Winter mods

Re: Winter mods

Waiting on exhaust parts and want to pass smog first anyway. I connected the frame pads to the engine pads by slipping a 7/16 bolt through the mounts so the frame pad was "hanging" on the eng pad. (Motor on a jack.) Let it down a bit so frame pad is touching the frame but I can still move it. Install and tighten the frame pad bolts then let engine down and tighten 7/16 bolt.

Well finally, it's back on the road, drove it today. Nice to be back in the Sy. Didn't really notice any roughness with the solid mounts. All seems OK. I have the orig 190 t-stat in it right now in hopes that will help it pass smog. (Failed idle on previous test. We'll see.) First racing date is 3 1/2 weeks away.

Make sure you disconnect the IC pump. That should help as well.

Already done. Thanks! On the last check it had a bit of a miss at idle which we all assume was the problem. New plugs are in for this trip and it's idleing noticeably smoother so "news at 11:00" as they say...

Re: Winter mods

:rotf: Don't we wish. I'm lucky in that my smog guy if very knowledgeable about Sy's. He owns a beautiful GN. I can get by on maybe a detail or 2 on the visual but the truck still has to pass. Fingers crossed.

Re: Winter mods

Truck refuses to pass idle. Great guy though, "pre-checked it" no charge. We think it's the CAT, there's no temp rise through the thing, a temp loss actually. I have a new 3" cat. Waiting on the 3" DP but then I'll have to mod the turbo, bla bla. Thinking I might just have the cat installed temp, no muf, quick muffler shop 3" cat back and see what happens. Registration expires on the 28th, don't want to extend if I don't have to.

Comments??

TIA

Re: Winter mods

Have an adapter made to mount the 3" cat. temporarily. It doesn't need to be welded on to be legal. Just clamp it on.
Dumped oil & filter, fill with fresh synthetic yet?

Re: Winter mods

Fresh synth is in, was since it went back together. Can't just keep going back to the smog guy, wear out my welcome. Think I'll do the temp cat install and see what happens. I've checked and after this is over I'm gonna change my address for the truck to a location (my cousin) outside of the smog check area. To late for this check though.

Re: Winter mods

Yep, I'm going to do that address change as well. Luckily there are a few counties left that only smog on transfer of title.;)

Re: Winter mods

Well it boils down to the fact that the cat outlet temp is cooler that its inlet. Not good. I'm going in to install the high flow cat as mentioned.

I have to do that too.

Re: Winter mods

Had the high flow cat installed today. So now I've got a 2 1/2 DP, 3" cat, and 3" muffler shop (non mandrel) tail pipe, no muffler, exiting in front of the right rear. Sounds kind nice actually. Anyway, back to smog guy (very patient, manual mode, no charge:tup: ) and the idle is now OK UNTILL it misses. Which it does just enough to not pass. Next step: pull the plugs and re-gap to something big like .35+ just to pass. If this doesn't help I have an appointment with a guy with a scope next Wed. The saga continues.

BTW The gal who made my appointment for the scope says they just had a Bay Area Sy in last week. Who might that be? Company is RPM in Rohnert Park. (North of San Francisco for the non Ca folks.)

It's just a six

Exactly, that is why if you retard your timeing a few degrees it could greatly increase the exhaust gas temps. :2cents:

But you also need to get rid of that miss.
What do you have your fuel pressure set to?

Re: Winter mods

Sy was not me.LOL I do know a guy with a Sy that is not on this forum and he lives in foster city. Could be him.

I think If I remember correctly, Don is running 2 deg. of retard like I was.

Re: Winter mods

Yup. 2* retard. I'm far from a expert here but it seems that the cat is now doing it's job. Gotta tackle the miss next. Interestingly, it -seems- to idle better in gear than in neutral. My guess is it's getting slightly more manifold pressure with a bit more fuel so the cyl is filling just a bit more so if fires easier. I'll re-gap the plugs this weekend and see what happens. Makes me want to run out and buy an MSD 6 with it's multiple spark.
