*SY #1* How much is it worth?

Re: *SY #1* How much is it worth?

In addition to what Dig has said, SyTy's are not a place where people are commonly restoring them.
If restorations become more common, restored or the ability to Syclone #0001 will have some added value.

In my observation, the quality of SyTy's for sale has definitely dropped since I bought my truck in 01. I have child on the way this winter and have though I may want a Typhoon at some point and time, if I want to carry around the family. Given the condition of most of the trucks that I see now-a-days, the thought has crossed my mind that I may end up restoring Typhoon to get exactly the truck I want in the condition I want.

IMHO 15 years or so the $$$$ sys will be

sy #1 and 2
sy 2998

the marlboros that are factory

low mile saudi trucks

and then the rest

100% stock unmolested un restored low mile truck will bring a premium

sy #0001 will be a big dollar truck down the road

But it isnt now which is the big question with the price and if it should carry such an inflated price tag over the other production trucks.

The collector value of these trucks is when they have low miles and are mint pristine with documentation, otherwise they just dont fetch a huge pricetag and everyone here knows this. #0001 is neither low milege or a pristine example at this very moment. It would be a much different story if that was the case.

#0001 is a novelty truck the way I see it because of the cool factor of it truely being #1.... which to me, means you could get away with asking a bit more over average selling price of the trucks.

Its a 6-7k truck all day long based on what they sell for in its condition and mileage. Given its #0001, I dont think 8k would be unfair to ask...maybe push 9k if it was detailed a bit nicer.

Fully restored, I can then see asking 13k+. But again, as it currently sits, its another Syclone that needs light resto and TLC.

I'm a bit surprised there haven't been more. (Maybe there have, and they don't care a lot about the internet).
In the GN world, there are *lots* of restores, and there are a lot more of them.

these trucks aren't that easy to restore..

considering each one has a random number on the firewall, they have a shitload of specific parts, and most of them appear to have been beaten on..

not to mention it doesn't look like GM made a whole lot of extra parts for each model year.

its basically a s10 so parts are out there and with the way people are parting them the uncommon items are there 20 years from now we will see posts like " what valve stems are correct?
"

Everything mechanical is original.

from the first post. But I agree, if I was looking at buying the truck. I would have a lift, mirror and flashlight handy  because you never know. I know of cars where the motor was swapped before it was even sold

It is hard to go out into the future and say what will and won't bring $$$, however I think you are fairly accurate with your forecast, IF they remained original. I would include the following as well:

First and last Typhoon
All documented prototype trucks (SyTy and Sgt)
Syclone with VIN 1991
Typhoons with VIN 1992 and 1993
PPG Syclone

It all depends on the one shelling out the cash though. I would prefer 0001 over 0002 if I had to choose but that is just me.

I.

the PPG i dont think it will ever" really" be on the market again,

the rest I will agree with as far as the 91,92 vins Id add a 10% "just darn cool premium"

x2. Like I said, the story behind them (if it's document-able) will add that much value.

SyTy production is full of good stories.

Re: *SY #1* How much is it worth?

Sorry about getting off-tangent, but not everyone here cares about going fast. All that takes is money. A car is only "Original" once. It can be restored or modified numerous times. But it will never be "origional" again.

Thats fine (the off topic) Dig seems to be the "original guy, I know hes researched the frame coating etc someday somebody will care enough to "restore" one but I think there are too many "I bought it as a investment" poeple who just put them away, and they have minimal miles, theres been a few posts on here of trucks still on MSO floating around

I think the owners of origional SyTys should be encouraged to keep them that way, so as not to loose the historical and educational value of the few remaining 'origional' SyTy's in the hobby.

I can agree with this statement for the most part. My concern/problem with it is that not many people can keep them all original by no fault of there own. My truck was already molested/destroyed by the original owner and further by the next perspective buyer who I got it from. I couldn't go back to stock if I wanted to. I appreciate an all original SyTySoGT more then a heavily modded one, but yet still appreciate them all for what they are. There are IMO more modded trucks then "original" ones and this reason alone is why a truly "original" truck should and hopefully will command a higher price them the others.

