Re: sy/ty

I am going to give my 2 cents on these trucks. Were they quick in the day: yes. Are the quick by today’s standards: no. Anyone who thinks they can buy a $5000 vehicle and outrun their buddy's new 5.0 mustang is living in la la land. Can they be very quick: absolutely, but it will take money and time.

I have about 20K in my truck now, and it is a fun to drive mid 11 truck, with A/C. I take it for what it is worth, very fun on the street, but not as cool, as say a 1969 camaro. I have always wanted one of these because I remember it from time in the Army and during my college days right after the Gulf War, but I am under no delusion that they will ever be worth any big money.

We have, basically, an s-10 or blazer with a body kit, which is what 99% of people will think, but I still think they are badass.

I would rate SyTy vehicles (1-10, 10 = Worst) an 8 in 20 years . While mine hasn't been stolen,
burned, impounded, or confiscated (via unpaid liens at repair shops) which would make it a "10".
They often catch fire, have ABS brake failures, leak fluids, overboost, have vacuum/ignition issues
and were sold by GM Dealerships that were clueless/plain idiots (routinely canceling warrantees).

I would also say that SyTy owners are in denial as to maintenance, the lack of reliability,
standards, the cost of parts, and low resale values. Even the fit-n-finish "suck" directly from the factory
with no two trucks assembled the same (requiring tweaks even for a parts swap).

In 1993 a $30K Typhoon wasn't cheap either (forgetting that most insurance companies still think stolen SyTy's are S10's).
Side Note: $1.00 in 1993 has the same buying power as $1.62 in 2013. With an Annual inflation of 2.44%
in 2013 Dollars the MSRP for a Typhoon would be about $48,600 + dealer mark-up $2K = $50.6K.

So one could ask themselves "is it better to buy something (new or used) today", or modify
a SyTy with ($50.6K - $15K for vehicle = $35.6K) pocket change (ignoring depreciation).
Some think an older $35.6K (60ish) muscle car is "cooler" with its badly designed suspension, low MPG
high octane fuel systems, primitive handling, braking, and electrical issues and goofy flywheel factory hp/torque figues.

Others prefer a newer $35.6K truck or car (TBSS, mustangs, cameros, SRTs) with factory warranty restrictions, complex computer
limitations, few real customization, high insurance rates, and heavy curb weight for daily street/strip ownership.

I personally love the uniqueness of having both old and new (an LS7 AWD Ty) since it still maintains the body-style
of its era (in 1993 terminology) but has the advantages of an LS Swap (mpg, hp, torque, parts, maintenace,
technology). So for me, its about being completely "different" from the factory brands seen in every
Walmart parking lot, and stealthy enough to embarrass $80K+ vehicles whenever I choose to go fast!

But I doubt anyone really cares what I like (though I do get a lot of thumbs-up/stares).

later ya'll...

Re: sy/ty

I've only had my truck a year, but already love it like family. The reason for buying my Ty was - cheap performance. You actually get alot with these trucks: Leather, pw, pd, ps, power seats, automatic (wife's criteria), ABS (yeah not so great but its still there), AWD, turbo charged, the list is long. I didn't have a ton of cash to spend but I still wanted good looks, decent performance, and something that was car show worthy (sorry, a 2013 v6 camaro at a show/meet doesn't count, in my opinion). The Ty simply fit all my criteria, plus a back seat for my soon to be born son...can't wait. Frankly, I couldn't find anything else that had AWD, a turbo, and leather seats with cup holders  that wasn't over 10K in as good condition. These trucks have super potential and practicality for everyday use if you want, what's not to love.

If you've modded your truck a little and are running in the 12's, that's still faster than the average new "sporty" car. Are you going to take down a new ZR1, of course not, but you didn't spend $115,000 dollars either.

To me, this truck certainly beats having a 600 a month+ payment, for how much more in that SRT? Not much that I see. I guess better gas mileage and GPS...ehh who cares, I'll keep my truck thanks. :2cents:

Code what?
I've owned my first going on 14yrs in August. I've enjoyed it even though its sitting on jack stands at the moment. waiting for more money to be put into it to be finished.

I bought my Teal Typhoon 10yrs ago in August. I have been committed to keeping it drivable and reliable, not going overboard like the Syclone.

I love these trucks and couldn't amagine owning anything else. I'm not a car guy, I'm a truck guy. New LS based full size GMC's are nice, I don't need one nor do I want the payment. Plus my gf has one I get to drive whenever.

