My First Mod

Well, finally got my first mod out of the way. I bought an ALDL cable and will be downloading some software as soon as it arrives. I also bought a 3 ton Craftsman floor jack and some jackstands.

The Ty is already up in the air with a broken shift cable (keeping in mind I have had the truck for 3 days). Did some general clean up underneath and it looks like power steering fluid is all over the place.

I checked the resivour (sp) and it is pretty much empty. Looks like a new ZQ8 steering box is in the cards. Oh well, I wanted to upgrade anyway.
Oh, and here is a pic of the truck from yesterday. I love this truck.

And here are some engine pics. Not the cleanest (yet), but it runs well and I will have it ticking away like a sewing machine in no time.

If anyone has suggestions for what needs to be done, I am all ears. I am familiar with LS1s, so this little 4.3 is all new, and I have no background at all with turbos.

First suggestion is to get that power steering leak/issue fixed before you drive that thing again. PS fluid is flammable...im surprised that truck hasnt burned to the ground already.

More suggestions later...its to early in the morn....

Re: My First Mod

I was lucky it all leaked strait down or back on the suspension parts on the drivers side. The exhaust is on the other side so the major heat source is relatively far away. I am already trackig down a new ZQ8 steering box.

You have a really hot manifold near the pump/reso on the driver side too along with a really hot x-over pipe that crosses underneath everything as well.

You wont be able to track down a "new" ZQ8 per say, but if you look on here, we got guys who sell them at a reasonable price. You may want to search on "jeep steering shaft" while you are at it. Both the shaft and box swap will make your truck handle 100x better than stock and rid most of the slop.

So how is your truck controlling boost with the boost solenoid not even hooked up to vac?

You may look into swapping those metal IC lines for 3/4" hose. Instructions and some other helpful info can be found here: www.sytyarchives.com

But cool, the truck stayed in FL (you bought it in Melbourne). We do quite a few meets here (including wrench sessions) and are a very close knit group of friends beyond the trucks. Only bad part is that you are basically in BFE since most of the hardcores are located in Central FL. Make sure you check out our meeting coming up shortly: www.sytyshindig.com/blog or go view the forum for it we have on here.

I just ordered the steering box and the guy who had Ty before me already did the Jeep shaft. I have no idea about the boost, but it seems to hold 15 lbs., if that even means anything. I am a complete noob with turbos and such. While I catch on quick, the learning curve on these trucks seems to be nearly verticle. The ty is not my daily driver, so I can take my time with learning my way around it, hopefully avoiding costly mistakes.
I have been in the archives all day for the last couple day and have spent quite a bit of time researching everything else with Search (which is quite tempermental btw).
And yes, I do live in the middle of nowhere. We refer to it as LA, Lower Alabama. My mullet is coming along nicely and the truck rotting in my driveway really ties the house together with my neighbors doublewides. I will def look into the shindigs. There are a couple guys up here that might be heading that way and I might be able to add my truck to their caravan.

Thanks for the starting points.

Chris
Thanks for the input on the truck.

Re: My First Mod

No offense but you have some ugly "plumbing" coming out of your upper intake:lol:

Ha-seriously some Home Depot parts in there lol :rotf:

Looks like the solenoid is by-passed in favor of a grainger valve. Supposed to be reliable.

Not to sound pessimistic, but become intimately familiar with your floor jack!

Ya, I know. I am thinking about the silicone hose kit one of the vendors on here sells, but I don't really know if it will help this particular issue. I have alot of hose work ahead of me and because of my hose work in the past I am going to work around the kids schedules. I am going to be babystepping my way through this one. I also have to get a high flow IC pump since it still has the stock one and look at doing the metal IC line delete mod. While I have everything apart I think I am just going to go ahead and do the steering box at the same time. I just put the shifter cable in yesterday, but I got the Dormon before I researched it and the fit is less than spectacular. I am going to have to massage it around the HD propshaft. Oh well, live and learn. I have spent alot of time in the archives and have some ideas for what I want to do. Now to get the money together to start all of these projects.

Even the OEM shift cable has to be bent to fit around the HD propshaft. The problem with Dorman shifter cables is that they tend to snap within a year or so.

I try to avoid Dorman products if I can, it seems like all of their products are cheap Chinese junk for a not so cheap price.

If you are remotely *thinking* you might want a kit, I really suggest doing the GP I have going on now. I dont sell the kits 24/7 and only do them in GPs....so I dont always have material on hand to make them at the drop of a dime. It could be months down the road until I do another GP....

worst case, you buy it and dont use it... you can resell it instantly on here to someone who missed out and wants a kit.

Re: My First Mod

The piping that goes from your intake to your brake booster is pretty ugly. They did it for a boost gauge is my guess. I would hit up Rpm (vendor here) and get one of his braided pieces. The work great and look great. oh and another thing, I am not a fan of your wheels.

Ya, give me a little time to get this thing running right then I can start changing out things like the wheels. For right now, they may look like donkey butt, but they roll straight and hold air.
As far as the engine compartment, I have my work cut out for me. I have a list of things to do, but top on my list is getting my tune right and changing out parts that are interfering with tuning. Once I have this thing on some kind of baseline, then I can start changing out parts and then retune. If/when I actually turn the boost up to 25psi, which is what it was at before, I want to ensure everything else is working well so the truck doesn't explode the first time I boost launch.

Keep the info coming though, I want this thing to run like a raped ape, but I want to be able to actually make it to my destination safely. My short list looks like a new steering box, silicone hose kit (stand by for order), replacing metal IC lines and pump, and a heavy duty shift cable. Once I get all that done, I will probably have found more stuff to fix.
The vendors on this site are going to make a mint off of me.

25 lbs of boost. That's a lot, paragraph should sound a little more like this......

If/when I actually turn the boost up to 25psi, which is what it was at before, I want to make sure the truck explode's the first time I boost launch.

I will be able to actually make it to my destination safely, on the back of a tow truck.

Re: My First Mod

I should invest in a car carrier with a winch for my silverado I guess. Only a matter of time at 25 psi.
Oh well, I still have the vette to get around in, and if all else fails I will beg the wife to let me take her G8 to work.
Enough playing around in here though, I need to get back to working on the truck.

Re: My First Mod

Hi sorry, i was just looking in on the new Ty, and I saw something about the ZQ8 steering mod. What year and where could I get one, an auto parts store or search for one.
