Re: newb with questions

i know how old these trucks are. thats why im asking you guys as to what i should watch out for. im sure as he** not gonna spend $15,000 for a truck that needs $5,000+ in matinence. when i do look at a truck i need advice on what should raise red flags. as rare as these trucks are theres gotta be a reason as to why people are selling them . ive already passed up 3 sy's. 1 was in really god shape he was the 2nd owner with all the paperwork and the whole 9 yards. the owner said the fuel pump needed replaced and he couldnt start the truck but was more then willing to trade straight across for my Judge. he got to look at and drive my judge.i told him no deal until i get to drive his truck and to call me back when he gets the fuel pump replaced. this was about 3 years ago and im still waiting for his phone call. i wanted that truck bad. the other two obviously had the s**t beat out of them on a constant basis. no thanks i passed on both of them as well. if it were you guys looking to buy a sy/ty what would you watch out for? how shuld i go about checking these parts (front prop shaft, turbo play...) to see if theyre bad or not? i want one of these trucks because theyre rare, fast, and its somethign diffrent for me and im hoping i wont have to wrench and tune them as much as i do my Judge. i want to get in turn the key drive it/race it and not have to worry is the carb running too rich ? too lean ? hows the timing ? what abotu the a/f ratio ? should i change the metering rods ? jets ? up or down ? dont get me wrong i like these trucks and id be proud to own one but i dont want the wrong one and im lookign for help. a answer that says "these trucks are 15 years old" is somethign that i already know and its not helpfull.

The trucks are raggedy pieces of shit. Most of the owners refer to them as "hovercrafts" because they are on jackstands hovering over the garage floor more then they are on the road.
In short, they are not the vehicle for you.

Re: newb with questions

The reason no one really wants to help you is because this site has a search feature. Do you know how many people have asked the exact same questions as you? I already answered your question on the propshaft if the boot is torn the propshaft is junk or will soon be. Other side is just a double cardan joint check it like normal. You can buy a good stock used turbo off this site for 200 bucks sometimes, just new they are like triple that. I think that if you left the truck totally stock you are going to have problems sooner or later unless totally treated like a show car. For one thing syclones have hard plastic vacume lines but 15 years and lots of turbo heat really takes its toll on plastic. You don't want a vacume leak. That means lean. I can piss more gpm than the stock intercooler pump flows and it can die at any time. That means sky rocket intake temps. The stock ic lines suck. Fuel pump is weak. Must get guages, the stock guages are a joke. The tranny is rated at 280hp so launching the truck all the time will kill it shortly. The launch is what makes these fast if you don't launch you are runnin 14-15 seconds in the quarter.

Re: newb with questions

It is impossible to own a SyTy without spending and wrenching, its part of owning one. Even the super-low miles trucks have problems, because sitting for a decade is just as bad as being abused.:2cents:

Re: newb with questions

i understand what you guys are saying but assuming you do some prevantative matinence (turbo timer, bov, good boost controller, boost guage,tach,a/f meter) it should be fine right (until i do some upgrades) ? i know you guys are getting decent times from these trucks (low 12's/high 11's or faster) and doing it consistantly. i can handle turning wrenches but it would be nice to have a computer do a lot for you as well. thats why im asking you guys what to expect IF i get my hands on one. hell my dad might not want to trade a sy/ty for my GTO. what goes wrong with these trucks for you to always be working on them ? is it people getting too greedy and wanting more then what their setup can handle ? is it not doing upgrades in the right order ? weak factory parts ? which is also what im asking to watch out for when i go to look at one to buy. i already knwo to look out for the front prop shaft. someone said to check for turbo play (how much is too much ? which way front to back ? side to side ?) its obvious if a tranny is slipping but are there any major areas for cocern ?

who pissed in your wheaties ? this site also has the respond feature (you dont have to if you dont want to) im just trying to ask a few simple questions. i have no clue about these trucks and you guys do.you had to learn about your truck somehow. so just keep in mind how patient and understanding the people were that tought you and have the same respect for others. i will respect you as well until youre a smart ass then ill be a smartass in return. i assume no more then 3,000 people have asked the exact same question as i did. ok maybe 6,000 if you count all the ty's and sy's. im sure theres plenty of others out there that have the same questions that i do and can read the replies/posts that this is getting and hopefully it will help them as well.

