The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

Thanks Mike.

#2932 has UX1 w/ EQ, so the radio matches the RPO for your truck. Those stickers and dates look like service stickers. The radio could still be the original, but it was repaired in October, 1993 by someone with the initials "AB" ?

There should be a Delco sticker with a date on it. I don't see any date on the Delco sticker in the pic above. Is there another Delco sticker with a date? then you could determine if that radio is original to your truck.

Again, I feel we've established what the UX1 looks like. I'm hoping to hear from some UM6 non-EQ peeps.

Thanks again, Mike.

There was two stickers on the top but no Delco sticker:

The funky thing is, I have an old Delco sticker off my 1988 S10 that had the same radio as you posted above in your 1991 DD. That sticker looks like the one that is on the corner of my radio above... Perhaps they changed the design of the sticker since mine doesn't look like the one that Jimmy posted? The dates here *might* jive since my truck was one of the last ones made. Maybe I got lucky and got a 1992 radio in my 1991 truck . Yeah the labels are consistent with tags that a repair facility would put on. I know the cost to get a factory radio repaired was VERY expensive. Way more than what it would cost to just replace it with an aftermarket one.

I have the EQ. On 1548 too.
Thanks, Steve. #1548 Has UX1, w/ EQ.

The Blazer one is correct.
Thanks, Gary. Appreciate it. You were the first to confirm what a Sy UX1 looks like.

Dave, I have the blazer option and the window sticker says I have an eq radio option and price to reflect it.
OK. #1524 has UX1, w/ EQ. So that makes sense. Thanks.

I knew there were dates manufactured on it. Now you know it isn't original to your truck.

Back in 2006, I had to have the Delco Bose in my Corvette repaired for my NCRS campaign. Mostly the tape transport was fubar. They had a flat-rate fee regardless of what it took to fix. IIRC, it was about $350 for the Corvette. I also had a Typhoon CD unit I had bought with a non-op CD player that I paid $150 for. I guess I felt rich back then, because I gave that to them too at the same time. That one was $300 to fix. So I spent $800 on 2 Delco POS radios in the same month. But in testimonial to the quality of the repairs, both radios are still in service, and fully functional.

Mine came with UM6.
Don't know if this helps. But
I did find these pics in my manual.

The connector on my UX1 radio is different from Mike's.

Like Mike's radio, I have two stickers (dated 2/26/91 and 2/27/91 - a month prior to my build date) and a model/serial number tag. There is also a 4-digit sticker that matches the last digits of the model number. There are no service tags.

I'm betting "weather" is a typo, but where did it come from? What vehicles had weather radio?

This radio is out of my 91 DD pick up. It was built in Shreveport about 2 weeks after #2967 was. The DD has UM6 just like #2967 does. So is this the non-EQ radio used in Syclone with UM6?

My Sy had this cassette it was stock. Sold back in 98

The original radio, still in use, for my Sy, 2129.

It will probably be of little value but here's the radio that came out of my truck:

It has some stickers on the back dated 10/93. So, it must have been replaced by one of the previous owners.

Not to nit-pick, but that radio has the wrong mounting tabs for our trucks, are you sure that's what it's from?

Thanks Jason. I didn't think of looking in the Owners manual. We're on the right track if the radios we think these options represent are the ones in the manual.

Hi V. Thanks for checking-in.
That 2-pin connector is used on pretty much every radio with a vacuum-fluorescent display prior to 1992 model year when the power connector changes in all GM's to a style that has more terminals. With the exception of Typhoon / SoGT which continued to use the 91-style blk, gry, and blue connectors all the way to the end of 93 Typhoon. .

I have no idea where the "weather" thing came from. I've never seen weather in a GM radio. Citizens Band radio, yes, but never weather. It is obviously a mistake.

However: There is another obscured mistake in the description of the UX1 w/EQ. This radio has AM Stereo. It says "Stereo AM/FM" on the second line of the description, but its easy to miss. Perhaps when the text was written, someone pasted the wrong description for the option, and meant to grab "AM Stereo" instead.

