Winter mods

Starting work on the dreaded motor mounts. From what I've read the exhaust manifold has to come off to do the mount. I've seen this link:

http://www.nwstp.com/oldsite/jeff/mountstech.htm

Anything else you can throw at me will be appreciated.

Also 3" DP on order so turbo will be off for that. Thinking I'll just pull the entire exhaust...

Hints, prayers, whatever:)

TIA

Re: Winter mods

I just pulled my motor out yesturday and i had nothing left of my polyurithan mounts. USE THE HEAT SHEILDS if your not using solid mounts.

Take thew cross over off, it makes it that much easier.

Re: Winter mods

Going to solid mounts. Did you and if so who's? Did you pull the exhaust manifolds? Looks like a job because of the drivers side front bracket that supports the alt.

I done the driver's side with the motor in, all you need to take off is the fender well.

Thanks for that link. Lets see, crazy glue, masking tape, some new swear words, modified wrench, couple of days, done. Think I'll start second Tuesday of next week. Oops, can't do that, already started. Glad to know you did it without removing the manifold. That helps.

Re: Winter mods

im doing it while the engines out. but i would of had to pull the manifold off but i unbolted the mount from the block . if you do that you could avoid pulling the manifold off, makes a little more work but its worth it

Re: Winter mods

I ended up pulling the engine to do mine. I had most of it apart anyways to do the trans and heads. Took me 10 min. to do them once the engine was out. Looks like a pain with the engine in there. Are you just doing the driver side? Good luck Don. Cant wait to race up there with you next year.

Re: Winter mods

I do not want to pull the engine and, if at all possible, the exhaust manifold. Gonna try it as it sits. I want to get this part done so I can go ahead with the rest of my mods. 3" DP cat muffler and tail pipe. HD front drive line (which has to come out for the mount anyway). Plus a couple of maybe mods. We'll see. I plan on keeping everyone advised on how this goes.

Thanks for all your comments.

Re: Winter mods

i have a broken mount on my Syclone, but after looking at it i fabbed an engine strap down for it, cause i didn't feel like spending all that time on a stock engine

Re: Winter mods

Did you ever get your 12 yet?
I want to be there next year and record that for you. I am sure with your new mods you should be there. Take care Don and good luck on the mounts. They look like a bitch with the motor still in.

Re: Winter mods

Doing it in thje truck isnt terrible, just need to remove the fender well. my advise unbolt the mount from the block and lift the motor up so much easier then trying to fight the mount bolt first then upbolt it form the block

Re: Winter mods

The mounting pads suck to with the engine in the truck (ie converting to JS style motor mounts) because of the nuts in the frame. The stock ones aren't horrible, but the rubber sometimes gets in the way.

I used urethane mounts and haven't had any problems, I bought all the parts before the melting urethane melting problem was known, so I just used them. I use the stock shields and I added a heat blanket. I did two 500 mile trips and mine still look new. I am also going to wrap mine in header wrap as well.

Re: Winter mods

1/2 way to removal on the drivers side. Will resume work tomorrow (Fri). If I lower the dif as some have suggested how the heck do I reattach the nut on the front, drivers side, support bolt where it goes into the frame? I can touch it but if that thing isn't welded then I wonder if I'd ever get it started back on the bolt.

BTW if JS mounts aren't avail who provides the next best? (JS is busy making down-pipes, one of which is mine.) I've emailed him with no reply yet, only been a couple of days.

Sorry for the late reply. Best time in '06 was 13.000 at 103. Can't get any closer. And yes, mounts are a bugger to say the least.

Re: Winter mods

Progress. I removed the front bolt, drivers side supporting the dif and the support piece on the pas side. This allows the dif to rotate down just enough to allow good access to all the frame bolts. I did not take out the half-shafts. See pics.

Having done this, my version of what others have suggested, I would second the recomendation. Should make install much easier as well.

What's funny is I'm having trouble even finding the bolts to the block.:rotf: Ya I know behind/under the heat shields...

Re: Winter mods

Well they're out.

Now that they're out, piece -o- cake. Kinda like the thing you wish on your worst enemy...

For sale, cheap, stock, slightly used, OE, Sy motor mounts.

Re: Winter mods

Buy Dons and you can have mine for free.LOL
Glad to see you got it. The solids should go in easier. Did you get the exhaust yet?
You should have your truck on the road way before mine, let me know the difference from the solids to the stock mounts.
