venting dist. cap

can't remember who on here said that they drilled holes in their dizzy cap to remove moisture but i did the "search" on here and came up with nothing. i did google it and came up with a few forums that talked about it.

i just got through doing it on my ty and noticed a lot of moisture in side the cap.
not only that but i noticed a brass tip on the cap from the plug that is on the passenger side closest to the rad (sorry, i don't know my firing order) was brown and the ones on both sides of it were browning. is the moisture the cause of it?

i did do a tune-up recently, only i did not replace the cap and rotor cause i did not know the msd kit part #. my dizzy is msd pro billet and i'd like to keep it all msd. i also heard to stick with only brass terminals.

any thoughts? no need to make an appointment.

I drilled mine before, just 2 holes in the top, 180 deg.'s apart. I can't say that it helped prevent corrosion.
I think the reason to do it is to prevent ionization of the air in the cap which can lead to crossfire.
If you drive in the rain I wouldn't recommend doing it.

I've also done the Ford Taurus rotor mod. with good results. (IMO, idle was much smoother)

I drill mine but notice no difference. Might be different once I get my new build running.

Ford Taurus rotor mod?? Whuzat...

Yup, but in the rain it would be a no-no as mentioned but I doubt much rain would get back there. I suspect we're talkin' much higher performance systems than what we normally run.

well mine was wet on the inside even before i drilled the cap, wether it was raining or not so hopefully the rubber vent tube i put will help keep the moisture away or to a minimum.

Re: venting dist. cap

Thanks. I'm gonna try that because I have that same issue. (Cap terms are "burnt" only on one side.)

I haven't heard of drilling holes in a cap before. If your having moisture problems I would spray a LITTLE WD-40 in there and that should take care of it. Water displacement, that's what the WD stands for.

i will try that as well. it's been raining all week so i will check it to see if there is any moisture since i drilled. thanx for the "wd" tip.

The MSD dizzy is already vented on the bottom plate. Spray some WD 40 in the cap as previously mentioned.

i noticed the vent on the bottom plate, but i (for some reason) thought it was venting the (wait for it, wait for it) crankcase. now, is wd the best lubrication for this or can i use royal purple? threw away all my cans of wd and replaced with rp?
