Got it back from my buddy who added some material to the top side of the ports. Gonna plan on porting it here later in the week hopefully.. Its nice being friends who can weld so good. He didn't have to test weld at all on this. And took him 10 min's to do. I'll go throw it on the motor later today and take a pic to show you how much we actually took off compared to what we started with and post it tonight/tomorrow.

are you going to mill that gasket face smooth? It looks like it dips down a little bit on the left of the bottom pic, and might need a little material added to it before surfacing flat.

I see what your saying Mike, I think its the angle of the pic that looks like its lower, or the color difference between the weld. Because he built up over the flange surface so it it wouldn't have any problems after porting with it having a small gap per say. But yes, I'm going to make it flush. :tup: This pic shows it better.

Here's a few I just took. Shows how it sits on the heads really good now. How I have to take a little off the valve cover to make it clear just that little bit(which I think I put it on wrong lol, either way it still shows the same). And how deep we actually had to go into that lip on the head, and the valve cover hole in the head we cut into. Which I don't think will be a problem.

Get to porting later in the weekend or possibly next week depending on how busy I am, and I'll update again.

You can angle back the lip on the intake. There should be be plenty of material. Or even notch it to clear the covers. I have seen it both ways. I would keep all the valve cover flange intact if possible, because you may have to notch the inside of the valve cover gasket to clear the push rods. If you take some off of the out side of the cover your gasket may been getting very thin at the push rod areas.

what is the casting # of your bowtie heads? I have a line on 2 sets of 10134359's. they don't appear to have that small lip at the top of the head (above the intake matting surface). I would really like to pick them up but don't want to go though this much of a hassle to get them to work. Are they any worth while performance gains of these over vortecs? It seems they run the same valve sizes, and it list the combustion chamber as 46cc? That seems small to me. Here are some pics i snagged today:

do some research before buying them. You will need 18* headers, The bowls in the heads need to be made bigger for less compression. A custom set of slugs will need to be made with a 30 cc dish. You will need to run jesel shaft rockers as well as a hard to find intake or expensive custom sheet metal intake. It adds up.

I've been researching tonight, thanks for the heads up. It would take way to much to make them work for negligable gains. I think i'm going to pass on them, but if anyone else is interested in a set let me know.

John will have to chime in here and give more info on them for you. I wouldn't think considering that you don't have that lip that a intake would fit a whole lot better then mine did lol. Adam I can give you the number of the main guy from champion that did the porting on mine. He does an awesome job. And can make them a little bigger cc.

I think it depends on the cast of the head based on how well you can make it flow. Mine arnt exactly the most flowing but are at 280/208cfm (I/e). but it should be plenty for my goals.

They are the -359 head which is the Bowtie 18* head. I can tell by the way the intake valve protrudes past the deck surface that these heads have been milled down. The small 46cc chamber also indicates that, as the chamber should be in the 54-56cc range. I would estimate that there is a good .100 off of the deck which makes it less desireable for a boosted motor. A 46cc chamber would also reguire a 40cc dish for a 8.5 CR, which may not even be possible to make. I run a 56cc chamber with a 30cc dish for a 9.0 CR

I would pass on them unless you can buy them cheap. The jesel rocker mounts are worth $250-$300. Other than that you have a lot of work and cost to be able to use them correctly.

They can flow 340cc plus. Need a big turbo or high rpms.,, or both.

Here is a couple ways to fix your valve cover situation.

I notched mine to same height and angle as the valve cover rails allowing room without having to modifiy the cover.

A common way I have seen them done is shaving the side of the intake to clear the cover.

Either way be sure to check the intake wall thickness so you don't run into trouble. There should be plenty of wall to work with. Also realize that any portion of your intake that is above the flat mating surface on the head isn't doing any sealing anyway. So there is material to remove.
