Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

alright I've had enough!!! I love my Ty, but hate how it rides!!! Every bump I swear the windows are going to fall out of it! I cranked down the torsion bars up front (not all the way) and used 2" drop blocks in rear. I love how the truck sits with the 18" wheels but I can't stand the bump hard suspensionless ride!! Any tips to make it ride better?? I would love to convert to front coil-over suspension and rear to fiberglass leafs and coil-overs but I can see spending that much money! Is it really worth the couple thousand for this conversion?? I could return it stock ride height, but it didn't ride great like that either. Any ideas, experience with this??

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

Check to make sure the front isnt on the bumpstops, or very close. Ditto with the rear, and also check the shocks. Both the Sy and Ty are lowered, and ride fine IMO.

Welcome to the world of 18s! Try some different shocks. Perferrably adjustables like the QA1s. Also many people lower rides to the point where they bottom out the stock shocks. Check your measurement. Your ride height shoud be close to the center of the shock travel.

I have adjustable QA1'a on my El Camino and its lowered a bunch. That thing rides like a dream!! Right now the ty has 30kmile KYB's on it and it bottoms out on the stops. maybe I will try using a shorter stop and better shocks....

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

i had 3' blocks on my ty and it'd rattle your teeth out, i switch it to 2' blocks and kyb shocks and it rides great. i'd throw some kyb momex's on it and give it a shot.

Yeah, cranking the torsion bars and throwing lowering blocks shouldn't change your ride quality unless your riding on your bump stops or bottoming out your shocks. I my sy is lowered the same way as your truck, I was running on middle aged monomax's when I first bought it, and I thought it rode too soft. I've recently changed to Koni's and have them set full stiff. They're better, but I still think they're too soft. I can feel the truck hit the bump stops every once in a while on a good bump.

Is it possible to trim the stock bump stops? Are there shorter replacement bump stops?

Yes you can trim them, never seen shorter ones though.

Simple hacksaw or sharp utility knife should work.

energy suspension sells different size bump stops. they have taller and shorter. I think that's better than just cutting them

Ditch the 2" drop blocks and get some Belltech 3" drop leafsprings for the rear. The Belltechs will drop a SyTy 2" in the back and keeps the rear wheels nice and centered.

I would not recommend fiberglass leafs if you do a lot of 1/8mi, 1/4mi racing, or do alot of boost launches...they will probably crack quickly if you do. Also, with the fiberglass leafsprings the ride will get very bouncy.

My '92 was lowered with drop blocks and the ride was terrible. Changed to the Belltechs and the ride is 100x better now.

Were did you find the Belltech leafs?? I did a search and can't come up wtih anything. Do S-10 leafs work the same?

I think I'm going to do Bilstein sports series shocks, shorter bump stops, steering stabilizer and belltech leafs. Should be an in expensive way to improve the ride a bunch.

Installing the front coil overs ride much better that the stock suspension.
I rode in my friends Sy w/Dustins coil overs & it rides much better than mine being stock OG.

BEL - 5954 from Summit Racing.

Beltech drop leafs are 3" drop for a regular S10/Sonoma/Jimmy....sot that's a 2" drop on a SyTy.

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

I gotta say I don't agree with the fiberglass spring comment above as far as our SyTy' go with Flex-A-Forms any way. Good quaility shocks are must on these trucks and properly installed Flex-A-Forms (correct spring rate) with good bushings are realy great on our trucks. Some have experimented with different / custom rates and had problems. Also as far as the racing goes, again I disagree. Flex-A-Forms with Cal Trac's hook DAMN good and ride fine too. Broken Flex-A-Forms are generaly caused by improper installation, other suspension problems (read bad bushings other parts etc.), or using regular traction / "slapper" bars. I have them on two Ty's and Sy and they are great.

In fact I just cut a 1.54 60ft last week on my bone stock (other than suspension) daily driver Ty and it rides fine lowered front and rear. Other fellas here on board have them and like them as well. Check around before you count them out.

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

My friend,Deco Daves Syclone snapped his flexiforms in half (installed correctly) when he Dynoed his Sy & made 650 ft lbs of torque.
No Caltracs or traction bars.

He had them replaced for free + shiping, but they did snap.

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

I didn't say they NEVER break, hell anything can have a defect. I have broken 6 sets of stock spring from 4 O.E.M.'s throught the years, one set of Bell Tech's and two sets of Direct Connection / Mopar springs. I figure that the Flex-A-Forms got replaced plus shipping shows the old fella (damn forgot his name now) stands by his products. That's a hell of a lot more than I got from any of the other after market companies I got springs from, which by the way was a polite but firm "Uh.... warranty on race car parts? Sorry no warranty but we may be able to give you a discount on another set (plus shipping I might add) but I have to check with the boss.....".

Did he put the replacement set back on? If so how did they go after that? I think the my other Ty is making more torque than that and I will admitt it has not been to the track yet but I have been testing the launch on it and it has not shown any issues as of yet at the airport tarmac?

sorry if i didnt read many of the replies this may have been said but: i know u have bilstiens on ur lowered truck or some blown out w/e kind ones.. get some KYB gassers it will make a world of difference, it did for me. hopefully im correct..

i did 2 lowering jobs one to my truck and one to a feinds the difference is night and day between my KYB and him with his Bilstiens.. he will admit, his truck drives like crap.. very bouncy.

Re: Lowered TY rides like sh*t!!!

He has not driven his Sy too much after he got a replacement set,(electrical issues).
I believe owners name is George,& he was getting a little flaky returning phone messages last I heard.
It did take a little while for my friend to get a hold of George & to get another set of Flexiforms.

Also the set my friend got,he got a little stiffer than what most guys were using, like 225 lb spring rate, IIRC??

So no special wedges are needed to keep the rear wheels centered?
