CANCELLED - 2016 SyTy Nationals

Re: CANCELLED - 2016 SyTy Nationals

In my opinion (though I rarely come here anymore)...

Its unfortunate that a National Syclone-Typhoon-SoGT Event can't happen due to insufficient attendance.
I wonder (aloud) if having the following might have increased signup:
-The fastest Trucks (V6's, LS's, whatever) in attendance to promote a gathered shootout?
-A major sponsor (such as Speed Inc who performs engine swaps) as a promoter/open-house participant
-A facility (with multiple proving grounds) to encourage competition between GM vs Ford vs MoPAR Performance Trucks 1-on-1 for excitement
-A Club Clash between GM Trucks (Trailblazer SS, 454 SS, Syclone/Typhoon, Silverado, etc) for enthusiasm and friendly rivalry/competition

I personally believe its a series of things which make an large exclusive Syclone-Typhoon event improbable going forward;
-Age (owner/truck), Reliability, Parts, Expertise, Cost, Event Competition and Bang-for-the-Buck (when compared to other offerenings)
-Value (and fun factor gained) when compared to local events and family expectations
-Decreased compatibility and familiarity between members, trucks and taste/goals
-Wow factor (to whats available currently from new dealerships, speciality manufacturers, custom shops, etc)
-Competitive National Events Available (consuming vacation and interest) like Woodward, Hot Aug Nites, Hot Rod Events, Car Craft Events etc
-And Locating a neutral popular site for central comuting (that doesnt become stale and subject to weather issues)

If I were to use Colorado as a example of offerings, it seems like an uphill battle for the SyTycommunity due to
-Organized Sanctioned Street Racing (like at PPIR) offering variety, recognition, and challenge
-1,000 to 1,500 attendees at monthly "city" cruises (like Golden) for meeting, bench racing, and comparison shopping
-Bandimere sponsored monthly events (like Chevy Show, Truck Fest, Club Clash, Test-n-Tune, Mile Hi Nationals) for racing
-Tri-State Car Shows (GoodGuys, Pueblo, Denver Auto Show, etc) for showing
-Pikes Peak, Airport Mile Events and Sponsored Autocrossing for road racing
-And Major Open Houses at Car and Machine Shops (such as Gibtec/V. Gaines) for viewing/participation

In hindsight it may take some re-tooling (like Sportmachines at Carlisle) to attract the SyTy Community going forward.
Or lesser expectations ......(unfortunately). But its nice to see folks trying rather than just wishing (to get together).

To answer some of these questions:

- The goal is typically to get the fastest trucks to come. I know there was talk about even giving owners incentives such as gas cards and paid hotel rooms to get them to show up. Larry, you're a perfect example with a built truck. What would it take for you to haul across the country to attend an event?

- Sponsors are great. Getting them to commit is not as easy as just asking them to come and sponsor an event. They want logistics and data to make sure it is worth their time and money they are going to spend. Speed Inc would be a great sponsor for a future event. I'll tag on to say its also hard to get sponsors when we barely have vendors who support us currently. I can name on 2 fingers current vendors who I can buy parts from not including the smaller garage guys....and 1 of those 2 hasn't directly supported SyTys for years.

- We had a facility...in fact, we were lining up 2 facilities.... the track and a separate place that we could hold a real autoX course.

- The plan was to open up the track days to have competition outside of just SyTy vs SyTy.

- Age, I could argue with. I'll just lay out an example. The GN guys aren't a young aged group, yet they pull numbers....and dont give me that there's more of them made. Yes, there is. However, given that there were 8,000 SyTys made and we can't even get 50 trucks to show up in one spot....com'n. You guys really saying your to old and lazy to enjoy your trucks now?

- Wow factor. I think 100+ trucks in a parking lot is pretty damn cool with everyone sharing stories, ideas, etc. Guess it takes more nowadays to motivate?

- BG is a neutral site. Plenty to do around the town. That's why we aren't the only group to hold "Nationals" there. Weather? You can't control it, you deal with it and make alternate plans.

- Carlisle - It's an already occurring event. The difference is that Tom took the time to hash out a spot for SyTys and have them recognized in a sea of other vehicles....hence SyTys AT Carlisle. Tom does a great job at his part of the organization of it too...... but lets be realistic...Tom is organizing the SyTy portion only, not the whole entire Carlisle event. MAJOR difference there between being a part of an existing event and organizing an ENTIRE event.

