smoke ?

I just picked up my '93 Ty #0710 :D . It has 35ooo miles and definately needs a complete tune-up as she is running a little rough.

I took the intake off(crossover.elbow,box) and found a good bit of oil in it. I cleaned it out and re-installed. I then cranked the truck and noticed that both vent hoses from the cylinder heads were puffing out smoke.....not alot but a little. There is no exhaust smoke while running or after initial cranking. I am going to replace the pcv valves when I tune it up. I drove it 780 miles back home this weekend and it didn’t burn a drop of oil. Also it looks like where the hoses connect to the cylinder heads they are leaking at the connection/base. Do you think this smoke is normal? The boost is not steady and it seems the ign. is a little off too. Again, she needs a tune-up and hopefully will be @100%.

Blow-by. Start it up, pull the oil-fill cap and hold your hand over it. If you can feel it puffing, the motor's gonna need some help. A compression check would be a good idea as well.

The puff of smoke at start up is common (even with low mileage truckss), it need valves seals. It takes a while to do, but its more on inconvience than anything. Its doesn't noticably affect the perfromance the engine.

This is a problem. Do what Dig say by pulling off the oil filler cap, 99% if the engine is pushing air out the valve covers its needs an engine rebuild.

What do you guys know of this place -www.tunetimeperformance.com in NJ. I made an appointment with "Matt". The Ty needs an experienced eye to look at it. I hope she doesn't need pistons/rings but that seems to be the consensus with my smoke probs. Oh well, the rest of the truck looks sooooo showroom nice.........I hope it's a small problem. I am dropping it off next Saturday.

Any chance it could be a head gasket or is blow by always in the bottom end?

no but the action of them moving causes air to move in the covers and will blow out a little smoke.,i am not saying it should puff like a train either.

even if that were true....which i'm not even gonna debate.....there shouldn't be smoke to be moved around to begin with.

just normal heat cycle with hot oil will make a touch of smoke.i would not be to worried about a little bit ,but a lot you may have problems

x3. I just got done with the same thing. In my case it had bad compression on all driver's side and was a blown head gasket. The compression test (or even better, a leakdown test) will tell you what you need to know.

One thing that I have learn over the few years that I have been alive is this.

If there is smoke at all, that is BAD news. Doesn't matter if it's a little or alot when it comes from your engine.

Now time for a story:

I once had to work with this guy who had to install a $25,000.00 relay and he wasn't sure if he did it right, so he said to me,
Let me know if smoke comes out of it, meaning the relay as he energized it.

He close in the breaker to power up the relay and this little cloud of smoke shape like a mushroom comes from the relay :rotf: . I yell to him we got smoke and he replied
damn, there goes another $25,000.

They forced him to retire 1 year later after he burn up a few more relays.
