lower intake gasket question

Is there a special gasket or turbo designation gasket required?

I have PN MS 95832 is that a correct gasket for syty application?

Reason I ask is I think I could have installed wrong gasket on lower intake to cylinder heads ( l35)

Just looked under hood for first time while I had a minute pulled plug #2 and saw coolant. I believe the water jacket did not seal, dumping coolant right into that port causing the white smoke. Pulled a couple other plugs and they were all dry. So I'm thinking I messed up the lower intake manifold gasket @ the water port/jacket closest to A/C compressor.

Re: lower intake gasket question

Those are stock SyTy gaskets. It's my understanding that L35s use the same gasket. Straight across interchange. There is no special "turbo" gasket. You're gonna have to pull the intakes and see what's going on. Why was the intake off to start with? Heads just installed? Once everything is off and cleaned set the lower intake on the heads without the gaskets. Check that you still have a small gap between the intake and the block.

Re: lower intake gasket question

I defer to Dave but when I took my manifold apart for the first time many years ago those were the gaskets I found. I wondered about the lack of a bridge across the siamesed ports at the time. Now I was not the original owner but when I bought the thing it was completely stock and when I finally did take the lower intake off I could tell it had never been apart before. Just plain to many things appeared factory.

Those gaskets were blown. Here's that old thread, with pics.

Dang, I noticed something different when I pulled it all apart. And I saw those special little reinforcements on the gasket. The alum. index things... I should have saved the gaskets for reference. I had some 4.3 gaskets some type of VR I tossed the package ( most likely LB4) laying around and used them they were brand new.Just dug out some paper work the gasketes were Victor Reinz MS15373. What I find out is later on AFTER getting all back together is the heads are L35.. So most likely have a mismatch. Thanks a bunch for clarification.

I feel like if I did not ask I would be doing it over again and again... and possibly again. and to me its worth a shot to disassemble the top intake once more and give it a shot.

So with the L35 head ports notched and the lower is stock what gasket is the one to go with? I understand there is 4 choices but what one is correct for application using l35 heads and a stock lower intake manifold. Sorry for being so redundant. Looked at a l35 gasket and it does not look like it will fit. Didn't see any notches for the port. I notice the felpro 1202 are very thin around the edges.

Re: lower intake gasket question

Decided to not break the upper portion of the engine down. Thought I was going to be able to be able to since I ordered a set of gaskets yesterday for today and realize I'm making the same mistake.

I'm really not sure what gasket to pick.

Does anyone have any old stuff like the ones I pulled off which daveP described about them being bridged and siamiesed? I

They are close. I didn't think the port of the stock intake and the L35 lined up great, but as the heads were under warranty and my intake is original ,I didn't want to grind on them to make everything perfect. The 1202 would have been close to the edge of the intake on mine and the other ones were centered better on the mating surface.

Re: lower intake gasket question

I have used the felpro 1202 on the stock intake with L35 heads and also with a edelbrock intake. No problems with either. But I did not drive a lit of miles either.

Something to think about. Appreciate the responses.

I understand the 1202 is readily available but wasn't clear on if it would work in my specific application.

Here is what I found just a little bit ago. :banghead: looks like a few mistakes I made on my end with the gasket. I know I installed it wrong.

Severed and not even sealed

What it looked like when I removed Exactly like this

Notches on the gasket, Half moon impressions ( very small on outer edge of gasket) L35 conflict/difference against stock stuff.

Re: lower intake gasket question

I recently used the Felpro 1202 and they seem to be ok - at least so far. (stock LB4 heads)
After I fitted them, I actually came across a pair of NOS GM 14097298 gaskets this side of the pond on fleabay.

As has been already mentioned, the gm gaskets are a 'sandwich' type with a thin aluminum centre and also have silicone screen print on ports. They also have an aluminum heat ring for/around the egr port.
They differ from the Felpro 1202, which are just a composite type that are pretty flexible and probably contain quite a bit of 'rubber' in their composition they too are screen printed around ports.
The 1202's have the L35 central divider on the two siamesed ports, but no raised eyebrow cut out that I recall, but they also have NO egr provision either.

To use the 1202 on stock LB4 heads, you need to cut out the central divide on both siamesed ports, or else risk it becoming foreign material in one of the ports, because it isn't clamped on the LB4's as it is on the L35's.
Also, unless you want to risk a burn through and/or want to retain egr functionality, you will need to cut out for the egr port flow on the R/H head. Not an issue I believe if you are using the L35 heads.

Regarding the egr, I was in two minds here, as whether to try and dig out a stainless steel shield that used to (and maybe still does) come in older style 'universal' sbc gasket sets and cut the gasket to suit. This would probably be a much better solution than the various 3/8" npt plugs that some people use to block off their egr. I have left mine intact, by cutting out for the port, but removed the egr valve and fitted a blanking plate. Thats just my choice at this time.

I did find that the 1202's needed very careful positioning due to the clearance holes in the gasket for the manifold bolts and the fact that the gaskets had less material at the top of the intake ports. It would be easy to get it wrong and have very little gasket material there, which would possibly blow out under higher boost levels. If I remember, I had to trim the ends a touch to get them right. The old GM ones fitted and located just right, with more cross section there, but you would expect that I suppose.

Proper preparation and clean flat surfaces are essential here. I also found that the manifold has large clearances on the bolt holes and its worth a trial fit to determine best fit for port alignment before laying the silicone on the valley (China) walls. Mine originally wasn't, but to be fair 'best fit' on mine seemed to pretty much line up with the centre of the tapped holes. I also use hylomar around water jacket ports. Again, a personal choice. Helps to keep them in place too.
Hope the above helps.

Re: lower intake gasket question

I took Cougar1968 advice and odered a set of gaskets he said he had good results with.today I received my gaskets. The 93346. Looks like there is some type of custom trimming required at the " rear port"??.

Did not think it would be full gasket material but stamped. The other ones I used the first time around had metal pieces that you were supposed to pop out.

I got the gaskets relatively quick. Problem is I'm wondering if I should of just ordered the felpro 1202. I never got conformation on if the "1202" correctly works with l35 heads that's all...

Re: lower intake gasket question

The water ports on that end are not used. I figured one less place to leak. Look at your intake and you will not find a passage.

1202 are the ones a lot of people use for l35 or lb4. I just didn't think they fit as good. It is up to you. They would also need to be cut to make the egr to function properly if that matters to you.

Re: lower intake gasket question

Saw coolant passages on the rear of the heads, so I figured they needed to be opened. Didn't think they were used on the lower intake @ rear.

Pretty sure this last time installing gaskets I messed up and installed the gaskets on the lower first upside down with some rtv to hold it on place. When I put it down against the heads the one side shifted. This next time I think it's a better approach to lay them down on the heads first, than lower the intake down on to that.

Hopefully I get it right this time.

These are properly set up for EGR correct? Thanks!!

Re: lower intake gasket question

I spray light gasket adhesive on the head and gasket. After it tacks up I position the gasket on the head, and the rtv the China rail. The carefully set the upper down.

Thanks for the added input Phil. Going to write all the info down now and keep handy just in case...

I think the ones I ordered will do fine. They appear to be pretty thick.
