How Do I Get From A to B ?

Ya, it's got a Turbo
"A" being West Virginia - "B" being the US / Canada border.

I'm looking into getting a Sy in WV and bringing it home to Ontario, Canada.
Obvoiusly, I need some form of license plate to be able to drive it back here. According to WV DOT they don't offer "Trip Permits" like they do up here in Ontario. I was told I can get a "one way" permit from the WV State Police but that I would need one for each state I pass through. That's going to be 3 in total.
There must be a simpler way to temporarily license a vehicle?

Suggestions?

The easy way to do it is to put it on a trailer and bring it across.No permits needed.Only auto theft/fire and collision insurance.

You get a transport permit from Ontario. You go to the dmv and get it. When I brought a vehicle up from Pennsylvania that's what I did. I think it was 45.00 or so. You need the vin # a bill of sale with vin#,price, name address and phone # of seller. Go get your vehicle and drive it back with the sticker in the window.

Are you talking about a Trip Permit from the MTO, or is a transport permit something different.
I know you can't get a trip permit without the ownership in hand.

I'll have to look into this Transport permit you speak of wise man...

Since you own the truck( you did pay for it) get them to fed-ex the title and bill of sale,go to the dmv for the temp permit.( in Ontario) Damn why do you guys in Ontario do everything so complicated.

Haven't bought it yet, but if & when I do I'm not paying for it until I see it. There's no way I would buy sight-unseen, so I need to do this all in one 4 day trip.
I do have plates from my old truck that I can put on but I don't know how the "Border People" would feel about that. Once I'm in ON I won't care, I just don't want to upset the wrong people.
And there's nothing complicated about us Ontarians! You "Peggers" on the other hand... :screwy:

At least we don't call the army when we have a blizzard. The way you are doing it, you better hope you don't get into a accident or some bad stuff, your going to be ina lot of legal crap. Even if you get pulled over for a spot check, you have no nisureance and that thing will be on a hook before you can blink.

When I went and got my typhoon way back in the day I just brought a plate with me from another truck and put it on and drove it home.
On the CTS-V I just brought home I just left the california plate on it and drove it home with that.

Oh I'll have insurance & the papers to prove that. The plates I have are reistered to me and are valid so I'm not breaking any laws. I just want to keep it as simple and legit as possible.
I think I'll do what 10secTy did - put the plates on and drive it home. I wouldn't dream of driving it home without insurance, not with my luck!

Do some states register tags to owners instead of vehicles? Here we just leave the tag on the car and it goes to its new home, simple as that. Both of the vehicles I've purchased out of state have been the same way (KS and TX). If you have full coverage on one vehicle your insurance company should cover your new vehicle for like 10 days until you get it insured. I got pulled over in my new truck with a paper tag and no verification, and the cop told me I was fine since the truck was less that 10 days old.

Some Provinces up here are like that, the plate or tag stays with the vehicle throughout its life.
Ontario however is not so you keep your plates. Not sure about WV but that is a good question.
Anyone know? In WV do the plates stay with the vehicle upon sale or do they remain with the owner?
That would certainly simplify my travel plans.

when I bought my Ty in KS, they gave me a 30 day permit. The "DMV" that I spoke with (in the U.S. side) told me "they were legal in every state, and any state could issue them." The 30 day issued in the U.S. are also legal in On. I would try calling someone else like another DMV office, or ask the current owner to look into it for you,....If youre going all the way down to West Verginia to look at the truck... the owner may not mind.

W Virginia has a "One Trip Permit" but it's only available through the State Police. And, is only valid in WV. I was told I'd have to get on for each state I passed through which would be a real PITA!
I think maybe I'll call a different DMV in WV and see if I get a different answer, cause there must be an easier way to keep it legit.

Norm, the permit you are refferring to is a 5 day permit and only applies if the vehicle is already in Ontario and only Ontario.With proof of insurance. It is availablle from any MTO office,They will only issue you one if you have the bill of sale and it has to show the date of purchase within a five day window of applying for the "trip permit".They could be assholes and ask you for a safety and emmissions as well.Ask me how i know..

30 day permits are available from all states you have to go through DMV office.You got bad advice from someone. The permit is valid in Ontario for 30 days. You must have insurance however. If uncertain just trailer the truck back to Canada and have piece of mind.

So there is a Temp. Permit available? I kind of suspected as much. Like I mentioned I was going to call another DMV and see if I got a different answer. Sounds like I will.

What I did 4 years ago, I tried to get a temp permit early on, they said no to me since I didn't have the title/ownership. Then I asked them what can I do, and the DMV said if the truck is still plated in ohio that I can drive it back with that. Being skeptical, I called the 1 800 number for the DMV and they said the same thing. I then called. the seller ask if I could borrow the plates that were on it, (he gave me a letter which he signed saying that I had permission to use the truck, since the truck is officially still in his name) I left him a post dated check for 250bucks, I showed him that I had insurance on it. Drove it home, no problems at all through the border, hell they didn't even cared about the plate. Then once I got home, I overnighted the plates back to him, then put a cancel on the check just in case. After that, went and got my temp plates.... and the rest is like any other canadian vehicle other then getting canadian tire to check on the daytime running lights.

What was the $250 deposit for Rob? Were the plates worth that much to replace?

As for the DRL - I guess you had to go through the RIV, since it was less then 15 years old at the time.
Now, I don't need to worry about the DRL's, I don't need a recall letter and I don't have to pay the RIV any fees. All because it's now over 15 years old.

I'm going to call the WV DMV tomorrow and get a second opinion.

Thanks guys, you've given me quite a few options.
