tripodometer question - Pics

What would cause the tripodometer to roll the tenths dial, but not flip the rest of the numbers after it hits 9? If you reset it to read 000.0, it will just read from 000.0, roll around to 000.9 and stay at 000.0 on full revolution.....not goto 001.0

I have the cluster removed (I needed to flip the oil pressure needle anyhow) and even when I manual roll the trip by hand, it still doesnt catch and roll the rest of the numbers. I even took the assembly out of the holder to make sure everything moved freely and popped it back in to make sure it was set down all the way in the carrier.

I found this thread:
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7039&highlight=tripodometer

Even if the motor was fubar, would you still be able to manual turn the gear and get the trip to move?

When I removed the assembly, theres a small line of gears set on a bar behind the dials. This is part of the reset button when you want to set it at 000.0. Im guessing these are the same small gears that the lobe on each number dial hits to turn the next dial?

This isnt my cluster, but it pretty much looks the same, I dont see anything missing on mine:

I'll take some pics of mine while I have it out.....

Re: tripodometer question

Adam i had the the same problem with my first sy and it was that the gear kept poping out and would only catch the tenths numbers. you may have something that is jamed so you might have to pull all of it apart. My problem was the where the shaft sits in the clips they were streched and kept coming out. I would take it apart first and make sure eveything moves smothly.

Welp, I found the prob and yes it has to do with a clearance issue.....and I dont know how to fix it at the moment :(

Ive got pics, but hopefully I can explain this clear...
So the gears behind the dials have a metal girdle between them. Each gear is just barely rubbing up on the girdle so they dont spin freely. When I was rotating the assembly by hand, I saw it kept jumping and wanting to spin...just didnt see why it wouldnt. Now it makes sense...the gear is getting hung up, the dial skips and comes off the gear. The tenths doesnt matter cause it has its own seperate gear which it spins on.

Once I post pics, it'll make sense.

I need to put the bar/gears over to the right. It's spring loaded. Not really sure yet how this is gonna work.....

Re: tripodometer question

yup that is what mine did. but it kept pushing it back out of the clips that hold the shaft in when it would bind up. Never fixed it becasue the truck was totaled 2 months later.

Re: tripodometer question

I get it. I actually just got off the phone with a speedometer repair shop here in town and they pretty much told me there is absolutely no fixing these things other than to replace the cluster. I feel like there has to be some way to do this. When I take mine out to replace the gauges with white face I am going to dig in and see what it would entail. Has anyone else ever tried anything like this? Adam, does it seem like anything could be done to repair all the non working trip sets?

Re: tripodometer question

Alright, so Ive messed around with it a bit with moving around the slide bars that the gears sit on. Seems I got everything to move over a few millimeters and have clearance now. BTW, i removed the whole trip section from the cluster.... its 4-5 hex bolts, easy to do.

Need to put everything back together and hopefully never have to do this again. But it looks like if this is a common prob, I just at least helped with a fix and pictures to boot.

Re: tripodometer question

Odometers/gauges are cake to do. I replaced pretty much all the gauges in my Ty, and lo and behold the odometer I swapped in was messed up too. It rolls when it feels like it, otherwise it'll stick for a while, move a few tenths, then stick again. Trip odometer is fine though. I'm not sure if the odometers are the same as in a regular 1st gen S-truck or any other GM car/truck. Adam, did you install a stop peg for the oil pressure gauge? I thought about it when mine was apart, but didn't have the time.

Re: tripodometer question

Nope, no stop pin install. Probably should since its out, but I'll risk it. Happens again, I'll do it....not that hard to remove the cluster.

Update on the fix I did for the binding of the gears on the girdle... On the spring loaded bar of the setup, one side sits against the long gray plastic button lever arm (for lack of better word for it) that you actually push to reset. Because of this, it was pushing the assembly over and making the gear teeth bind up. Granted, this was the prob on my truck. Not sure if its going to be the same on everyone elses too.

Now... the way the gears are made, there is a portion that does actually touch the girdle at all times....kinda of like flat lobes so that when the dial spins, it stays on the number and doesnt free spin until it gets rotated again by the next lobe of the dial.

The fix I did was to cut a channel in the lever arm so the pin had more clearance and allowed the gears to slightly move over. Seems to have worked so far, I have yet to assemble everything back together.

Re: tripodometer question

Just bolted the cluster all back together. Before I did, I spun the trip manual and all seems to work as it should now, reset button works great.

I'll be damned if you didnt jinx me. That f*#cker flipped again. :rotf: Guess I'll do it again and now install a pin when I get back in the dash to fix some wiring that needs attention.

On a side note, the tripodometer works great  I still need to yank the pics off my cam and post them up.

Re: tripodometer question

You should start a service for it.

fixing trips? nah, pass....the vac kits keep me busy enough ;)

Hopefully my pics will help out....now I gotta find the time to yank them off the cam and get them up.

Re: tripodometer question

I had the same problem on my trucks. Slide the shaft (arrow) to the left, so it doesn't hit what Adam mentioned, and it worked fine for me.

Re: tripodometer question

Werd, that's the fix. Only prob on mine is that I did that, and it wouldnt stay shifted over and kept creeping back and binding again....so thats why I cut the channel in the reset stick thingy. I only recommend my way if you cant get the tension off by just pushing the bar over.