I love torque. I've daily driven my current Ty for 60k miles over the last 5 years. My only problem has been transmissions (4 or so rebuilds),BUT I bought my truck blown up already and did a decent "bulletproof on a budget" rebuild. Here's my list:

Stock motor bored .030 over,block fill,TRW forged pistons,L35 rods,ATR cam.Stock heads and intakes are ported and polished.PT54 turbo,3"ATR downpipe with external wastegate,50# injectors,no cat,ATR 3" stainless steel exhaust,Phil Long 50# chip,afpr,Walbro 255 fuel pump,alky injection,custom cold air kit,in cab boost controller,3 gauge pillar pod (boost,fuel pressure,exhaust gas temperature)battery relocated,rear sway bar.John Waller trans,big ass tranny cooler,2800 9/11 converter,Gilbert propshaft.Bloody knuckes,ripped flesh,blood,cussing.

Now all I really did is replace marginal stuff (except the heads) and built a decent truck.I don't even wanna think about the money I've spent, but I'm VERY happy with MY truck.(NOT FOR SALE ;) )

Here's the problem.A whole shitload of trucks have been beat down, neglected and dorked with. You never know exactly what you are getting if you are a newb with no local help.IF you are lucky and loaded, you might be able to find a no mileage gem (like Chris in NYC,who bought a no mileage 93 Ty that has gone 13.4@99 BONE STOCK) or be EXTREMELY lucky and find a no detonated ever stock motored truck (Like Phil Long running 10's or Jeremy Duncan 12.4 with stock turbo,Joe Keller 13.7 Ty)but chances are you'll find one needing a tranny or about to throw a rod.

How bad do you want one? How much money you got?

P.S. The build quality sucks.I hope you love squeeks and rattles.

Re: newb with questions

its not my money that will buy it. i have a 69 GTO Judge that my dad wants (he had a 68 growing up) and i told him that if he gets me a sy/ty ill trade him for the GTO. i see you guys use ATR stuff on these trucks a lot. is this company the best of the best for these trucks or what ? if you dont mind me asking what will yout ty run in the 1/4 after all these mods ? i have a pretty good idea as t owhat i want to do with the truck when i get one. the only thing is that id be giving up more in the 1/4 times if i get a sy/ty but a sy/ty would get my GTO in the 0-60 because i cant get the traction of a awd. if i get a sy/ty id have to dump a lot into it to get me to the low 12/high 11 mark im at with the GTO but the GTO is in the body shop and i dont have the parts in the motor to get me to the 12/11 sec range yet theyre sitting around collecting dust.

ATR is out of business. My best run is 7.68@90 in the 1/8 1.69 60',which is a super high 11/12 flat.I can do 0-60 in the 3's on cobblestones,so on the street the only thing I fear is big bikes.I can take stock 600's up to 70ish.

Ricers are a waste of gas.

thats pretty impressive. i can see why you went thru your share of trannies.
I am 99.9% sure all of my problrms relate to the small sprag.I'd break it and keep driving it until it's shrapnel would **** up other things. My last rebuild consisted of replacing it with a cryo treated custom part.I knew immediately when it snapped, and dropped the trans for rebuild as soon as I got home.Every other component in the trans was undamaged.

Re: newb with questions

ive seen rebuild kit that makes a 700R4 hold up to 500hp and i forgot how much torque but it was a lot. why dont people use these ? it kinda sucks that its jsut one part that goes wrong in the tranny.

Re: newb with questions

Im glad this guy never bought a SY/TY, what an idiot and a jerk. I mean I ask questions, but I have also tried to read every thread as far as I can before I ask, I just understand some of them. This guy would have ruined a SY/TY that would have been good for someone that cares about them. Glad hes gone!!!
Hey how do you post a thread?? LOL Yeh I really dont know?? LOL

Re: newb with questions

Take it easy there BK. Not everyone has the same sense of values or opinions. He has the right to ask DAQ's same as you and I do. God knows I've asked my fair share of them on here.

Click on the forum you want to post the new thread in and then look just above the first topic and you'll see the "NEW TOPIC" button. It's that easy...
