questions

Hello. I'm trying to get started. I have a '749 ecm from a sunbird. I would like to re-calibrate it to run a 3.1L v-6, turbocharged. the mechanical aspects of the project are nearly complete. The ecm is not installed into the vehicle as of yet, pending warmer weather to work in. I was hoping to have the ecm to a point where I could start and idle the motor. in order to do that, I could use some help in the form of answers to the following questions...

How do I go about wiring the fuel injectors, since there are two more?
I've been through everything I could find so far, but this still eludes me.

secondly, how do I go about using an at29c512 eeprom in place of the 27c128? I have a pocket programmer 2, and I'm reasonably comfortable burning chips. but the 29c512 is a 32 pin device.

I think I'm getting a grasp on the tuning aspects, i.e. blm function, and how to make the changes, and why, and i'm sure it will all seem almost easy once I get my hands into it.

Where can I find the $58 .ecu file?

I have the memcal with a bcc of albk ( which is from an '88 i think) and i can read the .bin to edit. But will simply changing the number of cylinders from 4 to 6 be suffecient, to get the engine started? the displacement per cylinder is pretty close, but the 3.1L has been worked over a little, meaning p&p intake to exhaust, performance cam (that's all the specs I got on it), different pistons, estimated c/r between 8 and 9 to 1.

Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Why not start with a Syclone calibration, already set for 6 cylinders? I'm not that familiar with the 3.1L.....guessing it's port injected? You could use the Syclone wiring diagram for a guide. If it's DIS, that's another story.

I'm sure a 29c512 could be used with some hardware changes, but why not use a 29c256 or a 27c128? Just load the binary in the upper half of a 29c256 chip.

There hasn't been much demand for the $58.ecu. Promgrammer is cheap and has lots of features. I believe TunerPro has a $58.ecu file, but not sure about accuracy. Buy Promgrammer.

HTH,

yes, the 3.1 is mpfi. with a distributor, so that's easy enough.

i already have the 29c512's that's why i wanted to use them.

another question.. if I had 4 seperate calibrations burned onto the same chip, would I have to re-start the engine to switch between them, or could i just switch while idleing?

p.s. I have promgrammer, I was looking for the $58 to use in tunerpro. I'm going to end up having to do several different ecms for the various motors i have lying around.

Thank you for your time.

Another Quick Note. the SyTy wiring harness has an injectors harness for the 6 injectors only. i don't think it would be that expensive to buy it if its available. I assume the sunbird harness has this connector as well.

Hello.

the sunbird harness that i have has 2 loops that are for injectors, a med blue loop at c13 to c15, and an orange loop at d5 to d6, in addition to c10 and c11, each of which control 2 injectors . i'm not sure how to hook into the loops for six injectors, but I know they're for injectors.

as for eeproms, I found this somewhere, incase it's needed...

"With larger chips 27C256 and 27C512 you can instead use 29C256 and 29C512 that we sell. these chips are electrically erased and you don't need a UV eraser (With the 29C512 Connect pins 32,31 and 30 together and let pins 1,2 and 31,32 hang over the socket.)"

I have yet to try this, but it could come in handy.

other than stacking bins, do I burn the bin at the start of the chip or the end, or do I simply use the addressing from the original eeprom?

Thank you for your time.

turbo grand prix ecm

turbo grand prix ecm

That does sound like a good idea. i'll have to start watching the boneyards. i'd still need to tweak the ecm, though, because my setup is not quite stock. I don't know what turbo's the grand prix's came with, my 3.1 has a garrett t3,

besides, I already have the '749. and with my budget, that's reason enough.

Thanks for the tip.

A Turbo Grand Prix has a Garret T-25 turbo .80 A/R intake , .62 A/R exhaust. Its also uses coil packs instead of a distributor, which I think is a big plus.

Do you think it would work to replace each coil pack with 2 ford coils, the type that plug directly onto the srark plug? this would eliminate all of the hassles with spark plug wires. you might need to feed the coil pack signal into a simple amplifier to supply the cuerrent needed to run 2 coils versus one coilpack. this could be as simple as a few transistors and a few resistors, for the v-6 an amp with three sections would be needed.

just a thought.

Thanks for the turbo info.

FYI i went to the ford dealer the other day and asked a parts guy for the springs that go inside the long rubber boots...apparently they dont sell just the springs (no part number)...i wandered into the shop and asked a mechanic if he had any old springs i could have...he ended up giving me a bunch of of complete coil packs that he had replaced on cars they had previously worked on...coil, spring, and rubber boots...he says they replace them alot of times whether they need to be or not...and usually they just throw them away...i ohmed them and they checked out good...the rubber boots are usually what causes arching and missing problems anyway...the replacement boots cost around $6.00...the complete coil pack costs around $90.00...you might check with your local ford dealer and get yourself a handful for little or nothing if you are going to experiment with them...

Excellent!!

maybe if the rubber boots were to be replaced with something more durable, say, teflon, and sealed with o-rings... I'm trying for long term durability. I'll have to check the dealers for some junk coils and look into doing some mods of this sort. cutting off the rubber boot, machining a teflon replacement, somehow sealing the two together, perhaps with epoxy. if the coil could be re-designed as such, you could really throw some current through it, hit the primary with a 300 volt pulse or so, stored in a capacitor, switched with a scr... they'd probably eat spark plugs like crazy.

Thanks!!