I have two typhoons and a syclone, all of them have 1 extra engine and transmission ready to be built for the future. Nothing like having something you love that only a handful of people have. The rarity takes the cake for me.

Bottom line is the SyTy's will outlive all of us, life is to short to overlook other adventures in life. 2 years ago I found another hobby that I will also pursue long into life. Only if my SyTy hobby was as inexpensive as my new hobby.

BTW, cup holders are worthless for holding drinks. My cup holders hold my iPhone, and that's about it. Unless you drive like grandma

I agree, that's why I lol'ed after that comment. Good for phone and change or customize it for a guage.

I bought my Ty because I have wanted one forever. I have given up on people knowing what they are. I bought mine as a Welcome Home from Afghanistan present to myself. What can I say? I am a masochistic mechanic who hates his money. Lolz

Re: sy/ty

For anyone who wants to buy a cheap vehicle and be quick, these are a great choice. Much better than a Civic! Just like any vehicle, you can throw money at it and make it fast.

I think we all know what we have and what we can beat in these things. 14.1 is quick and fun to drive, but modern muscle will spank a stock SyTy every time.

I will love my new Ty for what it is. A unique vehicle that will bring a smile to my face all winter long!

Re: sy/ty

I do love my trucks, but after recently buying a 90 ZR-1,I find it refreshing to get in something that very fast, comforable, and handles like a roller skate. But for the sheer thrill of all you cant beat a heavily moded syclone in boosted launch.

Re: sy/ty

Bump to the top for the new guys.

i think the whole thing comes down to s10's in general, i have always been a breadbox square body fan, and i would rather be in a badass s10/s15 style truck rather a camaro or any other badass hot rod. thats just my own personal preference. if i seen 2 of them side by side on a street i would def pay more attention to the s10, thats just me. i have that much passion for them as would someone would for their camaro/mustang/firebird etc.

but since you brought the thread back, to be honest i am lazy these days i stop giving people the long run down of what the truck is when they even ask. i only answer their questions and tell them to just google "GMC Typhoon" or "GMC Syclone"

occasionally i get a thumbs up from people just driving, that excites me the most because we can just look at each other while driving and just know we both know what it is.

on the other hand i get other looks from people especially the younger crowd of course that think im driving some outdated s10 with appearance mods, but that's ok it doesn't bother me anymore. because i know what im driving and that's all that matters,

what it comes down to for me, i love sy/ty's for their rarity as mentioned most, i know where my truck is in the PAS list, i know its a real typhoon and it was my dream vehicle the year i graduated H.S. and to be honest if i had an s10 with every single part from a typhoon on it and i mean everything i wouldn't be satisfied knowing my vin# still saying its not a PAS truck, but of course i still admire someone with a tyclone of sort.

every time i get into it turn the key and press the gas peddle i smile.
one thing is for sure, i don't take it for granted owning this truck, i worked very hard to get it.
i think owning a sy/ty is a privilege TBH

my 9 year old tells me all the time " i hope this will be my first car" of course it wont be but for him to say that makes me grin, he is programmed, the teen girls on our block ask him why i love that ugly truck, he knows the history i heard him say " that's a typhoon its a very rare collectors truck" lol it just shows he pays attention to me, and that the 5 years owning one has rubbed off on him.

ok im rambling but was cool taking all this into perspective with my feelings for the whole sy/ty ownership.

Hahaha...this is a great thread. Hard to work on....constantly battling new issues.....driving around with laptops on your passenger seat...but when these first came out, it was the coolest thing I had ever seen and still is. Stop light to stop light, almost nothing can beat it...nothing like pulling away from almost everything off the light. I drove mine 100+ miles today around Chicago and Indiana.....had a great time and tossed a bunch of junk off in the bed.

Re: sy/ty

I wanted a Sy when they first came out, could not afford one though.

After I have watched Guy Levy cleaning house @ several local street races, smoking 5.0's B&D racing Mustangs here in Cali, it was a great sight to see.
That made me want them even more.

At the time the typical 5.0 Fox body Mustangs had no problems hooking up on the street & getting some daylight on the front tires, (wheels up) it was just a great time seeing a GM vehicle killing those Mustangs, that most of the time dominating the street racing scenes.

For me I was just tired of B&D racing there Mustangs here & winning for the most part.
