what would i need to run a 412 cam on a basically stock rebuild not looking for excessive power but would like a little gain and reliability

would the 412 be the correct cam to go with

also would the 412 for sale through RPM work with a non-roller setup

Re: cam question

If you wnat a little more power Ild leave the cam alone unless youre going to have the motor out. Otherwise, I'ld just turn up the boost.

yepper, 412 is as close to stock as you can get.

Re: cam question

The 412 is a long ways from being close to the stock cam. The stock cam is a 179*/191* duration, .351/.386" lift. The 412 is a 206/210 .500/.500 if my memory is correct (double check me if you've got doubts, www.compcams.com lists the specs.)

To run it on a stock motor you would need to verify clearance for the extra ~.150" lift and probably require some machine work. Probably different valve springs and possibly rockers.

The biggest trade off is, any time you run an aftermarket cam, you throw the engine's airflow off enough that the truck is likely to require a custom tune to run right. If you just want to keep things simple, stick with the stock cam. As an alternative option, Crane makes a real mild cam that's halfway between the stock and Comp 412. The stock Syclone cam really DOES suck but you can make power with or without it.

Re: cam question

I've got a custom grind cam for stockish heads and turbo that I'd let go.
It's a .480 lift, and like 210 on the exhaust and 205-ish on the intake. It's timed for a higher backpressure turbo (like a stocker).

Brand new, never been run. Installed it, but then took it out when I got a different set of heads.

Asking $250, shipped to your door. (Provided your door isn't overseas)

I'll PM ya the full specs when I get home tonight... maybe snap a pic or two.
(Looks pretty much like any other cam, though)

Re: cam question

also will any 4.3 camshaft work on these motors or does it need to be turbo specific

Re: cam question

doesn't have to be turbo specific, the 412, 415, etc aren't turbo specific cams. i believe the sogt had the biggest stock cam for a 4.3 though.

Re: cam question

Turbo specific. Doesn't need to be. It it was, would it run stronger - yes. Someone could go on for days about cams. For your case, this is my opinion. Let someone know exactly what your cylinder heads are and what they will be before you choose a cam. No sense of having a camshaft that heads cannot keep up with and vise-versa.

Many years ago when there was a big discussion about our trucks not running the MPH compared to the E.T. I made a statement that I have better flow in my urine stream than do our stock cylinder heads. The poor flow #'s lead to poor performance on the top end. Since you will have the heads off, why not go for an upgrade and then choose a better cam.

If you stay with the stock heads, Dig is not steering you wrong.

Re: cam question

Have to be more specific on your headwork. Stock valves, swirls, oe size or larger, port work, bowl work, short side radius work ect... Right now I am liking the extra lift with Digs cam. High boost with a stock turbo has high compression temps and the extra lift will help with exhaust flow. The durations may be close but the timing may be more desireable with Digs cam based on his comment.

Re: cam question

if you can do most of the work yourself you could put a set of vortecs on there pretty cheap while you got it apart.
