Belt tensioner question

First off, Happy New Year everyone.

The past weeks My typhoon developed a noise durning stop light idle. Would sound horrible and rattle. I would pop the hood and look/listen and all I could see was the alternator making a vibration noise. I thought the bearing inside the alternator could have went.

I was probing around the belt and noticed irregular wear on the back side of the belt. (back half really) The other day I was tugging around on the actual black belt tensioner and it was very wobbly feeling. I could move it back and fourth and realize that is the noise most likely. the bearing has failed there and is creating the ugly noise.

I was looking for a replacement and found one but does not look like the original type. Anyone know the correct PN ? this "says" it is for the Syclone/Typhoon but sure looks different. Other than that the truck is like 99%.

Code what?
The pulley itself can be replaced on the belt tensioner. The gates tensioner that is $50-$60 comes with a Chinese bearing lacking grease packing. All your paying for is the Canada made aluminum housing. If the tension on your spring is good than get a replacement pulley. I always peel off the bearing covers and pack some bearing grease in there and pop the covers back in. The pulley will have some play but should not be excessive. I'd listen to the alternator with a mechanic stethoscope and verify the bearing is not going out.

Re: Belt tensioner question

Yes I am just after the pulley. I guess it can be sourced elsewhere non gm. I don't need the whole aluminium housing just the little black wheel that dangle below the tensioner.

Pretty sure its not the alternator. I do have another one I could pop on but something tells me the idler pulley or whatever its called has expired.

Some one once told me you should replace the serpentine belt along with the pulley. I guess I did not listen and skipped that step.

Re: Belt tensioner question

There's two pulleys, tensioner and idler. If one is bad the other is not far behind. Change them both. I think the tensioner pulley bolt is LH thread.
