newb with questions

i want a sy ty

hey everyone im a newb here. i have a 1969 GTO Judge with a 428 ( not the origional engine) in it. i have it in the body shop now getting rid of some rust bubbles. the parts i have for it sitting around will get me low 12's/high 11's consistantly. i am considering trading this to my dad if he will buy me a typhoon or syclone. id rather have the typhoon but im not gonna be pickey. im used to working on old cars that dont have a computer so im not used to the computer controlled cars. if i can get a typhoon (he had a 68 gto growing up and he wants my gto bad so its in the bag as soon as i can find one and if i decide i want it) what should i expect from this truck ? i know they run in the mid 13's stock but how hard is it to get these to run 11/12's consistantly and how much would it cost to get them there ? i know its not as simple as throwing a big turbo and go theres several other things that need done as well but what? im looking for realiability as well. i dont want to make 1 pass in the 11's and tear it up. what works and what doesnt? also can anyone tell me about matinence on these as well as what to look for (or i should say what would raise red flags) when looking at the truck. i like the attetion my gto gets and its plenty fast enough but the gas mileage sucks on it. i want a sleeper with the AWD so traction woudlnt be a problem. no one around here has a clue what these trucks can do. i appreciate any help anyone will give me.

im interested in knowing about the matinence end as well and how well they hold up ( if you want to get crazy with the boost how much can a stock block/internals handle)? when i need a part how hard it will be to get them? you guys know these trucks a lot better then me. i really need and appreciate the advice.

Do you own a set of jackstands??? lol:)

Mine should by no means be used to judge (pun intended hehe) all SyTy's by, but in a year of owning it I've only logged about 3000 mi. All of that was driving it as a daily for about a month and a half. 1 injector took a crap and its been dead ever since.

However, if you get your little paws on one, you'll be hooked for life. These things are worse than a drug habit.

I think if you are seriously looking for reliability I would look somewhere else. I don't know if it is just me and the sy ty people that I know but it just seems never ending. It is pretty easy to get select parts, you have to pay out the ars for cladding though. There is a post that tookycat wrote that is an awesome refrence to what you are asking about a stock truck running low twelves. Do a search on this it will help you out alot. Oh and I don't know about anyone else but my truck gets not so good gas mileage maybe if I'd let off the gas but it wouldn't be any fun then. Anyways good luck.

When mine is running it averages about 25mpg. Gotta love a 6-spd! lol:)

Sorry to get off the subject but how much boost do you run with that eaton, and can you run leaded gas in Iraq? Also v8 sy I live in Eau Claire, WI I have a bunch of cocky buick friends here and a friend with a 15,000 mile sy nicest I've ever seen. We will have to get together for a cruise or something in spring.

SyTyless......for now!
Re: newb with questions

T-56 is serving in Iraq with the US millitary, his truck is back in the states. One of our friends has 2 Sys & a Ty, but one of his Sys is in our back yard. Express is located in Milwaukee, and we are interested in his truck and I also think Supersports10 is located around here somewhere. We might have to form Badgerland SyTy if more owners keep coming out of the woodwork!:rotf:

Re: newb with questions

what should i watch out for if i see one in person. i heared something about if the ABS light is on all the time its a sign that some sensor is bad or something like that and its around a $1200 fix. is this true ? what other things should raise red flags when looking at these trucks ?

Re: newb with questions

Lots of people drop abs so you can get a unit pretty cheap if you look around. There are tons of articles on buying a syty. Here is a couple things that I would check that no one has mentioned. First drive the truck make sure it makes a good full pull without falling on it's face and no tink tink. Good idea to run a datamaster run on it before you buy. Make sure tranyy shifts nice and hard. Really talk to the owner see what this trucks life has been like and what kind of problems they've had. Seats and center console are big bucks so that is a plus if they are good shape. Front prop shaft is not cheap either check the boot make sure it isn't torn. Check the turbo for front to back play there should be a little side to side action. When I bought my syclone it had 49,000 I bought it from a member on here (He knows who he is) beautiful truck everything is very nice. I was so into checking everything else over that I never payed attention to motor oil. When I got home with it and pulled the oil plug the oil was so thick that it just like drooped out of the pan. Nothing but cam and main bearing through everything, changed the oil and it knocked so bad I wouldn't even drive it. I pulled the engine days later. Just be thorough and try to run datamaster or at least bring a syty expert with to look. There are lots of good guys on this board.
Good luck!

IF you are looking for reliability AND 11 secs in the quarter, let everyone know where you find it. As far as reliability, maintenance and the like, just like every other car, if you take care of it and don't dirve it like you stole it all the time, these are good trucks, or at least mine has been. I have a 92 Typhoon that gave me no problems, except for the front end wearing out - but that saw the drag strip only once, and street racing was not in my world either, so I guess you could say it was babied. I changed all the fluids when I bought it, maintained it regularly, and today I wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and drive it cross country. I consider mine trustworthy, but have heard all kinds of horror stories through this board. Parts are basically very available as there is a lot that are just plain s-10 parts. Mileage on mine has not seen too high, but I have a heavy foot - you should see 15-18 (hwy) depending on how you drive.

I guess what I'm saying is if you take care of your new Ty, it should be a good vehicle.

Good Luck

Re: newb with questions

i know if im gonna get a sy/ty im gonna beat on it some. why else would you own one ? but if these trucks are the type that im always gonna have my head under the hood then i dont know if i want one. another thing that worries me is that i dont know what to expect out of the sy/ty so when i go to look at one and drive it i dont knwo what it should feel like when i floor it. i dont know anythign about turbos so how do you check for "play" in the turbo ? how much movement is ok and how much isnt ? also what about the front prop shaft ? anythign else i should check for ?
