Weird electrical issue.

Blow Me?
So last night my truck started doing something a bit silly, I noticed that my dome light wouldn't go off when my headlights were on. The first thing I thought to do was check my dimmer dial, but when I turned that all the way on (which normally makes the dome light come one) the dome light turned off and the floorboard lights came on. It's an either or thing. Even stranger, when the dome light is on (dimmer not turned past the "click" for all on) my cigarrette lighter outlet doesn't get power.

Strange, I wonder if some wires were screwed up when my stereo was stolen?

Re: Weird electrical issue.

Damn, with three identical responses I thought I'd found the first easy problem with my truck. No luck, I checked all of my fuses, everything is good.

Yikes, I'm going to have to get one of those test light thing-a-ma-bobs and learn to chase this stuff down.

Re: Weird electrical issue.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it this weekend. Are they just bolted to the firewall? I've never looked down there too closely but don't remember much except the fusebox.

Its right above the E brake pedal when its in the up position (E brake not applied). Position yourself best you can on the floor of the truck with your head just under the dash and look straight up to your right above the E brake pedal. Its a 10mm bolt that holds the lower corner of the dash in. Youll see it (youll prolly need a flash light/drop light though).

You said you checked your fuses but this sounds REAL similar to what my truck was doing when I first got it and before I found the mailing list (syty land hasnt been the same since either :D ). After testing and tracing circuits I started pulling fuses and looking at the contacts in the fuse panel. Sure enough one of them (dont recall which one) was FUBAR and not making good connection to the fuse which had me chasing my tail since the fuse wasnt actually blown just not making good connection in the fuse panel. Pull the fuses and check the connections where the fuses plug in to (BTW, youll need a flash light/drop light to see the terminals in the fuse panel).

Re: Weird electrical issue.

im having the same problem now. it happened when i plugged a car charger in the cig lighter. i checked all the fuses and ground. all good. when i open a door, the radio turns off, and my floorboard lights come on like they are supposed to, but the dome light doesnt. after i close my door the radio comes back on but it gets reset back to 12:00 and i lose all my presests. after i turn my headlights on, i try to flip the fog lights switch, my fog lights dont come on and my dome like does. then when i try to honk my horn, a weird buzzing sound comes on and the dome light comes on too, but goes off after i let go of the horn. im stumped...

Re: Weird electrical issue.

Haven't figured mine out yet either but it did start happening right after I plugged an air pump into my cigarette lighter, which stopped working shortly after that. I wonder if it's related?

Re: Weird electrical issue.

I had all those some issues and it was my radio. put a new kenwood in and I have been problem free for a while now. I only drive it at night so its got plenty of time to act up if the problem is still there.

Re: Weird electrical issue.

Well it's certainly not my radio, a thief was kind enough to help me troubleshoot the problem by stealing it. Guess it's not all bad news then :)

Re: Weird electrical issue.
