Under the hood insulation?

Re: Under the hood insulation?

My hood has no insulation, and I never had a paint issue. Even on the underside of the hood. I KNOW my turbo/headers/downpipe get really hot too.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

Old thread but I am looking at some options. My old insulator was trashed so I took it off and now the underside of my hood is ugly. Any other options out there? I know dynomat like insulation is available for underhood plus I am sure there is something spray on. Anyone have any other tricks or anything they are running on a stock hood?

My ass. Look at it.
Why is the underside of your stock hood "ugly"? I'd rather see a super clean underside of a hood than some redneck undercoated/rhinolined mess.

I just took mine off a couple nights ago because it was torn in several places. I figured at that point it was more of a fire hazard than anything. I'm most likely just going to leave it off. The only complaint I have about mine is that the paint under the insulation doesn't seem to be all that even. There are some pretty noticeable thin spots.

The paint under the hood isn't complete where the insulator was. I don't know if maybe the previous owner put a new hood on for some reason but I doubt it. The middle has primer and thin paint going out from there. I may just throw a coat of rattle can black on it and go from there.

I was just curious what others where doing with this.

That's what I was thinking was going on. I would either paint it so you dont see the primer, or clean the heck out of it. Sure you might see the uneven paint coverage, but if its spotless then that says a lot

OCDFTW;)

The bottom of my hood looks the same way. The paint in the middle is very thin.

Was actually thinkin bout this over the weekend. Think this week I'm gonna take it off and paint the underside of hood white to match. That insulator is really torn up

Re: Under the hood insulation?

I think it has come down to price

New insulator: $40 to $60

Can'o'Krylon - $3

OK, so really it is Duplicolor but you know what I mean.

Hmm..in my opinion, nothing looks better than a clean and new insulation under the hood. You'll prb find that it's easier to order that and replace than to clean, paint, and polish the metal to look good. Also, it WILL discolor your hood over time if you leave it off. Just like the others said, that heat will bake your paint and just cause too many prbs which won't be noticable until it's too late. :)

When I restored my Fairlane, we didn't add insulation until maybe 15 years later. During that time we watched the paint on the hood slowly discolor. It still shines up nice and is show quality, but when you are looking that close at a car, you notice the subtle changes in things like that in the paint.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

I have a liner on my cowl hood. It's not new looking, but it looks good.

Yeah, I am on the fence about discoloring the paint and all. I have heard the horror stories and I've only had a couple of vehicles with it on there but I have that feeling that every auto maker puts it on there for a reason...I'll let you guys know the outcome of it once it is all done.

Re: Under the hood insulation?

I purchased a spare and it had to come from GM Vintage department........
I beleive they are no longer produced, whatever stock is there is it....

That being said, I'd grab one just incase. I kick myself every time I polish the Failane and look at the hood.

I have a Shaker hood system on my Magnum, with the large shaker hole in the hood, and I cut up the insulator to fit and put it back on. It just looks so much better, but also did make the hood feel less flimsy. Plus hood insulation is a flame retardant.
