Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

I was just saying that if the Typhoon was in a big time film, they will gain more attention and demand and grab clueless peoples interest. You guys were talking about how people got the wrong ideas about SyTy back when they were new, and from there the demands always been low. So there are pros and cons:
I like how the SyTys are in a way a secret, I talked to a local owner and he said nobody has a clue what the hell it is, but when the odd person sees it that does they get sooo excited to get to see one. They are a big thrill to those who have the passion, the market is still strong enough that first time drivers like kids can't afford them, they are grabbing readily available 5.0 Mustangs etc. That is a plus for the limited amount still out there...
The movie Fast And Furious deffinatly brought the GN to everyones eyes and desires of cool muscle cars, watching the movie with the GN looking so cool makes everyone want one wich allows for the word to spread = maintaining the demend + higher cost of the GN.

This may sound sorta lame, but I wonder if the most recent FAST AND FURIOUS movie got the GN a LOT of public attention.

Yes.. it has. I did some work on a local guy's car and he can't get anyone to play with him on the street since it was the car that was in the movie. His runs low 12's@117mph with Crappy tires so consider it a mid 11 car with good tires with stock engine/turbo/downpipe/tune/chip/Converter.

This is simply false. GN's went up in value WAY before that stupid movie. In fact, other than some recognition and some sales, I would say the movie did very litte for the GN world which was ALREADY hot before they even wrote the film.

If anything, (outside of B-J), GN's have gotten a bit softer in the past year. I watch that market very closely and prices (due to economy mostly) have dropped few grand over previous years.

Yes your right. But I bet if the the GN was the one with a bad rep, and the Sy was as popular as the GN at this time...it woulnd't of been a GN in the movie! I don't know, it dosn't really matter none the less...it is what it is.

Always different opinions about what the vehicles worth will be and how high it can go. What everyone is forgetting is that nobody can accurately predict the future values. Some may guess close. Others will be way off. I am keeping two if my Syclones all original. And the Typhoon as close to original as I can. It only has rear springs and a catback. Came that way. Not doing to so much for the value they may bring. More so just to have an original example of what they were when new. Performance, etc. We may all be surprised what pristine trucks are worth in another 5-10 years. I can't believe I have had my original truck 17 years now.

You guys are also forgetting that the GN's were around for more then 1 or two years. They started in the early 80's, the name got out that they had decent performance. Then they kept making them better and ended with the best.

If our trucks ran for 6 years people would know our trucks better, and there would be more of them. Resulting in more people having them and knowing what they actually are.

True, plus the aftermarket demand would be larger. Of coarse there would be a much larger production run too.

And even prior to that, the turbo 3.8L was an option for the Regal starting in 1978. With 10 years of producing essentially the same car, you get refinement, street cred, and exposure.....all things we failed to receive due to the limited run of the trucks.

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

The GN/Ttypes prior to 86 were junk. I don't work on any of those unless it's a Intercooled converson.

Most of the other stuff at the time was even worse off with smog and emmision crap so they might have looked like "somthing" back then but they were not even close to the performance the 86/7s could do with some tuning and minor parts.
Maby if we got some more mag. press with our trucks we can catch up.. we got good people here!

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

Word gets out to allot of people and demand is created and prices hold and or go up.

With our trucks, "the word" was never out. Still many people do not know what they are. Many think they have a 3.8 in them or have some other wrong idea about the truck. When new, they had a reputation of throwing rods which turned many in the "enthusiest" crowd to a different direction. One last note, as the years passed and these trucks got figured out, many complained they could not get the vehicle to run on the big end. This also hurt their reputation as they were called a aerodynamic brick. It wasn't until we made the mod to vortecs that these trucks started to really run. The poor performance of the original heads did not help the reputation at all. All of the aforementioned never gave these trucks a great reputation to the general public and their demand never took off.

It would have been a different story if 10+ sources were available for a plug and play chip that put you into the 11's like the GN.

I agree with some of your points. The word was out years ago, about SyTy's being stop light warriors, but it came apparent they were unreliable and not easy to tune. In my local racing scene, a older guy bought a Syclone and ran low 13's. Another local racer bought one and started modifying it, it never ran much better than high 12's and he blew 3 motors and got a reputation as a unreliable POS. GN got their reputation (and demand) from racing (track and street)

IMO if SyTy were plug and play modifyable, they would be worth more than they are now, it would help it they were a little more reliable (forged piston's like PAS requested from GM would have helped) but the head gasket issue don't deter GN's either.