I tend to agree with you, Dave, but the reality is that the low entry cost to buy them means the remaining pure stockers are likely going to get bought and hacked up. This will leave only the "plastic queens", and a few odd barn finds.

This group doesn't fit the demographic of the restorer, or 'original keeper'. That, as you noted, takes a lot of effort, time, and $. The vast majority of people here, active and inactive, don't fit that mold.

I struggle with this concept all the time. My compulsive nature makes me want to paint and/or correctly restore every nut, bolt, and tag on #689. But at the same time, a truck like that would forever sit in my garage, which would be as dull as plain white toast. What good is a vehicle you can never use?

Driving the GN to Car Craft (only a 250 mile trip, but a trip nonetheless) really illustrated that for me.
It's *fun* to actually drive them. It's fun to have a fast car that you're not worried about every second.
We've talked about getting it repainted, but then it would be back to the obsession of maintaining black paint.

One thing, for sure- we really need to start documenting what stock things looked like, from tags to chalk marks to valve stems (I've got an original set, FWIW) and all the little parts/bolts/etc. that people chuck.

Re: *SY #1* How much is it worth?

The people that can keep the commitment to never drive it, and keep shit from falling on it while in storage (my problem with my Corvette), and take care to keep the garage from burning down on it etc, are far and few between.

Funny. The garage partially fell in on #689.... so the hood is no longer "original".

Re: *SY #1* How much is it worth?

I agree with everything that has been stated, however a lot of it is speculation (not that it isnt justified) but that does not touch on what the truck is worth right now.

I think Adam and I believe Ken (whoever mentioned the % increase based on the #) are right. Sure, the truck is probably worth a little more than a regular Syclone based on novelty.

Facts of this truck are
1). its high mileage
2). does not appear to have been well cared for
3). historical significance has yet to be proven
4). the restoration alone will remove some of the originality of the truck depending on the extent things need to be replaced or repaired
5). The cost of the restoration will ultimately determine the trucks value, because even 15 years from now its still not going to be a top dollar truck if its still a pile like it is now.

those are the plain and simple facts. If there was no novelty attached to it Id say its a $6K truck based on the current market. I dont think 0001 is worth $3K, but I guess $9K for the truck isnt totally unreasonable.

Re: *SY #1* How much is it worth?

I doubt it.

Very few SyTy enthusiasts have concern for originality. There will never be enough interest in these to generate the effort to learn what the 'correct valve stem' is. There is no preservation effort whatsoever within the SyTy group or on .net.

We have a new Special Group on .net for "SyTy Big Guns". Ie the people that modify the crap out of their cars to run 10.99 or faster get special recognition every time a post of theirs is read.

What about recognizing the hand-full of peeps that have bone-stock, unmolested SyTy's and have taken much effort to preserve them in that condition??? This is just as difficult a feat as running 10's (although less expensive). Ask anyone that has intentionally tried to keep an origional car "origional" how damn difficult it really is. Those that have never done it, have no idea how hard it is. I have, and have the award that recognizes that achievement from the foremost international organization regarding that model of car hanging on my wall. That's why I'm passionate about this preservation thing. I've done it. It's HARD.

Sorry about getting off-tangent, but not everyone here cares about going fast. If you have money, time, and contacts, you too can go just as fast. A car is only "Original" once. It can be restored or modified numerous times. But it will never be "origional" again.

I think the owners of origional SyTys should be encouraged to keep them that way, so as not to loose the historical and educational value of the few remaining 'origional' SyTy's in the hobby.

I agree with you and i have always been one of those guys that returns a car to show room condition.. i was taught at an early age by my dad that the original parts are where it is at, not going super fast by throwing parts at it.

as for my typhoon, it has 100k+ miles so i made it what i wanted it to be.. if i ever sell my syclone and typhoon it will be for a low mile all original black/black 92 with no roof rack in perfect shape. If i ever find such a truck i will enjoy it but rarely drive it, hell i rarely drive mine now (I have put 6k miles on it in 8 years of owning it)

at some point if these trucks are worth anything, the all original low milage ones will be worth the most, even though their suspension is shitty

yeah it is, the problem is, very few people are willing to share them.

any that are shared are all hear say or rumors..
