I got a 30 day temp plate from the DMV in KS. Just need the Bill of Sale, Title and insurance on the car. I drove around Toronto the full 30 days with the temp plate until I got everything done. Passed alot of cops with just the one plate in the back no problems.

Same here, just the museum I purchased my truck from gave me the 30 day tag, and told me it was only worth $3.00. I to drove the truck home without any hassale what so ever. Not crossing the border, or driving it around Barrie at all.

What was the $250 deposit for Rob? Were the plates worth that much to replace?

I left him a deposit on the plate since he doesn't know me from anyone else, so basically its on good faith and a deposit that I would return the plate back to him after I was done with it. Oh yeah, they are now over 15 years old so no RIV for you... Yeah all I had to do was DRL but that was taken off 30 mins after the inspection:rotf:

Problem solved! I bought a truck from South Carolina & they have 30 day permits.
SC DMV will issue one to the current owner on my behalf with the appropriate information.

So, what are your plans? Are you driving down with a trailer and trailering it back?, or are you flying down and driving it back? Just curious, because with the price of gas, you might want to think about getting it trailer up to the border. Factor in your time for the drive and or flying. It might seem like alot to spend around $1000.00 or so for getting it trailered , but time is money and look at all the driving you wouldnt have to do, not to mention if anything goes worng on the road, your stuck. Just something to think about.

Thought about my options; planning on flying down and driving it back. I can get a flight for about 250.00. I won't mind the drive back.
The only risk is if something goes wrong on the way home, but hey, that's what makes my life interesting...

Tough call, I just shipped another one in with a transport company. It was 2100 CAD.
Once I figured in my fuel,gas, time off work, chance of breakdown,etc. I just bit the bullet and had it shipped.

I really would have liked to have gone and picked it up, if you want the "Adventure Option" that would be my choice.

I had mine shipped( not running) from Santa Cruz California to Grand Forks North Dakota, which is around 1900 miles. It cost me $1250 U.S. I figured gas alone to drive there and back would be a grand. For the extra $250 he could bring it to me. Your going from On to S. C which is around 850 miles. Say 20 mpg and gas is $3.25 a gallon( probably more) so go 70 gallons. THere's $250 for that. $250 for the flight your at $500.00 and you still have the 2 days lost, plus the cost of food, maybe a hotel unless you sleep in the sy. I'd look around and see if there's somebody to do it for 600-700 $. Or you can always wait another month till it gets warmer and enjoy a spring cruise.

Maryland issues 30 & 90 day tags for cars that have just been purchased. I'm sure that WV does the same kind of thing. Those tags are good everywhere.

You just need to figure out how to get 30day temp tags (the cardboard ones) in WV (or have the seller do it).

The cardboard tag gets filled out with the VIN number and the issue date. Be sure to use permanent marker, and I've seen people apply clear plastic tape over the plate to make sure it doesn't start coming apart before the 90 days are up.

Just to add some closure to this thread I flew down to SC last weekend and drove the beast back.
I was able to get a SC Trip Tag ahead of time (with the sellers help) so all was legit.