Maybe that is the solution right there. Piggy back on another existing event from now on. It's apparent we can't support ourselves, so coordinating with another group or event might be the answer for future events......but if that happens, it's not a SyTy Nationals.... it's SyTy @ Woodward, SyTy @ HAN, SyTy @ GoodGuys......

For those who DONT do the FB group, I will tell you straight up, you aren't missing a damn thing.... in fact, the only thing you are missing is the utter stupidity of post topics that come up daily and then when something does actually get posted that could be useful, you have people who have no clue or up to date information posting bullshit answers and inaccurate answers all over or you have people who want to argue with you. It's more of a playground than anything else IMHO.

The f*cking memes......i swear if there was a function to have those shut off, it would have been done long ago.

For awhile, I wasn't paying much attention here to the forum and more on the FB group....I now find Id rather be back here on the forum and limiting myself to what I post in the FB group.

Truth hurts. But Im not the only person with the same outlook.

Agreed. Good thing it is getting summer time so we can focus on mowing our grass. (inside joke)

The FB group is BS really. I hate the memes. The idiots. If you want info, come here. Want people selling crap or posting the same unfunny pic over and over and over, FB is your thing.

What I miss most is people doing build threads. I love seeing people making progress on here or trying new stuff out or figuring out an issue.

Ummm....converted vans!! Rebel flags! Um...monster trucks! Pulled pork!!

And of course...SyTyers by the dozens!

And not to open a can of worms...but I think we should be present at the GM Nationals at Carlisle too! Maybe a different crowd to appeal to? (other than pure "truck" people)

I have looked on the SyTy FB deal. Kind of got discouraged and for sure didn't want to join.
Maybe down the road the SYTY nationals can be part of the Buick nationals. Should be more of an all GM factory turbo vehicles meet with sections.

Hell yes. Sunbirds.Trans Ams.Corvairs,Jetfires,Sprints,Cobalts,(Did they offer a Spectrum turbo? I know the I-Mark version did) I think Yenko made a prototype Vega turbo. Prolly some FWD turbo buick Unicorns in late 80's too.

i was just reading through this thread. Why should regional meets be meant to suffer due to the lack of participation in a national meet? You're stripping the local of their group efforts, to push the national event. So you want it to be "Nats or Nothing" from here on out?

Nope...one of the prevailing ideas is to alternate years. Doesn't mean we can't still meet regionally, but focusing on a national meet every year (or every few years) without the conflict of regional meets, might be a way to make a successful event.

I don't think that is the point at all, I think he's just saying that it should be taken into consideration when planning regional events, not to NOT have or NEVER have regional events.

my personal opinion after dealing with this shit show for over a year is that Nats is dead. Nobody wants to do anything UNLESS its in their own back yard. This community talks a great game (the "would you attend.." poll), but when it comes time to pony up and throw down, nobody can be found (as shown by registration). The diehards are in the minority and unfortunately the minority isn't enough for a national event.

Go read it again. I said nothing about not having or canceling regional events for the last time.

I said we all should work together (representatives from all the clubs/regions) and maybe focus efforts on putting together a national event, then schedule regional stuff around it in an effort to have good attendance.

Heres the thing though....not real much enthusiasm is flowing here anyhow about Nationals. Look at the views vs responses. Theres a handful upset. A few with some feedback. Where's everyone else who's a member on here with a truck? As posted, everyone seemed all hyped up when it was being kicked around to do one....then we start coordination and everyone that was interested wasn't.

Jimmy is probably correct. Nationals is dead. I certainly enjoyed the past ones I attended. Sorry for those who never experienced it and looking forward to it.

Re: CANCELLED - 2016 SyTy Nationals

I think the regional events drive the national event. People who have never been to either, wonder what you could do for a whole day or multi day car show. I certainly did the first time I attended NATS in Bowling Green.
I agree with most of what's been said. I have two young kids, and family is more important. I had enough notice to get it on the schedule, but not everyone can do that. I'm sad it didn't work out, but i understand completely. Maybe the regional chapters should work together to have multi regional gatherings. Less of a time commitment may be more successful.
