The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

One of the few changes on my fairly original Syclone #2967 made by previous owners is the radio. It has an aftermarket unit. While I may or may not install a factory radio in it to enhance its as-delivered appearance, I became curious as to what radio it had as original equipment and looked it up on Renz's compnine data compilation. It had UM6, no equalizer. But there's more.... :D

I also learned that there were two cassette radio RPO's for Syclone:

(1772 produced) UX1 RADIO, AM/FM STEREO, WEATHER, CASSETTE, EQUALIZER, ETR, INCLUDES CLOCK STEREO AM/FM W/CASS & EQLZR(UX1)

(1223 Produced) UM6 RADIO, AM/FM STEREO, CASSETTE, ETR, INCLUDES CLOCK STEREO CASSETTE(UM6)

Note the "WEATHER" in the description of UX1. I interpret this to mean there is an ability for the radio to receive the NOAA weather broadcasts in the 162Mhz band. Is this true? If not, any ideas what this notation denotes? Or just an error?

I see that UX1 has an equalizer, and that UM6 does not.

I have two early-90's era equalizer cassette radios in my stash. One has 5 round, black, un-lit knobs for the equalizer bands. The other has 5 oval, black, orange dot of illumination in the center (night) knobs for the 5 bands. Which one of these styles is correct for 1991 Syclone UX1? (Disregarding the "weather" thing for the moment).

Any pics of known-original Syclone radios with the truck number (so I can look up its RPO in the database), or known RPO for the radio are welcome.

Thanks for reading.

I always thought the EQ was standard equipment.

:dunno:

The knobs are unlit on Ty's I know that.

Looking at the RPO descriptions, it doesn't look like the EQ was standard. Cassette was, but not the EQ. And the subject of the thread (for now) is Syclone.

What I really want to know more aboot is the "weather" thing.

I've never seen the WB option on any Syclone I've owned or have been in. If it exists, it's probably rare.

I have the EQ. On 1548 too.

Never seen weather. EQ or no EQ. My window sticker says w/EQ was a $150 option.

Here's a UX1 in a 93 Blazer. Note the 5 EQ knobs are black and have no illumination 'dot'.

I worked at a GMC dealer from 92-95 and never seen an S-series come with lighted eq buttons, those came in the higher value cars. Not positive about the Bravada.
The dealership I worked for didn't sell any Sy/Tys however.

This radio is out of my 91 DD pick up. It was built in Shreveport about 2 weeks after #2967 was. The DD has UM6 just like #2967 does. So is this the non-EQ radio used in Syclone with UM6?

Sy #2364 has same stereo as tan colored Tahoe on post #7. To the best of my knowledge was stock for my truck.

This jostled my memory. Now we have another data-point. I had a 94 Bravada years ago. I still have a file folder for that car, with a SPID printout. It had UX1, and the 5 non-illuminated EQ buttons "Blazer" radio pictured above.

Btw, my truck is a 29k truck that is bone stock. So I would imagine it to be true to its roots.

Interesting. I bought quite a few parts from a Syclone with under 500 miles use in 2010; one of which was the stereo. When it arrived, it did not have the EQ and I was a bit chapped because I thought I got duped. I'll have to check the labels on it to see if it coincides with your findings.

If you want a MINT one, PM me as I doubt I will ever use it

Model change part way through production?

#2364 has UX1. That's w/EQ. And another confirmation of the black button "Blazer" radio.

Thanks for the input.

No. Doesn't look like it at all.

There's two RPO codes for Syclones. One has EQ, one without. Of the last 5 Syclones built, #2991, 92, 94, and 95 had UX1 w/ EQ, but # 2993 had UM6 non-EQ. so both options were installed on the last day of Syclone production.

Even with only a few data points so far, I think we have the UX1 w/ EQ figured out. It looks like the one in the Blazer pic above.

Now for the UM6 non-EQ, and this is done.

Do you happen to know or recall the truck number so we can put the RPO # with the non-EQ radio that came from it?

PS: This database that Renz did is super for this kind of research. Don't have to get peeps to look at their SPID decals. Just look up the optiuons in the .pdf by truck #.

Re: The 2 Syclone Factory Radio Differences?

It will probably be of little value but here's the radio that came out of my truck:

SY_radio_002.sized.jpg

It has some stickers on the back dated 10/93. So, it must have been replaced by one of the previous owners.