If most anyone could just throw in a chip and run mid 12's or stick in a bigger turbo/chip injectors and run 11's they would be far more popular. Yes Tooky has done as have others but their are ton SyTy's that should be running that fast but don't. It is far from plug and play. They need to be easy to tune are aren't. The cars with legendary reputations pretty much have this all in common.

Fags like T-bag (they are everywhere) just KNOW,I mean it's in their dipshit DNA,know that stupid V6 trucks ain't shit.

I wish you guys could have seen and heard how cocky and sure that douchebag was that his brother's
slow fat faggish SRT-10 would destroy my Ty.

He was all "You'll get me out of the hole, but I'll reel you in."

:haha: Clueless.

I kinda figured I'd be doing 70 once his no driving poser ass got traction, and guess what? I was right.

I gang raped him on the launch, and kept it WOT for 1/2 a mile (Wasn't gonna let him do a river flyby. You know he woulda)

He told me he let off @ 135 when I was 10 Greyhound bus lengths ahead of him and I was still pulling. (of course he would deny this cause he's a lying ****ing liar)

This is all I know. My Ty was squirrely as ****.Speedo bouncing off the pag.Fat queer truck getting smaller and smaller in my rearview.

I slammed on the brakes, smelt the smell from the brake pads, looked down and the speedo was still bouncing off the peg.

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

I definitely didn't get into these trucks for any kind of collector value. The only value my truck has is the obvious benefit on the street. Aside from the new cars with their outrageous traction control (new Z06) it got to a point where it was pointless to build 800hp for the street. That's when I new it was time to get a Syclone (actually I bought the Ty first). Personally I still think it was the right decision. My brother has an 800+ hp GN....and he know's he'll have his hands full when the Syclone is finished. I don't think that the Sy/Ty will ever have the kind of value going for it that the GN's do.

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

Its all because of the fast and furious movies. Did you see the value climb of Supras and some other not so super cars like Honda Civics? :rotf: If only we could get Mr. Syclone's truck into a fast and furious movie. Our value would Sky ROCKET! Matter of fact, some people did not even know what a GN was until Fast and Furious movie came out.

Proves people are stupid and beleive anything they see in a movie or on TV. Like when "Horse Power TV" does a supercharger install in a 1/2hr and says it's easy.. The leave out the fact that half the stuff is a total pain in the ass to get to and takes alot of time. Then like Magic it's running! I don't think Billy Bob with two left handed screwdrivers under the shade tree has a clue.
Love to see them make working on a Sy/Ty look easy. Lol.

Re: Grand Nationals vs the SyTy's....why is the value so different?

For everyone wanting a SyTy to be in a movie so they can gain some exposure, I see that as the absolute worst thing that could happen.

We all know how quickly SyTys can blow up on a new, inexperienced owner. I can see it now, SyTy in a Movie and over 1/2 the trucks for sale blown up 1 week later. No thanks

I'm not saying I want their value to be in the pits; it would be nice to see them maintain some value as a collector vehicle. But I'd rather not have trucks blowing up left and right. I want to be able to buy one again down the road.

I agree 100%!! It does suck taking my Ty to shows and have EVERYONE walk by and not acknowledge the thing because it looks like just a lowrider with a body kit. However, that's their ignorance not mine.
When I first bought my Typhoon and joined the site I was blown away to find out that I seemed to be one of a few members who only own one!! I didn't understand why and now that I have had my first Typhoon for over a year, I can't wait until I can afford to start my collection of these trucks!! I actually hope the market stays this way long enough for me to beef up my Syclone fund!!!!

Yep, good thing the value is where it's at right now and hasn't inscreased a fair bit. That way, enthusiasts that want a SyTy bad enough can get one. Such as my self. Looking at the price range/milage for GN on Ebay there is a large difference in price, they are worth alot more then SyTy, and agree there is no competing. Not to mention, there will never be 25 SyTys on Ebay all at once! Haha.
