Good Ty mechanic in Colorado

Hi All,

I just imported Ty 1635 to Parker, CO, and I bought it, knowing it had a few issues. Overall, the think is running well, and looks pretty clean, but I wont be able to register with how rich its running.

I was a little surprised at how many codes I just read doing the paper clip trick
(13 - Oxy sensor, 32 EGR/Open Map, 33 Map sensor cir (low volume), 35 IAC, 42 Spark timing, and 45 - oxy sensor (rich exhaust)

It runs decently, but the exhaust is a bit smoky, and rich smelling, and Its literally dripping water (but the oil doesn't look milky).

This was a recent rebuild with trw pistons, l35 heads and a vortec hp cam, I noticed it looks like it might have had the IC pump hotwire, but the ground wire wasn't attached - re attached that).

I'm a gear head and all, but I'm feeling a little over my head right now for just getting this thing streetable and registered.

Anyone know of a mechanic or shop that might be able to help? or am I at the mercy of this board and trying to figure things out myself.

And yes, I feel a little stupid already for buying out of state sight unseen, but this still seemed better than the ones I saw off craigslist locally.

Check the vaccumm lines. Make sure they are perfect. If not you can get a host of codes and symptoms. Welcome to the club.

i could possibly take a look it for ya this weekend , whatever you do do not take it to an dealership or independent repair shop . you'll just get taken for your loot and the truck wont be right . i suggest reading up on the new owners / members threads . read up on all the info .

TyTilIDie, My name is Chris so I don't think we've talked.

Ziembec, I will do that next thanks. I suspect that one of those codes might be close to the culprit, causing most of the others.

Berzerker, and TyTilIDie, I will gladly compensate you guys in whatever way you like, pizza bear, cash or whatever to lend me your true expertise and help.

Like I said, I'm a car guy, but these are specialized enough trucks that I'm just barely starting to learn the quirks. I'd love to hear your advice and insight. Let me know if I should PM you an Address or any other contact info.

Once I get this thing registered, then you guys can tell me all the proper upgrade paths from there. I know I'm going to have to find a better solution for the radiator and Fans... they are pretty ghetto right now.

I would also be sure that it is running a stock chip. Lots of the other chips dont run well up here...

Aaron,

I will mostly take you up on some parts, depending on Mike's input this weekend. He has graciously offered his expertise and I've learned quite a bit just through a short talk with him (thanks Mike).

We'll be checking out the chip situation then I imagine (stock or not).

There's appears a plethora of unplugged wires here and there, so It'll be interesting to see if anythng is the culprit.

It appears the EGR has been deleted completely, which I'm not sure could be a big cause of the issues... would think that you could only do that with a custom chip or tune. I'll be doing some research obviously.

I checked the vacuum hoses tonight, and though none of them seem worn out, they are definitely not configured stock (due to aftermarket pvcs and air intake and egr delete), so Its hard to tell if they are put together correctly.

Regardless, Looking forward to getting some expert eyes on things this weekend.

Nope, I'm Alex! I'd offer my help but these guys know more than I do, Jeff and Mike I have spoken with a few times, they're good people to work with.

Mike side note im going to give you a call in a few, still interested in working something out for the block...

Don't worry, we'll get it going right. It might take a trip or two but I am confident I can at least figure out some things you might need for the second trip. Looking forward to meeting up with you.

Thanks Graham for the link. I'll have to pick up a bike tire and give that a shot.

Thanks all, and I'll keep the progress posted.

I've already ordered some of the code59 equipment, because I'm 99 percent sure I'll need some tuning. Need to look into the wideband and 3 bar map too shortly.

The wideband is one of the best things you can buy. You can make it simulate the narrowband so dont waste any $ on the stocker...

Interesting findings but it might just be pissin in the wind:

I went a bought a 3-bar map sensor, and also unplugged the ECM just to see if anything looked askew (looked pretty stock to my newb eyes).

I put the 3 bar in and started her up... idle is lower 6-700 rpm and sporatic, even almost stalling, but interestingly, no check engine lights... not sure what that means with the stock chip.

put the 2 bar back in, and idle is smoother, but higher (1100 rpm). check engine light again comes on and off here and there... throwing only one code now though (35- IAC)... Wonder if I should go get a replacement IAC? not sure where they go on these...

Pull the ecm before you do anything else and see what chip is in there. If it is just the blue one with aybm or any of the following it is a stock chip and will be needing the 2 bar. I have an aldl cable that you will need before anything else. I also have a copy of datamaster that will help you out. I even have an older tuning laptop that has this stuff loaded but the battery is pretty crappy. Why dont you call me.

Hahahaha Guys, I may have figured it out. At least the big problem that is.

After seeing the IAC throwing the only code, I went out to figure out where it is, found it, found out it wasn't even tight in place... unscrewed it, and saw that it looked pretty new, but it was fully extended, pushed it back into the housing, re screwed it in a bit tighter, re - plugged it in and walah... no more codes or check engine, idling at a normal rate, and no more smoke or rich running. That IAC was probably starving this thing of air...

Drove it around the block, still no check engine light.

Still idling a little rough and it seems a bit anemic on a launch (not knowing what I'm doing), so I'm sure a good tune and some other pointers will be good.

Sounds good!

Do you have a new BRASS cap and rotor? Dont use one of the aluminum ones,

And get it straightend out before boos launching it!
