it makes noise when its stopped (and in gear). and gets louder as RPMs go up. the rythm is the same though. and it only makes noises when its in gear (drive or reverse).
i'm gonna go for a drive tonight and see if i can pinpoint it.
it ran fine all day Sunday. last night i re-routed my PCV, then took the truck out, and the noise started.
it sounds like its coming from the converter.
edited: I tried making a video last night, but the truck is too loud, and the noise is too soft to hear it.

I know this sounds random but check your power steering fluid. My truck did the same thing this year. All of the sudden I was getting some whine from the truck but only in gear. I flushed the PS fluid twice and it is now gone. It just happened to me all of a sudden like your truck. The stuff that came out was almost black and smelled horrible. Now its clear again and working fine. Just a shot. I was trying it hoping I didn't have any TC whine like some people experience

so your power steering made noises, but only when it was in gear.
i've heard a loud power steering system, and this sounds a little similar, but not the same. BTW, the PS pump and reservoir are new (remanuf.) and the box is a ZQ8.
i'll check fluid when i get home.

had it up on a lift. and yeah, its the converter. i figure if its gonna get worse, then right now is the best its gonna be. So beat on it now, and if it holds, it'll hold till winter. If it breaks, then i'll park it and get a Hughes this winter. The noise doesnt get louder with RPMs, but it does seem to go away past the stall rpm.
So with that mindset, i did a nice launch at 10psi 3400rpms. the tires burnt for about 55 feet. but it stayed in 1 lane, and i was able to hold it straight. BTW, stock brakes held the 10psi solid, no Neutral pump or anything. (stock booster, and rear drums). again, i got a rear disc conversion on the shelf next to the alky kit.

That's where I got mine from:
"3K stall TC w/lock up part #HP2230L $412.75 on 10/03 through paceparts.com list price is $956.37. The mounting pads on this TC need to be drilled with a 7/16" drill to accept three grade eight 7/16" X 14 bolts one inch long. The nut goes the motor side and gets 262 (red) LocTite."
Summit sold them also at the time but, it was a special order item so they didn't stock it.

looking through now. if i go with Hughes it'll be the 22-35L, 3500 lockup. Pace has it for $519, Summit for $584. and Summit is out of them till 9/12
also looking at the Power Raptor. Performance Auto & Trans has it for $560. they dont carry anything over 3200 in stock, so it would be a special order.

about an hour till the shop opens. try and get a refund, and give them the converter.
is there any kinda limit on how many times you can rebuild a converter? if its a matter of bad bearings. i'll have him rebuild it again (under the shop warranty) and try it again. i'm just not sure how much damage is done, and how much of an overhaul is needed.

Talked to the shop. He'll work with me to fix it. He has a torque converter dyno in his shop. It cost extra to dyno a converter, so he didnt dyno mine. But this time he will (for free of course). I told him the noise its making and his diagnosis is. 80% sure is a fluid "shearing" noise. He said that the manufacturer (TCS) used a high-stall pump, and to achieve a lower stall, the fins were bent on the pump. He said there was so much welding done on the pump side, that to try and rebuild the pump would've been timely and costly, and require extremely precise work. He did maintain precise tolerances when rebuilding mine though. Anyways, to achieve the high stall i wanted, he put in a different style stator. Now his diagnosis is that the fluid coming from the fins to the stator is entering at such an angle that the fluid has alot of deflection, and makes a shearing noise. He said that some early FWD GM converters did the same thing. He said if it was a bearing noise, i would've heard it in Park/Neutral. Besides, the bearings are brand new.
Anyways, i'll pull it out, and he'll dyno it to try and recreate the noise. If it is fluid, he'll run a different style stator to quiet it down.

he said if it is a fluid noise. it will whine all the time, but never cause damage. If its a mechanical noise, I would hear something grinding, or a metal-metal noise.
i'll drop the pan tonight, and check for shavings. if its clean. i'll deal with the noise for a month until winter. then send it back to the shop.
