Re: Best OIL

what i'm wondering is that i hear you can run synthetic for 5k in a regular car but only 3k in a turbo application. Is that BS as well? or can you run synthetic 5k in syty too?

My wifes Toyota Sienna goes 10k between oil/filter changes. Toyota spec's synthetic 0W20 for oil changes (6.4qts!!!!!)

Re: Best OIL

Eeeeeerrrrr wrong they are not paraffin based oils. Do you think that if they put wax in Pennzoil they would have a lot of lawsuits on their hands. All oil must meet the same standards set by API /American Petroleum Institute. I have this discussion all the time with silly people who think they put paraffin wax in theyer oil. Read up on oil before you post. Think about it if they did they wouldn't be around still if they did that. C'mon throws don't believe everything you read ! Not trying to start an argument.

The old myth that Pennzoil - Quaker State oil is "paraffin" based oil is because crude oil from Pennsylvania is a high paraffin based crude oil. stocks. In the 1930s, Pennzoil was paraffin based crude from the Pennsylvania oil fields but now crude oil comes from all over the world. The Pennzoil - Quaker State Oil Company has been defending them self about that myth for 40 years.or since they started buying cheaper light crude oil stocks from all over the world..

I use Valvoline 10W-30 All Season. I switched from Gulf Pride Single G in 1964. Gulf Pride with high detergent and dispersant chemistry would really keep a engine clean of ash and varnish build up. Valvoline has a higher flash point with high detergent and dispersant additives plus Valvoline has high percentage of dimethylsilicone anti-foaming (aeration) agent than other high performance engine oil.

Brad Penn

In addition to our unique base oil cut, increased concentration of “zinc” (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate a.k.a. ZDDP) provides outstanding anti-wear/anti-scuffing protection for engines employing either ‘flat tappet’ or roller cams. BRAD PENN® Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils have been evaluated by a number of premiere camshaft manufacturers with tremendous success. Many are now recommending our Penn Grade 1® High Performance Oils to provide outstanding protection for their ‘flat tappet’ or roller cams.

ZDDP is slowly being removed from oil.

Quaker State Ultra duty... more of a Full Synthetic than Mobil 1 (in most viscosities) and is fairly cheap at Walmart.

I pretty much avoid anything by Pennzoil or Mobil.

Unless I'm missing something, since 1998, those two companies have been one in the same, so this statement doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

When I'm dead and gone, I could care less what my kids use in their cars. But as long as I'm here, they will use PENNZOIL.

Man, am I glad I'm not your kid! Have I ever had an issue with Pennzoil? No. Because I have never and will never use it. I'm a pretty firm believer in not making judgment until I know something absolutely first hand, but this one isn't worth the risk. I don't anymore, but for years I ran an under car/under hood warehouse distributor, and I know what I've heard from my customers for all those years. Maybe all this shit is cleared up now, but stuff sticks with you. Why are Champion spark plugs thought of by some as only good for lawn mowers and weed eaters? Because of a bad reputation they had for a few years that stuck with a lot of people.

To each his own, but I'd take Pennzoil and Quaker State off my list if I were you.

Stay away from pennzoil... Seen what it can do to a few motors non syty related though although I remember someone way back may have been myclone but some posted the end results with running the junk.

That's the post I immediately thought of when reading this thread.

Pennzoil and Fram oil filters together form the Axis of Evil.

It seems like when you read about issues with oil, they generally seem to revolve around Pennzoil or Quaker State and with oil filters it's Fram. Doesn't make me want to buy any of their products.

Over at the BITOG forums (www.bobistheoilguy.com), Quaker State Ultimate Durability (aka: QSUD). It seems to have some of the most kudos, and it's price/performance seems to be one of the highest.

As far as Pennzoil/Quaker State being under the same umbrella, I wasn't aware of that... .but when your Dad works as a mechanic and says "avoid that shit", you tend to listen. ;)

Agreed! I've heard from far too many people in the business to not listen. Maybe they're all very similar now, but I'm not risking anything I own. I still don't use Champion spark plugs either, and I know any issues were fixed when Federal-Mogul took them over. Stuff just gets stuck in your mind.

I thought that Pennzoil and Quaker State were the same now but I couldn't remember and I didn't want to spread misinformation. I do agree with the statement about Champion spark plugs. I am sure they make a great product now but I only put them in small engines. I don't know why. If I remember correctly I believe Champion is factory for Chrysler products but I have been out of the parts sale world for a bit so I am rusty.
