How is this possible?

So, I was looking up some historical information as questions and comments have been flooding in on the DeMuro video (over 500 comments...many douchey, others legit).

And I pulled one of my favorite threads (the "Dale" thread):
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=48229

Then I looked at the date. APRIL 2007!. How in the hell did almost 10 years go by since this thread??

Seriously, I thought it maybe 5 years old at the most. Crazy how time whizzes by.

I see you're 51, just wait 'till you're 74...:rotf::rotf: It only speeds up. That vacation you've been talking about? Take it now. Something you need to say to your best friend? Get going. I just lost mine a little over a month ago. I say all this to encourage you, not to hijack the thread.

Understood.

Re: How is this possible?

There were approx. 50-75 active threads a day back then. For the past week it's averaged about 12. Mostly [-]junk[/-] parts for sale. There is no sense of enthusiasm or dedication to these trucks or this site. Even the post whores are gone.

I think the future interest in these trucks is going to be concentrated in the NE part of the country. As the SyTys in that area continue to rot and deteriorate, trucks from other areas of the country will migrate to the NE. Tom has done a good job of supporting the SyTy community and promoting his activities in the NE, but the further from Buffalo one is, the less impact this support has. Out here SM influence is nil. Shipping is too costly, 3 hour time difference. Events generally too far (cost) to attend.
As long as Tom stays in the game in the NE, I think SyTy's have a future there. But in other parts of the country, the interest is fading fast. Especially for Typhoons. Syclones will always have a following.

I have no idea how long .net will survive, but it appears to be in a death spiral. You'll never see another "what am I doing here" type thread on here again.

Re: How is this possible?

Well I just took some steps to get my heap going again so will doubtless have a few questions. :rotf:

I wrote to the previous owners of PAS and got nowhere unfortunately. Was hoping for a goldmine but Peelerboy was it.

Let's hope for the best for .net though. I know FB drew a large number away but I got sick of all the memes and the spelling was worse than here so maybe others will be back too. This is still the largest repository of SyTy info so there's life in here yet.

Maybe some of those viewers of the Fallon show, the subsequent Eastwood Typhoon article and DeMuro's piece will translate into owners with the desire to resurrect and preserve theses trucks. Fingers crossed!

As younger generations "as myself (22)" get a hold of these trucks, and hopefully true enthusiasts as i consider myself, the more i feel like this forum will come back. You cannot beat the information you can get from a good forum such as this one with the history it has. unfortunately these trucks are not as "plentiful" as they once were, so naturally the forum has slowed down and big social media platforms such as facebook will remain more dominate for ease of communication. BUT, all real, and important information will always remain at this site which no facebook, will be able to obtain

Then there's only one solution: SPORTMACHINES WEST

I'm thinking Reno, Vegas, or Scottsdale. (since California is not business-friendly).

Re: How is this possible?

There's another aspect I didn't think of last night that makes these trucks appeal to the NE crowd over the West.

Emissions testing.

These are tough to get to pass even when stock, unmodified, and running seemingly well. Most of California, Tucson, Phoenix, Vegas and Reno metropolitan areas all have emissions testing. While many areas of the NE have Inspections which have their own bugaboos, its not the same deterrent as emissions compliance.

My 91 DD so far has always passed, but is on the borderline. The Ty was a bitch, and only finally passed because "I know people". The Corvette should pass, but I went to the hassle of getting it registered in a non-tested county. The newer cars like the Cayenne passes every time. So does the Super Duty in Tucson.

This emissions testing and compliance is HUGE. For a tough vehicle like the SyTy, you can be sure this aspect of ownership is a consideration when contemplating a purchase or continued ownership.

Is there not a exemption on the emissions testing based on age? Here in my emissions county in Texas the Ty hits 25years January and I will be safety only. The Ty has been good passing with no issues. It's the pain and hassle of finding a place that has someone who can perform the two speed idle test without screwing it up. And it always seems as if one of three testing tools screw up while performing the test. The ignition sync or the tailpipe sniffer.

x2...and what about mileage driven per year? I think the exempt status here in PA applies to cars driven less than 2,500 miles per year (My syty's always qualify.)

My guess is that California is not so lenient.

Re: How is this possible?

Pretty sure it's 30 years in Calif. However I cheat on the smog test. I have the Sy registered outside the "Bay Area Air Quality Management District." Hence it's exempt.

I have a customers Typhoon that will be heading to the San Fran Bay Area after the new year. It's going to have a cat and Big stuff 3, he has assured me it will pass. Even with the EGR removed, I'm not familiar with there smog tests so I can not say. All I know is that the big stuff will pass the truck in Texas even without a cat.

This trend of less activity on SyTy.net is happening across many different forums. People are posting on Facebook. I don't complete get it, Facebook is convenient for pictures, memes, video and the general comments, but it is pointless to ask technical questions that become buried after a day and cannot be searched for. I guess some just want instant gratification.

Technically, in CA it will not pass with the EGR removed because the visual inspection requires verification that all emission control devices are present on the vehicle. Whether the inspector knows what he or she is looking for is another question.

Same situation here in Texas

Re: How is this possible?

I remember the transition from e-mail distributions list to forums. The diehard email list fans were slow to adapt and some never made the transition. Email lists seemed more personable, but the forums allowed one to filter what they read what and were much easier to search through than an email list [Though on an email list you could save the relevant email.] On a large mailing list you might get 100-200 emails a day which was chore to keep up with. I see parallel to that happening now, but I see Facebook having less benefits over a forum than a forum's advantage over the emailing distribution list.

Re: How is this possible?

The whole reason why the FB group was started is cause the forum needs a major update in software and we had closed off open registration due to the loads of spam it was getting. It's still an issue and we have to manual approve people to get on here.
