Bad vibration at higher rpm

Re: Bad vibration at higher rpm

Dear Diary,

I stopped by the speed shop today and got a fuel pressure guage. It's a small little thing that goes right onto the fuel rail. I felt a lot better spending only $20 on this instead of the $50 stuff at the parts store. This will be perfect for testing static fuel pressure and I can take it off after the test.

It was a bit of a drive out to that parts store which gave me time to try and think outside of the box. After all this sputtering, it seems like the motor is down a cylinder. Mabey it really is. Is it possible that mabey one of the injectors is messed up and it somehow locks up under higher fuel pressures or higher rpm...only one injector not squirting fuel only under heavier pressures or higher rpm's? This would explain both the sputtering and the weird way it runs right after wards mabey. If it was ignition, I would think that the whole chug chug thing wouldn't just clear up on it's own like it does.

Then I started thinking more. Remember what started all of this. The head gasket got burnt through on a a fire ring in cylinder # 5. Mabey that's the bad injector. But how do I test that?!? I think I'll pull that plug and see if it has anything to say before doing that fuel pressure test. The injectors.....the only thing I can think of there is replace them.

But the next few days are going to be used for packing for my upcoming vacation. So I probably won't be able to mess with this until the week after next.

Yeah, I know that one is a long shot but I'm running out of ideas. I'll be sure to write back in you to let you know how those ideas pan out.

Sell it? It's hard enough to give away a running truck. Besides, at this point I feel the need to teach this thing who is boss.

How does one go about testing injectors. When I started searching under this idea I found a lot of folks talking about weak injectors, sides of pistons getting burned, etc.

I't wouldn't be too hard to pull the upper and pull them out. But I don't know what to do with them from there. Or is the age and mileage on them reason for concern to not even try messing with them and just replace them if need be?

Has anyone had an injector problem with symptoms such as mine?

Are these injectors the same style as is used in the Mustang 5.0's and Chevy 5.7's? I understand that they are 30lb injectors. But could you say get a set of 30 lbs advertised for a Mustang and they would work in these trucks?

Re: Bad vibration at higher rpm

The injectors run at a full 12 volt pop? I would have thought that the voltage/amperage would be less than normal operating voltage. One wire to gound and the other to say the positive post on the battery? But DaveP, it's obvious that you know what you are talking about, just making sure I am crystal clear in my understanding. It sounds easy enough except holding a live fuel rail with injectors spraying at full tilt might be a little disconcerting.

I am going to try and at least get the plug out of #5 and mabey a neighboring cylinder before I leave on vacation. That old head gasket is really eatin at the back of my head and is going to drive me nuts the entire week I am gone.

And I have been searching injectors for several hours now. That search function gets me in trouble.

Now I have been reading a lot about people putting in larger injectors like 36 lb on the stock electronics/tune with absolutely no problems. I'm wondering if this might be a good idea for me to get a little extra fuel in there to compensate for the L35 heads. Does anyone have any opinion/expierence on that one? Like mabey I should go that route for this reason and not even mess with the stockers? I'm not looking for faster, I'm looking for it's not going to melt down on me if I find the need to stand on it once in a blue moon.

Plug #1

Plug #5 This plug had a burn mark on only one side too. I just got the wrong side of the plug in the pic.

Plug #4 And the burn mark on this one is the most significant of the 3.

What do you guys make of these? Especially the burn marks on the porcelin on only small areas. I don't believe that I have ever seen anything like that before. Nothing about #5, my suspect, seems much different. Mabey the electrode strap color is a little different and it doesn't have what ever that scaly build up is on it.

I only pulled these three, "easy to get to" plugs tonight. The rest will probably have to wait until after vacation.

To me, this looks like everything is going lean.

I probably should have pulled the plugs first huh? Diagnostics 101. Well, that's what I get for assuming. It seems obvious to me now that this thing is running as lean as hell! I have replaced the fuel system so my deductive reasoning is telling me that these new L35 heads don't jive with the stock system.

Or am I going in the wrong direction here? If you guys think there is more for me to explore aside from tunig please say so. If not, I'll start a new thread in tuning since this seems to be heading that way.
