Project Never Ends

Re: Project Never Ends

You're gonna let a guy who has to rebuild his motor 3 times a year have a look at yours?

Well, he has 3 motors. Motor A, B, C.

The stall is like 6k, runs to almost 10k rpm. Won superstock in our division couple times, came in 3rd nationally not too long ago.

I think I only know of 1 he blew up, and it hydrolocked when water got in through the heads. Most of the rebuilds are freshen ups.

But now with all that said this time of year is his busy year, so I will be on my own for most of it.

Re: Project Never Ends

Cant wait for n/a #'s on the dyno. i always wanted to know the output differential of my motor.Maybe next time when i go v8.

If he gets time I will have him make a pull. But the goal really isn't for HP. Will be a carb on it, diff dist and just enough tune to not hurt anything. Looking for good oil flow, pressure more than anything.

Re: Project Never Ends

Slowly making progress. Working on the new pan, had to drop off some main studs at machine shop yesterday due to some changes.

Went to run the CNC last night and the encoder wheel was bad in 1 axis, had to order parts for that.
Went onto another non syty project I had to do, found the problem but again didn't get it fixed need to get parts for that. I gave up last night after 2 strike outs.

This weekend should be productive in catching up on my ty and a few parts for you guys.

Re: Project Never Ends

Had to make fun of all you guys that spend countless hours and money in a truck to throw it away. I could not do that. I am sure there is a dollar figure that would make me, but not willingly.

On a good news the shortblock is done, my new custom oil pan is now holding 2 different stacks of paper from flying away. Cut it in half, just didn't work after 20hrs of building it. Never done one before, learned a lot, most import have the block when you build it.

This weekend is 4 day weekend, hoping it might run or be close by end of it.

It does run now, still some things to do/sort out. Just cleaned garage from my weekend thrash of working on it and some parts for others.

Re: Project Never Ends

Detonation is likely, but it wouldn't hurt to look into oiling problems with the galling of the bearings.

Re: Project Never Ends

We think it's been sucking the pan dry.. and adding more volume of oil to the pan and not having a high volume oil pump should correct that. Yea.. detonation is a killer to anyone's bearings. Let's pray this time it's fixed!

Re: Project Never Ends

This thread is over 2 years old now... Good news is motor #3 appears to be doing ok. 200 miles on it so far, haven't really gotten into it too much. 2psi pulls like a syty does at 20+ though which is cool. The v6 syty sound is gone, is a much deeper burely sound. If it was my daily probably a bit too loud but as its my toy I don't care at this point. I do have more to do to exhaust just #1 on the priority list to do.

Fiberglass cowl hood is on now also, it cleared the engine without major cutting so thats a bonus.

Driving it to work tomorrow so we shall see how it goes. Not really worried though.

Re: Project Never Ends

No i didn't do the dyno thing. Maybe I should have, maybe not. Was $500 extra and my fear was its the height of race season and would set me back a month waiting for it to get done....could have been quick who knows.

I got to thinking if it works this time I am saving $500, if not I am in the same boat but a bit more labor but have $500 to fix things. LOL

New crank, 4 bolts splayed caps, ATI balancer, new timing chain, and new h beam forged rods this time. Hoping this does it. Next step is an aftermarket block and start over on machine work.

I thought that you put some dished pistons in for lower compression this time around too?

nope flat top with valve cutouts only. 9.6:1 compression and doing fine

Re: Project Never Ends

So the truck has 230 or so miles on it now, still running good. Funny story.

After work couple guys met me in parking lot as they heard all my stories but never seen the truck. I take one of them for a ride around industrial park. Keep in mind I am running 4psi or so, timing is -10 deg out of it, on the safe side of things.

So we go out of parking lot I give him a 2psi 50% throttle launch, come around in big circle get on it a bit up to 100 or so. Coming around back into park area I stopped and did a bit bigger launch, 4psi 75% throttle or so, 2 step turned down low. I look behind and see a blue corvette behind me. HMMM. Turn the corner and straight away in parking lot 400 yards are so. I get on it 75% or so throttle, 4psi boost for a few seconds and notice the corvette is keeping up with me.

I pull into parking lot to let the guy off and blue z06 corvette pulls in and around me. Guy in his 60's yells out the pass window to me "what the hell do you have in that thing?"

He mentioned he was catching me but I was pullling hard. I had to tell him that everything was turned down and motor only had 250 miles on it. He told me he had a tune done on his but 2nd gear he would loose traction. I then mentioned my AWD and his response was classic, "You will kill me off the line!"

I thought it was funny, cool guy cool z06 06-07 vintage.

Re: Project Never Ends

I told you guys many years ago this was project never ends.

Lots of upgrades going in as I am taking the truck to Big Bend Open road race, which I have posted in a few other threads.

So truck upgrades going in now are

  • Turbo blankets from PTP (so far they look good)
  • AC delete (mightymouse/renz style)
  • ISAC alky/boost controller
  • Roll bar (drilled 2 holes in floor last night, and just brought hom 115ft of tubing)
  • 5 pt seat belts (modified stock 93 seats so belts come through back, turned out good
  • ECM will finally find a home that isn't the floor board
  • New front rim to replace 1 that was slightly bent
  • Bell intercoolers to replace my ebay cores
  • Alky injection
  • Figure out why the TB sticks slightly off idle
  • Cooler on the intercooler tank for the road course.

I am sure there is more, I will try to get some pics of roll bar tomorrow as I know this topic is discussed often. Thanks to Gerber for letting me study his in depth at nats.

Re: Project Never Ends

Cage is tacked up, having never done a cage before I am learning as I go. Also learning what a ty takes to make it work, what fits best, etc. Bent 3 main hoops before I liked what I had.

To be legal the cage must tie directly into the frame, so I had to drill holes in spots that let me access those areas, which is also near the body mounts. So the rear bars go down right in front of gas tank to body mount, the rear bars go up then turn to go forward still allowing back seat to be used.

The main hoop is tucked near the ash trays, with bends to match the body line fairly close. There is a removable (not NHRA legal) rear bar that will swing so people could climb in rear seat with bar in place. I also have 2 extensions for door bars with swing outs clevis's. I have not done the door bars yet though.

Once I am happy with everything buy door bars I will drop the cage down to weld the tops, then lift it back up into place for the last time and start attaching to frame. Door bars will be last so that they swing and latch as they should.

You can also see the drivers seat which I modified to accept the 5 pt restraints. I think it came out very clean, when you remove them you can't tell the seat is anything but stock.
