What now? (UPDATED!!!)

I havent really gotten any answers on my post about the dm not working in the truck. Ive spent about a week reading posts to see if I can find anything to point me in the right direction but to no avail. So what do I do now? I really would like to see what my truck is doing and try tuning it a little, at least sio Im confident that everything is in good working order. I plan on upgrading the turbo, dp, inj., and chip soon so I fig I will def need the dm for all of that too. I just dont know what the next step is. any ideas? :(

Im not familiar with DM, but tyr to be more specific on your problem and maybe I can help. What type of cable do you have? Are you running a USB to serial adapter?- those are the most frequent cause of problems. I bought three different USB-serial cables and NONE of them worked on my laptop. I have an older Compaq laptop that one USB- serial worked on, and it was a Radio Shack cable.
Other than that just make sure you check and recheck all your port settings, and turn off any firewall programs.

It says that the aldl connector is working but could not detect any pcm. I am using a usb to serial adapter. I got the program and cable from detroit turbo and I ordered the usb to serial adapter that someone else on this board said worked great but I still had the same prob.

Just because a USB to serial works great on one computer doesnt mean it will work on yours. On my Compaq, my radio shack cable would work. On my new(er) Dell, no cable works. Ive tried the radio shack, a "Palm" adapter, and an "IO Gear" from Walmart. Its hit or miss with these cables.

I would try to hook it all up to a desktop. Those usually have serial ports, and verify that your software and cable dont have any glitches. Or find someone who has a serial port on a laptop and try it there. When your sure everything works, yet still doesnt work on your laptop I'd say its your USB to serial.

I love my Moates USB - ALDL cable, no adaptors, and it works.

Little more spendy than other cables, but the lack of hassle is worth it for laptops without 9pins.

X2. The belkin cable is the only one listed as compliant in the DM manual. I had the same problems you are having with a radioshack cable. i got a belkin off ebay and its worked fine ever since. just spend the extra 20 bucks and dont worry about it anymore.

Make sure no one repined your aldl plug or loose aldl data wire. You never know. A simple paper clip "check engine" light test would do if its not repined. Check and see if the plugs are poluted with gunk or bent.

My home made Max232 aldl cable works good on my grand prix and GTU. I just have to wait for the computer to detect it after about 40 seconds(too long IMO). Then I use the off set to sync it to the DM program. The other thing is you prob have to update your USB drivers.

i went throught two serial usb adapters before finally seeing the light and just got a belkin, works great.

Make sure you ar probing the correct wires on the ALDL. Your sensor/data wire needs to go to the plug/terminal that has an orange wire coming out the back of it. On my Ty, its the bottom right. The ground is the top right.

thanks for the input ill do the check engine light and buy a belkin if theres no prob with the aldl connector.

When I first got dm, I had the same problem with it not syncing. Isn't there a way to change the pcm number or value in order for the pc to detect it?

I remember doing this and it eventually worked(although it was a tedious process).

I just don't remember how I did it.

I found the belkin on ebay "belkin f5u103" the only prob is I have windows xp and it doesnt say that its compatible with it.

thats what i have it will work, i got mine stating it was for a mac but just go to the belkin website and DL the driver for XP it will work

well I got the belkin adapter downloaded the windows xp version and.......it still doesnt work. datamster is still telling me its not seeing the pcm, and when I installed the software for the belkin adapter it told me there was a problem and it might not work, I uninstalled and installed it 3 times already and its the same thing everytime. I give up

did you change the com ports to a com from 1-4 in the device manager? once the software is installed you should check the com setups and make sure they link up the same, it should work. take a break and try again or try it on a nother computer if you can.

ok so I changed the com port to #7 and it started working, the only other port that it gave an option for was #4 and it didnt work. so now that its working I have a couple of questions:

1. it seems to have a problem keeping a connection, it keeps reading data error, and everything goes red then it starts recording again, it does it really fast and sporatically any fix for this??

2. I dont know how to save the data Im recording so I can post it on the board, how do I do that?

3. when recording runs with the truck to post them what do you guys need me to do with the truck? i.e. 1/4 mile runs, sitting idle, cruising around at normal speeds, running from a cold start or when its warmed up?

bare w/ me im horrible at this technology stuff. Thanks to everyone who helped me get it running and for the advice on getting the Belkin :tup:
