Why do you use a boost controller?

Just wondering why you guys use a ans boost controller or one like it? Does the stock turbo not operate at full power stock? Is a blowoff valve a part that should be mounted with the stock turbo?

i used an hks evc ez for about a year and a half. it was the biggest waste of money i've spent on the truck.
by far the best boost controller i have used is a granger valve($8) with a bleeder. spool is insane b/c the wastegate doesn't see any pressure until full boost. it spikes less than 1/2 psi. i can also hold full boost during a powerbrake.

blow off valves aren't necessary but can save big turbos from self destructing due to surging. my stock turbo has over 150,000 miles on it and is still tight as a drum.

I had the HKS EVC III on my truck with a ext WG till the stepper motor crapped out.. It was fine. Boost was there immediately, rock solid boost curve, etc... The immediate spoolup mighta had more to do with the 9/11 TC though.


The things I DIDNT like about it was the fact you couldnt adjust it "on the fly". Had push puttons for adjustment. I woulda rather had a control knob.


I have a miniature pressure regulator now to manually adjust boost. Its spikes less than .5 lb and is rock solid. Doesnt look all racey and pretty like the EVC but didnt cost me squatt either.

Only drawback is having to remember to adjust it each time there is a temp/weather extreme.

Is this an inherent drawback to all grainger valve/bleeder valve setups as well?

With the above setups, do you also completely loose the ECM's ability to reduce boost? Thanks.

To ans both your questions... Yes.. I havent tried the "bleeder valve" but Ive checked it out and I believe it works the same way the regulator Im using works..

I use a regulator made by Swagelock corp. I got it for "free" but it is a VERY expensive (~$350.00) SS reg. Its accurate and fast acting.

NO ECM boost control what so ever. Im ALWAYS watching the gauges so when I take myclone out I turn the boost down a couple of pounds do a WOT run and adjust boost up to ~16psi. Kinda a pain but better than dropping ~$400.00 on another boost controller that I was only so-so happy with.

If you have a good wastegate & proper turbo, bleeder valve setups will work fine.

I do NOT (I can't say that any louder) recommend them for stock turbo trucks. They make for faster spool up, and *some* control, but the spikes are more violent from what I've seen, and every one i've seen DOES spike. The stock turbo has WAY too high of backpressure, with a small wastegate. Ask me how the stock motor in my old Syclone blew up...

stock turbo, a good ext wg and a bleeder valve here.

so much fun, when i had a tranny. 20psi in first gear, and got there super fast.

51k miles, catastrophic engine failure due to chronic spikes & overboost from one of the 'good' bleeder valves.

I'd add another downfall as the computer cant adjust the boost any. Even worse if you only have a 2bar map, as it wont know how much boost it has and how much fuel to add

Brian G, what about the Dawes Device mentioned above? Do you think that this thing could be used safely on my stock truck? The Dawes website says that it is not a bleeder and that is has very good control over boost spikes. What do you think?

The dawes device is a grainger valve(check valve), and it will spike with a stock turbo/wastegate, but I'll bet it'll spool up a PTE turbo pretty quick without much trouble, we'll know for sure when my 63 arrives.

Yes, it's as Mark says. To make the stock wastegate/turbo stuff work awesome, it really requires some custom coding in the chip, per truck. Once you get a GOOD turbo/wastegate setup, aka PTE etc, the bleeder setup can work great. The PTE setup has VERY low backpressure, a high flowing wastegate and a high pressure actuator. It is probably the most ideal situation you could have for boost control.

I've seen like 5-10 different bleeder valve setups that claim to be SOOO much different than every other one out there, and are all alike in their explanations. Yes there are some differences, no it won't help in a stock turbo syty situation. I used one of these type of devices in my Syclone when it was stock. Worked great for spool up. Worked great for deadly spikes & creep as well. At 3-4 shift, you could get a 20-22psi spike... frickin' beautiful, boost control via your throttle at that point.

I have a gutted cat on my ty and I had great boost control, with the ultimate. I was getting overboost all the time before.

PTE has been working on this for a long time and have developed quite a nice setup, I bought my te44 when it was still up in the air, when they would be done. You don't need an external, with their combo...it is a custom built turbo,downpipe,wg....for our truck.

Yep, it already has an integral wg.

It comes with a new stiffer wg solenoid. I haven't heard of anyone using the ECM to control boost with this setup? It really depends on what chip you have.

No need for external wg, with their combo.
I would normally say external is best, but from what I hear about this one...its probably the only integral wg I would *like* to use.

Regarding chip stuff, the Ultimate works for many. Every truck is different, and it is impossible to solve every issue. Custom (for EACH truck) programming is a solution, but it can be an expensive, time consuming one. Additional tuning work can help in either case. For example, adjusting wastegate rod, adding wastegate springs, adjusting fuel pressure for best performance & boost response.

The integral wastegate used on the PTE setup is the *same* one used on the Terry Houston Buick kits. It has been used into the EIGHT second range in the 1/4. Yes you read that correctly. I've seen nothing but good control from it on a Syty. It has about a 15.5psi base boost spring. This is important, because the farther you get from your base boost, the less control you will have. Stock ECM/solenoid control of the boost is definitely possible, and I have done it, but it requires chip programming *for* that turbo/wastegate. I'll be doing that for the 50# chips. As I mentioned before, It's my opinion that a bleeder valve/ANS control would provide good enough control for the PTE setup as well. Buick guys been doing it for a while now.

If you had a 3" DP for the stock turbo like I do, boost control is excellent with the Grainger valve. :smile:

I only use the valve to help spool up the truck. Boost control for me is the rod length.

My truck is finally flying with all 6 cylinders firing now. :smile: 101.62 mph last week
