y'all got that right.

the moment i turned off the key the 1st thing i thought was get the heck out of this truck NOW as fast as you can. not knowing if there was any other danger.

and yeah phil you might be right.

one thing i can say and i hope everyone and anyone considering using theses mt tires has c clip eliminators in his rear housing. then if it breaks it doesnt spin...

one other thing i need to add here:

when this happens the only control you have is the brakes. I know i turned it the opposite way as you all know you need to do. but as you can see you really cant control it. you can only try.... you dont ever want to go thru this.

In fact when i got out of the truck i noticed the front wheels were all the way towards the right.

I had all the safety equipment with the c clip stuff being the only thing lacking.... figures ....

it didnt really hit home till this morning when i saw the video, 1st time my pulse did go up watching it.

moser makes axles for 2wd s-10's so they should/could make some in 4wd length.
the 8.5 is a bear to find, one guy on s-seriesforum looked for so long that he gave up and bought one over the counter from GM. something like $1400 that way.

Wow! Amazing you stopped that fast with no significant damage to the truck! I know the caltracs have prevented me from scraping more important things going over bumps, but I never thought they could be used like that!

Glad to hear you made it out ok. That is definitley a scary situation. The same thing kinda happened to me on my first time out with my sy. My center section blew and the parts knocked both my c-clips off and both axles and wheels came out and passed me up on the return road.
I went with a 8.5 from DTS, it took them about 2 weeks to ship, and it fit perfect. It has ford bearing ends, 3inch tubes, with wilwood discs. Bad thing was it cost about 3K. I would have went with an 8 3/4 but they said I couldn't get that one with a full spool, so I went with the 8.5. I know one guy with a monte carlo that went 8.45 in the 1/4, cutting 1.27 60fts, with the 8.5, so I think that rear end would handle our trucks. Ed, I think it will take you at least till the end of next year to get your 60fts into the 1.20's :) Again, glad your ok.

Ed,

I love to listen to all of your runs and this one has to be the most exciting. Glad to see & hear you and the other guy walked away without any significant damage.

BTW - I put a currie rear in my truck. You may want to look into there rear ends and they shipped mine in two weeks also.

Something JUST NOT right about that line... But oh well I guess..

Glad to see the only major thing hurt was your pride, and everyone walked away...

I dont wanna see anyone get hurt running these trucks !

Be for you let a bone yard sell you an 8.5 make sure it’s NOT from a ZR2 4X4 S-10!
Your stock sy rear axel is about 4”longer than a 2X S-10 and the ZR2 is about 4” longer
than yours!! All the ZR2 4X4’s have 8.5’s.

tell ya what harry is telling me ford 9inch.
we had allready talked about 1.3x 60ft being a possibility before this broke.

Just seems to me with a 9inch, 16psi launch and some track prep...well who knows. hate to toot my own horn, but maybe before the end of next year. fwiw riding home i asked harry how much we left with on the 1.42 60ft. he said it was 12 psi. we broke this at 16 psi.

marty currie is who harry told me he also used . they are who i will be in contact with this coming week.

I told harry i wont go down the track again till we have a safe solution. he told me he couldnt agree more.

for the rest of you all out there that want to push it i also told matt hoover to have him make his dad watch the video and change out his stock setup before something breaks. c clips style rears are just not safe when you start making power into the low 11's or anthing beyond the 10's.
kind of amazing no one has gotten hurt yet. let this be a wakeup call for eveyone in this community to do things in a safe way!!!

Glad your oK!

It happens so fast that you don't have time to get scared about it until after it's over and you think about it for a while. I broke my old suspension and almost lost control at the big end of the track going 124 mph last year...still don't know how I kept it from rolling as I was everywhere but straight. I loaded it on the trailer and didn't unload it till it went to a frame builder/suspension guy and said "Do whatever YOU THINK IS RIGHT"...as at these speeds we should let the pros tell us how to stay alive. This is not an area to guess at. It's also the very best place to spend "what ever is needed"...because our families need us and friends want all of us around and healthy. I have two friends in wheel chairs from racing and lost a close friend to drag racing. He blew a front tire and lost it. Would probably have lived if he had a least a five-point harness. His stock harness broke sometime when his car was rolling and he got crushed as his body came part way out of the car.

This is one reason that I am not a fan if the green dot retreads. I wouldn't want to see one of these come apart on the front of our trucks. Maybe you could get by using them on back, but I personally won't....on the front, no way.

With regards to rear end...I had Moser do up their best 7.5" with the ford bearings, best axles, etc.... it came setup for my Wilwood brakes. We should'nt have a problem with their 7.5 "setup as long as we stay with AWD. It would not handle a 2wd setup.

I believe some have used the 12 bolt rear ends in the sy's...but we had difficulties trying it get one setup under the ty....thus my chioce for the built 7.5. It was around $1,500 form Moser.

Again, glad your safe Ed. We know that you will do the right thing as far as safety is concerned.

TO EVERYONE....

We should have a SAFETY FORUM/TOPIC and put our past and current experiences and solutions on there. This shoud be from from cuts and bruises, chemicals in the face, jack stand supporting, pinching fingers, fuel leaks, etc... didn't someone recently get their finger in the turbo...?

Some...and most of these safety issues (the less serious ones) often seem humorius after the fact, but the the reality is that these things can happen to any of us and in some cases could be serious or even life threating. A forum for this would make all of us think a little more on how we approach things and what is needed, as we go faster and faster.

just keep in mind the 9" likes to soak up power. Glad to see you kept it off the wall. I told you those MT tires work! :D

Agreed. A 9" is overkill IMO but its your moolah.

An 8.5 with quality gears and posi will prolly outlive you cause the rear diff isnt taking all the power. Remember, youve got the front diff taking some of the power which gets back to the overkill thingy again.

My .02 FWIW.

You can put a 9" housing in it with a 12 bolt chunk. so you get the convienence of the 9" with the superior hypoid angle of the 12 bolt.
I personally wouldn't use a 9" in your application. A good 8.5 or 12 bolt takes plenty of cars in the 9's without the benefit of all wheel drive.
