Need some quick feedback, safe to drive?

The Sy is new to me and I'm getting ready to learn more than I probably want to know (upcoming vacuum line replacement, steering shaft install, tune up, reliability mods and then on to the fun stuff...). In the meantime, I have an urgent 3 part question:

1. One of the settings on my A/C went out a couple days ago. I check under the hood today and see this. Is this safe to drive? It looks like a hose goes where the arrow points but there isn't one there!

2. While looking at the "missing hose", I notice dried coolant that looks like it pooled just underneath as shown by the arrow. I believe the Sy had a heater core swap just before I bought it (3000 miles ago). Could this be left over?

3. Then I look at the coolant overflow tank and it's empty (and it's hot!). I never saw any increase on the temp gauge and the truck appears to run pretty good. I can't find a leak anywhere and there is NO puddle or residue on my garage floor. It's spotless.

fitting in pic one goes nowhere. Its not used in the syty's
possible on the heater core. The hose is right there. I would clean it up and keep an eye on it.
I would fill the tank to full line and also keep an eye on it.

You sound like my wife.LOL

I also noticed you have the rubber vac lines. I would replace them with silicone lines when you have the chance.

in my 1st post i'm doing the "upcoming vacuum line replacement", I already have the vacuum lines in the garage from the recent group buy.

They are the original lines on the truck, it's got 30k miles and I just had to swap out the original set of Firestones... it was a sad day for that. :(

Refilling the coolant tank won't automatically refill the rad. Let it sit overnight and check the rad itself and top off, I'd bet it's low. Refill the header tank if necessary as well. Then, as mentioned, keep an eye on things. In a few days check the rad again after an overnight cool-down. If it's low refill and do as before. Check again. If' it's low again you prolly have a leak somewhere.

I'll check it in the morning. I really hope it's not burning coolant somewhere. There is no smoke so I don't think there is a headgasket issue.

What yur looking at in the pic is the heater hose. On second look the clamp looks loose. Better check that.

Are these trucks ever safe to drive?

+1 on checking that heater hose at the bottom of the pic. Looks wet to me.
