Under the hood insulation?

Re: Under the hood insulation?

So just to follow up on my own post from 4.5 years ago...
I ordered the one from LMC just for the hell of it, and this is the goofy crap that showed up. Just an ugly square piece that looks worse than casino carpet and feels like a home AC/furnace filter. If you google hood insulation, there's a bunch of images of nice OEM looking pieces with ford, chevy, vette, camaro, mustang logos, etc... Are there really no options for us other than the shabby stocker, or this monstrosity from LMC? I wonder if I can paint this thing with that Krylon flat black high temp BBQ paint? I don't really wanna spend $40 to find out and then still have to try to cut it to fit.

I'm sure a really nice one isn't all that necessary, but I wouldn't mind popping the hood and seeing some nice insulation with a Typhoon logo. This is where I put my William Wallace warpaint on and try to convince people on here to go in on getting custom ones made for a stupid amount of money! Who's with me?!?!?! (insert Howard Dean araahhhh!!!!) ...no? alright.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

Try these. The QuietRide series or AcoustiHood. I think that's what LMC sells. They have a hoodliner with Syclone logo as the very first pic. Looks NICE! They have Typhoon and Sonoma GT, also.

The one LMC sells is the one I posted the pic of. It's basically a 4'x4' piece of a furnace filter that looks like it was used as a chimney sweep.

I checked out that QuietRide site before I posted this thread, but when I looked, they didn't have anything for the S series trucks listed, it said "coming soon". That Syclone hood liner looks awesome!

However, my concern is that it's "high temp" ABS plastic. The google machine says ABS melts at 221*F which has me a lil leary. Even with a turbo blanket I think a WOT blast would melt it. I shot em an email and asked them to define "high-temp ABS", and if they'd replace or refund it if it melted. I'll update the thread if/when I hear back from them.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

Sorry. LMC also sells what I posted. I found it as a result from lmctruck.com when searching Google. I guess I just assumed you had seen them also.

Summit sells a universal kit that includes material that looks much closer to oem-type material on GM cars and trucks. I'll see if I can find it again.

This is it:

Metro Moulded Hood Insulation HI3 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing

That's not what you have already, is it?

I believe Dynamat? also offers a product in 1/4" and 1/2" thickness. A synthetic foam. I'm not sure it's what you're looking for, though. This seems like it's more audio-based, still.

Nah, I didn't see Quiet Ride liner anywhere on LMC when searching from their home page... It's funny, I never have a problem finding anything on Rock Auto. LMC, I feel like they OCR scanned their paper catalog and said "meh, good enough!" and then threw in all the misc stuff at the bottoms of pages.

The one you posted from summit looks like a nicer version of the same thing I got from LMC. If I didn't already send mine back, I'd take a pic of it under the hood to really show how bad it looked. I'd rather keep a scuffed up dirty stock liner than replace it with some clunky inch thick "blanket".

All I was looking for was a new oem liner, but those are NLA... The one below was made out of aircraft firewall material, and were available for our trucks, but the guy making them passed away.

I'll see what Quiet Ride has to say about the ABS plastic, and go from there. Dynaliner would be a last resort just cause I'm not fond of their branding all over it.

I dunno... I googled my ass off and couldn't find a new stocker anywhere.

I already checked my local GMC dealer and after the guy told me he's never heard of a typhoon and am I sure it's a GMC?, I had him look it up for a Jimmy, and he said they didn't have any and couldn't get them anymore. Then I went to the chevy dealer, and after the guy was done scoffing at why I would want to put a new hood liner on a 25 year old truck, he said they were discontinued and no one in their chain has one. I really do love the parts guys at these dealerships hahaha... It doesn't matter the dealer, they all act annoyed that you're there asking them to do their job.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

Tell me about it. Last time, I ordered a part at the local Chevy dealership and the guy I ordered it from was on vacation when I went back. This was the convo:

ME: Hey. Need to pick up a part I ordered on Friday.

HIM: Ok............who did you order it from?

ME: Uhhhh???? The guy on the end with the gray hair....???

HIM: Oh....... Well he's gone on vacation this week(expecting me to say... Oh ok. I'll come back when he gets back next week)

So I look at him, eyes wide and shoulders shrugging, and say..... Okay???? Did my part come in? Is it here? It's been 5 days?

HIM: Uhhhh. Well, what's your last name?

Mf'er. That should've been his first response. "I need to pick up a part...." "ok, what's the name?". But no. He wanted to try and put me off and not do his job. I get this shit every time I go there.

The time before, I needed a large caulk gun tube of RTV. He says they don't have it and never even looks. The Grey haired guy says yes we do, it's back here. Guy 1 goes, comes back and says no. Not there. We're out. At this point I tell him forget it, I'll go to the GMC dealer. So the gray hair guy tells me wait a sec, walks to the back and brings back a tube.

It was literally 2 spots over. Instead of 1a,it was in 3a. But the lazy ass never even looked. Gray hair made sure to point that out to Lazy Bum. I get the same kind of bs from 2 out of 3 guys there every single time. The gray haired guy is extremely helpful, polite, knows his shit and he's not lazy. The other 2? They do whatever they can to do as little as possible.

Same guy that didn't find the RTV refused to look up a part for me without a Vin. Straight refused. Again, Mr gray hair comes to the rescue. Ugh.

Hahaha it's gotta be a prerequisite to get hired as a parts guy these days!

Pathetically, I have the VIN of my Ty memorized. A woman at AAA told me in 23 years of doing car insurance she's never had anyone recite a VIN number off the top of their head without hesitation, and then thanked me for saving her a trip out to the parking lot haha. Even worse, I still have the VIN to my old Syclone memorized. Can't remember someone's name 5 seconds after meeting them, but a 17 digit VIN number... no problem!

As for the topic at hand... A guy at QuietRide was awesome enough to send me a small 1'x1' sample of the ABS plastic they use to make the hood liners, on the house. I rigged it up under the hood and positioned it right above the turbo... drove the truck around 3 times about 20 min each, got on the turbo pretty hard to get it good n hot, and so far so good!

I have a cheapy ebay turbo blanket so I'm not sure how much that helps keep the temps down. The plastic does absorb some heat though. Not as much while driving, but more so after you park and the turbo is just radiating heat beneath it. After I parked I came back about 10 minutes later and the plastic was noticeably more plyable but not visually melted or warped. After the 3rd drive, I did notice a little bit of warping at one corner, but that's only because I drilled a hole in it and used one of the existing insulator retainers to attach it, and it kinda sags in that corner.

With a full sized liner properly installed with new retainers securely attaching it to the hood, I don't think you'd have a problem with it melting or warping. Although I can't speak for anyone with a larger turbo. In case anyone is wondering, the sample is about 1/8" thick. I'd probably feel a little better if it was 3/16" thick though. I'll email the dude back and see if they have different thicknesses. Still on the fence about getting one of these. $250 is pretty steep for a piece of plastic and some mylar-esque insulation. But at least it'll look nice when I have the hood up on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck haha.
