Re: Fastest stock turbo?

any you guys got some other suggestions on my runs? im gonna pick up a coil tomorow and see if theres any difference.. also going to pull the upper cooler lines off and see if there pumping or not

Get an ALKY control system http://mysite.verizon.net/res11pgkr/vehicles/tysyclone.html

IIRC, got the parts from OSH.

make a helper spring for the weak wastegate actuator , easy to make, $10.00 to make?

Since you are not going to buy a stiffer wastegate actuator,, this mod helps a good amount.

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

I might give that a shot this weekend....

Edit.. Wouldn't I just be better off running a waste gate on crossover pipe? That should also help with boost control to correct?

Problem with the external on the cross over is that you're really only bleeding exhaust of the drivers side. it works, but it's not optimal. Wastegate porting is your best (and cheapest!) alternative here, until you upgrade to a larger turbo.

The helper spring and stiffer actuator will help some as well. I also suggest Alkycontrol, it does wonders. Took my constant knock from a 2 count to 0.

I won't run into problems porting the stock wastegate with a stock exhaust?

No porting won't cause problems. I ported my turbo exhaust housing it didn't cure my roller coaster boost control, though. To fix it you really need to change boost control parameter in the programming.

An external on the crossover will give much better boost control. I know it not in the ideal position but it do the trick. It's far enough from the driverside cylinders, that area will act more like plenum. The back pressure in our manifold are probably 30-40psi at full boost.

I would not add Alky to fix your high intake temps. It's putting a bandaid on problem and not fixing the root cause.

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

I would use a stock coil. Even if the msd coil is good (it doesn't look good), the additional spark eats (melts) threw cap pretty quickly where it touches the rotor from the additional heat. Our truck already go three cap/rotors as it is.

Do you have any tach flutter? That would be a sign of the coil malfunctioning.

honestly, not that i know of... i already got the new coil in but weather is crappy out and raining so ill have to wait to check it on dm.. im still checking over the whole cooling system right now..

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

the stock pump will just be very low pressure . A good upgrade will be the jabsco or shureflo pump's . most flow something like 7-8 gallons per minute . some have a rating a little higher like 10-15 gpm but are harder to find.
The johnson pumps work well but are a little more $ . search the site . you''ll find many answers to this.

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

the other thing im wondering.. im not sure the pump is on when the truck is on, i know its on when the trucks off/ key on.. and also on the spring for wastegate, do i need to remove the turbo to do this mod??

edit so im sitting here trying to look at the pump but the sticker is so freakin worn off i can barely read it.. all i see is the name jabsco and current draw 1.2amp and fuse size 2 amp.. and it appears to be blue and white..

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

lets see a pick off this pump, and how the hoses are routed. the pump will be running when the engine is running so long as it is hot wired properly .i.e. the yellow wire is spliced into at the pump relay harness and grounded. so if it comes on when key is turned to acc. on the pump is running when engine is running.

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

I just checked with test light when truck is running and the pump is getting power while truck is running.. So that rules that out.. I can try to snap a few pics tomorrow of the line running.. But now it seems the pump might not be up to par anymore, or I got some other problem

I am just suggesting this mod (a helper spring) because it's cheap & easy to do, you say you are not going to purchase an aftermarket actuator, & you do not need to weld a flange on your crossover pipe, new pipeing, new vacuum hose etc, etc. IMO, a external wastegate w/no muffler or not going back into the exhaust system, sounds like A$$. just M.O.

I would suggest getting an electronic boost controller (EBC) it will work on your stock internal wastegate & will work on an external wastegate when you install one latter on.

do i need to remove the turbo to do this mod??
..

No, just drill a small hole on the wastegate actuator bracket (for the spring to hook into)

I would get a thicker spring than what I used IIRC, my spring is .050"-.060" wire thickness?

There might be a drawback to porting your wastegate hole larger, it just might cause the wastegate to open sooner than when the hole was stock size.

I know when I had installed a larger wastegate valve & opened the wastegate hole larger, it caused the wastgate to open sooner, but, that was a much larger valve than stock, so it may not affect yours????

You can open the hole too much on a certain part of the hole & will cause the wastegate valve to stick open,, just saying need to be careful & not go too far enlarging it.

I was not suggesting to cover up your high intake temps by installing a Alky kit, need to fix that first, just a suggestion latter-on, it is really a worth while improvement.

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

Re: Fastest stock turbo?

so i been checking my old logs.. the day i changed the wires, the temp started jumping up... before the wire change my temps from a stop/launch/ and run was from 110 to 165...
then after that they went from 101 to 183... hmmmmmm

btw i been down in garage messing with the cooler system.. if i have the key on, the ground disconnected and the cooler cap off... i touch the ground so pump turns on, run it for probly 30 seconds and take it off, i hear ALOT of gurgling.. then see some bubbles, i turn pump back on and i keep filling appropriately.. Could it be that it was low on coolant and sucked a bunch of air in and thats what im doing right now is trying to get that air out??
