, CNC ported heads.

Ask for Rich or Dave
Ill have to do that when im ready for some heads. There was a test in one of the last Hot Rod magazines where they tested 11 different sets of heads against stock ls1 heads and they all made close to 100 more hp on a N/A 408.

I knew when i put this motor together that i had 150-200 more hp available in a better set of heads and intake/tb. I cant wait to get this on there, but i have to since 1) we just picked up a ty last night and 2) my CTS-V dropped a valve Friday coming home from work and is hurt pretty bad :(

So i guess the TY you went to look at was good enough to buy? You were telling me about it at hooters. Post some pictures. :D

Nice, what changes in tune and hp/tq are you expecting?

Great build. "I can't get the power its making now to the ground, so logically the next step is to make more power. " - made me lol

How is the hood clearance with the new intake?

Some extra fuel will be needed for all this extra air. According to Edelbrock this intake is worth 30-40 hp over an ls6 manifold on a naturally aspirated motor. An ls6 manifold would probably be worth 30 hp over the ls1 manifold I had. I figure once its tuned this manifold should be woth close to 75hp over my old ls1 manifold/truck throttle body.

Ha yea forget traction :) The throttle body is close to the hood, but clears comfortably. I dont think this would clear a stock hood. It is also really really close to the lower mount for the wiper motor, I am going to clearance it a little before I bolt everything down.

This manifold is supposed to be one of the best performing aftermarket LS manifolds on the market, but they dont sell many since it wont fit under the hood of 90% of the factory LS cars.

Hopefully I will be firing it up over the weekend...

Re: Sy 354 LQ9 Turbo still AWD is running

Well here is a crappy cell pic of the intake all done. Been so much rain here recently though I havent had it out of the garage till last weekend.

I drove it down to a local shop for a little dyno day hang out Saturday and for fun (and kind of last minute) I pulled the front drive shaft and we strapped it down. It was 3 pulls for $50, I ended up doing 4 pulls but only 2 were good ones.

Without my laptop I couldnt get the transmission to stay in 3rd or even 2nd gear, so the first and fourth pull were in 4th gear converter unlocked. The second and third pull it shifted and messed up the dyno graph.

I havent made any changes to the computer since swapping intake manifolds. I hope to get some of the drop-off out of it, but it may also be running out of turbo. I borrowed a laptop, used my phone as a modem, and downloaded the FAST software and at least had a data log to make sure it wasnt blowing itself up.

Anyway, first run was the 541, and the fourth run was 574 after pulling the air filter off. It was a lot of fun though to have it on a dyno (never had this truck on one before) and I did leave making the most power of the day. It gives me an idea of where it is, but I plan on going back soon after some tuning and get the trans to say in 3rd gear instead of overdrive :(

A couple video cameras were rolling, including one that was on a suction cup on the back corner facing the rear tire on the passenger side that should look and sound pretty cool. Hopefully they get those uploaded soon!
