Wont start after drive (warmed up)...

Ok so i know that i have had this problem twice now. and i believe syclone#2960 (Bruce). So heres the scoop, after driving say 20 minutes so the engine is good and warm. I stopped to get a part for my Ford at the local parts store, i was in there for no more than 10 minutes and when i come out the truck turns over but will not start. it sounds to me like its not getting fire but it was getting fire all the way to the dist. cap. i let it set for a few minutes then tried it a again and it sputtered then died and would not restart. I had the tow driver (yes i had to have it towed home) turn the key over so i could here if the fuel pump was working and it was. I let it set for a few days, checked all the fuses and they are all good. I charged the battery back up and it fired right up over and over again without fail. on the day it wouldnt start it was dry outside. im thinking possibly the ignition module or ignition relay? this happened a few months back but after sitting for 1/2 an hour it fired right up..i guess you could say it acts like it is flooded.

I've had this same exact problem multiple times with my truck! I have to hold it WOT while cranking to get it to start and then when it did it ran like sh*t until I turned it off and let it sit. Do you have DataMaster? If you do hook it up to the truck while you're trying to get it started, while cranking!

When my truck runs into this issue the RPMs jump up 6300 (on DM) not the tach, and the injectors jump to 96 percent and it actually floods the truck! I'm curious if you have the same issue going on, I've chased mine and never figured it out. I recently made a bunch of major changes to chase another issue so I don't know if I will still haver the problem.

Have you tried holding it WOT while cranking? That puts the ECM into "flood mode" and my truck started most times after doing this a few times I had to walk away for a half hour or so and when I came back it started like nothing happened

yea i tried the WOT and the tach also jumped like that...do you remember what it was that you changed?

this is exactly what it did. I do have DM and will run it in the truck for a while and see if it repeats. i checked the fuel at the rail and it sprayed out into a rag i had with me.

ign module or pickup coil in the dist. get a reman dist and be done with it.

on the ignition module is there something special to install...when i put the last one in i didnt use any dielectric grease or anything like that. Does it need the grease to help insulate for heat?

I had the same problem with a weak battery (and CDI ignition) before.

i have replaced the distributor less than a year ago. with a new module. i do have another ign. module in the tool box.

Where'd you get the dist from? Almost all parts stores have a lifetime warranty on them (or at least we did).

advance auto parts....you think its maybe the dist.? or the module? obviously im going to replace the module first. The distributor is just as easy to remove.

If it's under warranty and you replace the module they can *sometimes* deny the warranty. I'd pull the dist, swap it, and then you've got a new p/u coil, module, and dist.

Re: Wont start after drive (warmed up)...

I never found the route cause of mine, but I can tell you it wasn't the ECM, ign module, and Dist in my case. Changed all that and the problem was still there. I did find that a weak cranking battery added to the problem but that wasn't the cause of it.

Do you have a FP gauge on the truck? Check things like the obvious, leaking down FP maybe an injector leaking? That wasn't the case with my truck but that could do it as well. What injectors/chip are you running? Let's find the common ground between our 2 trucks. My issue was/is identical to yours. I literally put truck back together last night after making major changes so I'm not sure if I solved mine yet.

Re: Wont start after drive (warmed up)...

i'll see how much the pressure drops on the guage overnight...or does it need to set longer? I have 50# injectors and a custom chip....i dont remember if Waller burned it or if it was Hood...

Stock motor
stock cam
crane 1.6 rockers
50# inj.
MSD Digital 6 ignition
MSD HVCII coil
Taylor wires
NGK ur5's
Waller T57 hybrid
Alky control system
9/11 2800 stall

You don't have to check pressure drop overnight. Check it after like 20 mins, if there is a problem that's when it would show up.

If you want my honest opinion I think the problem is with the 50#ers! Mine did all kinds of crazy shit when they got warm. Truck ran like crap, idled rough, hard starts, lean spots through the RPM range, once it warmed up. I just took them out and put siemens 63#ers in and the truck was flawless. I chased headaches with 50's for 4 years! I was waiting for you to say it had 50's but I already assumed based on what's going on.

That's exactly what I did but I didn't upgrade the injectors right away. Probably 60 percent of the people on here will tell you the 50s are junk! I battled a LOT of headaches with them fror a LONG time and everything seemed to go away when those injectors did...

Re: Wont start after drive (warmed up)...

yea it feels like it runs fat when first started..but the WB shows around 15-16 when idling. who makes the best 60's and how much is a set?
