DesertSy: It's Just a Driver

Re: DesertSy: It's Just a Driver

Moving right along now.

I had my work table set up, and decided to tackle the headliner. Lloyd priced out a new panel through his sources and although reasonably priced, by the time I factored in gas ,tax, and some other costs, I decided to try it myself. But thatnks for the effort, Lloyd.

Here's the panel after I completed it. It needed some repairs. I think it had been out before as the board was cracked. I'm fairly pleased with the results:

Here's the sequence number again:

Installed:

I got a lot of the other interior panels cleaned and installed. As well as a new (take-out) carpet set.

I also got the center console cleaned and ready to install. I have a local peep checking for a couple of other needed parts in his stash, hopefully he'll find what I need, and with some luck, I can get the interior buttoned up tomorrow.

This truck is VERY close to being completed now. After the interior it's just a couple of minor mechanical details, tags and insurance, front alignment, and rub and wax the paint. And I'll begin driving it regularly. Possibly this week. We'll see.

I don't think anyone is following this any longer, or cares, but I'll keep updating it because it gives me incentive to keep making progress.

After a few days of not being able to work (Chat Regulars know the story of the 'stones), I've pretty much finished up the interior today. Came out nice. At least everything is clean, and dust-free. Some of the grime, particularly in the console was nasty.

The cup holders were really crummy. I guess the guy let a can rattle around in here since new. The ridge around the perimeter from the can can be seen and felt.

I took some of my scrap headliner material and using a 2-1/4" hole saw as a pattern traced a couple of circles, cut it out, and viola' looks much better. And the can and the parking meter change I keep in the forward one won't rattle.

I'm following, Dave. I keep my build thread up just so I can go back and look to see how far I have come. Keep up the good work.

Thanks you guys. I'll keep updating it, then.

Here's a little comparison I just thought of doing. This is for Steve (Baythan):

I have been following all along Dave. Plan on tackling my headliner as well. Can you share what glue you used?

Looks real good Dave. I've been watching all your updates also, guess I just haven't been replying. One thing I noticed is that it seems like the factory only painted the edges of your floor of where on mine they painted almost all of it.
Also one thing I noticed that was strange is where the seat belt buckle is one strap is red and the other is blue under the plastic trip. Is yours that way also?

I'm pretty sure it's just over-spray in the middle. There will be some paint inside the jambs, but I highly doubt they actually "paint" the floor. Just over-spray coming in the windows. They DO paint the jack stowage bracket.

Also one thing I noticed that was strange is where the seat belt buckle is one strap is red and the other is blue under the plastic trip. Is yours that way also?
Mine are both red. We've seen several colors on the inner buckles under the plastic on C4 Corvette's we've Judged. At first the Interior Judges were taking deductions, because they couldn't believe that there'd be red webbing in a blue car. But there is in my car, and I know it's never been out of the car since new. So now we just chuckle. Blue in a black car, red in a blue car, and black in a red car. Go figure.....

Thanks for the interest.

Dave, it looks like you may have the same "interior door handle return spring" problem that I have. I am sure you have a fix, and I would be interested to know what the fix is.

The fix is to find springs on rear-door handles of 4-doors in pick-a-part. Problem is those are usually gone too unless you're standing there when they set the car down.

I'm sure there's other car-lines that use the same spring that could be scavenged. We should keep this in mind, next time we're junk-yarding. See if we can identify an alternative to get the springs from.

EDIT: The Left and Right springs ARE different. So you need a left rear for a left SyTy door.

x2. I've got the loosey-goosey handle too. :( If someone has a photo of a "healthy" stock spring, maybe we can source it elsewhere.

Just so happens, that I may have some free time tomorrow. I will go to the local pick and pull, as they have lots of 4 door blazers of our body style. Do I just hack the door panel off and pluck the spring, or are there other things I need to grab?

The spring is part of the handle assembly. You can peel the door panel off, and bust the handle assy out too, if you can. It might be easier to unscrew it and take it out normally.

To change the spring, remove the handle assembly, push the pin out of the handle, exchange the broken with the new spring, and push the pin back in. I've successfully done a couple of these. Secret is to not push the pin all the way out. Just enough to get the handle and spring off. Makes it easier to line all the chit back up and push the pin back in. You have to also be creative to support the plastic housing so you don't bust it driving the pin out / in.

Dave, Your headliner and interior turned out really nice. How much do you have left before you can drive it ?
