Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

Why is it that GN's are worth so much more than SyTy's? Is it because their motors are better able to handle higher HP without a lot of exotic upgrades?

give it 10 years. when collectors start thinking back to the early 90's for valuable automobiles. Then they'll come looking.

SyTy's are in the "adolescent" stage, where they're still readily available for decent prices, but they havent caught the eyes of the average collector.

I always reference the gas crunch years, when big block cars could be had for cents on the dollar. If you had the mind then to grab a couple 427 vettes, and hemi chargers, you'd have them now.

:2cents:

And typical, when SyTys reach high demand, they wont be as easy to aquire as they are now.

I was actually going to mention your first point in my post, however realistically, there is only a 4-5 year difference between the popular '87 GN's and the '91-'93 SyTy's. I am still not convinced that there is enough of a year gap there to make a difference. In other words, they are close enough to each other in years that I would think they should *both* be equally as valuable now, unless they simply never will be.

I think it's because there was no real marketing from gm for the sy/ty's . After all, you can't haul or tow with them, they are too heavy to really do well in racing, not as reliable as a gn. When they were being sold in the early 90's they were expensive as hell, that doesn't help. I can't see the market even in the next 10 years getting strong for these things,unless they are low miles and factory stock. Other wise they are just a 92 or 93 GMC.

The GN is a two-door, RWD muscle car with a bullet-proof reputation. Enough were made that there is a huge aftermarket world to support them.

SyTys are...trucks, produced in limited numbers with a reputation for shotiness, supported only by....US. ;)

Would not have stated it much differently myself. Lots of GN's and a/m parts which made them fast. Word gets out to allot of people and demand is created and prices hold and or go up. Everybody wants one.

With our trucks, "the word" was never out. Still many people do not know what they are. Many think they have a 3.8 in them or have some other wrong idea about the truck. When new, they had a reputation of throwing rods which turned many in the "enthusiest" crowd to a different direction. Difficult to obtain parts for (compared to the norm) and what parts are available are usually priced higher. Many check marks in the negative column. One last note, as the years passed and these trucks got figured out, many complained they could not get the vehicle to run on the big end. This also hurt their reputation as they were called a aerodynamic brick. It wasn't until we made the mod to vortecs that these trucks started to really run. The poor performance of the original heads did not help the reputation at all. All of the aforementioned never gave these trucks a great reputation to the general public and their demand never took off.

It would have been a different story if 10+ sources were available for a plug and play chip that put you into the 11's like the GN.

I feel the same way. Seems to me people really just don't care about them. I remember trying to race a guy in a Viper once and he declined but said it was nice to see a TY actually running. I'd say that sums it up.

I agree that everyone has the wrong info about our trucks. I always get "that has a twin turbo" or 3.8 in it. At all the car shows I've taken mine to everyone walks by it as if it's only some black lowrider or something. The only place my truck has gotten any respect was at the dragstrip, when Jack, Erik & I took them to Houston's 1/8th mile track.

SyTy = truck/suv

I was wondering this too.

The Barret Jackson deal came up this week.

TY = $17k
GN= $30k+
TTA = $30k +

Very good description... As are others...

As a owner of a T-Type,Buick Powered Camaro and Two Typhoons and a basket case Syclone

I work on alot of both at the shop. The buick engine does withstand alot of abuse and has a safty valve

with the headgaskets. If our trucks detonate we wipe the bearings out of the engine. This kills alot of

trucks. I think the general public has no clue about Sy/Ty's or alot of mis-information.

The best part of our trucks is the people who own them... I only go on the Buick boards for parts.

Events with buick's are kind of clickish.. I'm a outsider since I'm a hybrid. It's not that way at the Sy/Ty

events at all...everyone is cool. Thus why I hang out on this board and support every one here!

I've got a TTA and a 92 Typhoon both bone stock. The TTA will run circles around the TY. Anybody know ( or recommend) anybody around Charlotte NC that knows how to put some spunk in the TY?

its really like anything else...
watch barrett jacksons and you will get a good idea
last year and the year before 70's Plymouth and dodge cars were sexiest cars, the best
fetching 3/4 of a million i believe, yet rare camaros and vets barely broke 200 grand
the year doe have some bearing but i believe the generation that bought cars, and
not the current trend to buy pickups... will dictate whats desirable and whats not.
If we wait about 5 to 10 years i think the current crop of pickup buyers will be have
some disposable income or be inheriting from an aging population of baby boomers
now in their 70s or 80s. Most ppl by what they lusted for as a kid. For me it was the
70's muscle cars and the exotics. For my daughters 25 yr old bf.... its pickups (he btw
is all over my project car... he was pretty much the first one to recognize the engine)

Ive probably got it all wrong lol but Its fun to dream of finding a 70's Pantara that is
unmolested. Imagine an exotic with a muscle car engine.

Let me also add that if GMC had another 2 or 3 years to develop and refine SyTy's, it may be a different story today. The early GN's were not much to speak of and in one year (between 85 and 86) some key changes happened that refined the car and is making it sought after twenty years later.

Even though 86 and 87 GNs are older than SyTys, I find them "tighter" and more refinded.

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

Canadians are esspecially in the dark with SyTy, because they were not sold new here. I don't imagine they were even advertised? So SyTys are really a private, personal interest, as to others they are just a lowered Blazer not realizing they are looking at the coolest domestic performace vehicle made. The SyTy supporters are numbered right now, just like the vehicles are numbered. They should use a done up Typhoon in the next fast and furious to replace the GN, there's an excellent way to broadcast the performance "S10 Blazer" and grab everyones attention. Questions will be asked...the word Typhoon will be all over the place...

And then they will stolen with more frequency. No thanks. :tdown:

I didn't buy mine as an investment and don't really care where the value goes, however, I'd like to hang on to and not see it end up in "chop shop" because they are suddenly popular due to a pop film.

I don't mind the incognito "sleeper" aspect of our trucks.

This may sound sorta lame, but I wonder if the most recent FAST AND FURIOUS movie got the GN a LOT of public attention.

I know a lot of people never knew of the GN before that movie ---

I watched the fast and furious the other day and was thinking to myself what would have happened if the lightning he drove was a syclone

Mint low mile trucks still sell in the 20's.

The one that went through Barrettt brought decent money.