Thanks Mel!
And there it is. A UM6 still in the dashboard of the truck it was originally installed in. I verified that #2129 is indeed a UM6 optioned Syclone.

We now have testimonial to what the 2 Syclone radio options look like. Thanks to everyone that participated.

I don't know about 1992, but 1993 Typhoons came with the smaller, integrated into one plug on the back. Syclones came with the three larger ones.

Coolness. I'm sure not going to argue with a guy who's had more GM radios out of trucks than I've ever seen. :D I may be wrong about the year of the changeover to the integrated plug. It may have been 93, not 92 in other s-series. I've worked on a bunch of other S-series trucks, and know that by 93 other S-series had the small plug. I know both my 92 Ty harnesses, and a SoGT harness I acquired from Adam R had the 3-plug configuration used in 91. I assumed (bad idea) that the 93 Typhoon IP harness wasn't changed for 93, that they continued to use the 92 harness for 2,200 units. My 93 Ty is missing the factory connector. The thieves cut it off when they stole the radio. I can't recall having seen a factory 93 Ty IP connector. So you're more than likely correct.

I know I've seen a factory-looking adapter for integrated connector radios to early 3-plug style IP harnesses. Is it possible there was an adapter used for 93 Tys?

EDIT: Here's the adapter, and a CD radio I sold a couple of weeks ago. Very difficult to see the adapter, but it is indeed to adapt the integrated pin radio (shown) to the early 3-plug IP harness. There is an extension of the orange hot wire to the fuse block, an auxiliary fuse, and it plugs into a B+ red power tap on the fuse box. Obviously a factory adapter. I bought this radio and adapter years ago from a board member. I don't remember the year, but it was certainly a Typhoon. I'm sure this is where my thoughts that the 93 Ty continued to use the 3-plug IP harness originated. Even though the radio was the later integrated plug.

Top Syclone
Bottom 93 Typhoon, there is no adaptor
What does the 1992 Typhoon use?

Re: The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

I'm questioning what the 1993 Typhoon harness connectors look like. Not the radios. I know there's a factory adapter to install integrated radios into 3-plug IP harnesses because I had one, and put up a pic. Whether an adapter was used in 93 Tys, I have no idea. You say it was not, and I trust you. I've never seen a 93 Ty IP connector. 3 92's ( all 3-plug style), but no 93's. I guess we'll have to do a survey on Typhoon harness connectors. :D

Here's the two IP Connectors for others that are wondering what the two old dudes are bantering-on about....:

Re: The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

I just sent a PM to Ray Moore asking him to please check what his replacement IP harnesses have for a radio connector. His harnesses are left-over from production, so were most likely used in 93 Typhoons. Let's see what those harnesses have, and we'll continue the discussion.......

Man, you guys are good :). The reason my radio doesn't have that two wire plug in the back is because I "stole" it for use in my aftermarket Pioneer that my buddy gave me out of his Astro van. I used it connect to the 12V constant rather than cutting my harness in my truck. That is one of my BIGGEST gripes when it comes to electrical in cars, people who cut harnesses when adapter plugs are available so that you don't have to :squint:... I even wrote the wire colors on the plug with a sharpie. You can see it in the bottom the pic below:

Yep, 100% certain. I only have two s-series radios laying around. The other one is a "plain jane" one that got the front buttons mashed up when I rolled my '88 S10 DD :(. That funky mounting plate that you see on the bottom of my stock radio is the one that was on the aftermarket Pioneer that I got from my buddy. The correct ones are mounted in these pics after I switched them over. I just bolted that adapter to my stock radio so that I would know what it worked with for safe keeping.

Re: The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

I had no idea two radios were possible (EQ/non-EQ). Interesting.

Or that there was a connector change in 93. So much for buying a 93 ty radio and just plugging it into my truck or vise versa. Interested thread for sure :).
