Holy hell, this thing is kicking my ass here. My exhaust guy wont work on cat less cars anymore. So I put it up on the lift and did it myself. I installed a 4" chrome tip and screwed that up pretty good, it looks like a chrome dick hanging off the back of my truck

Anyway, I got in today and had hoped to drive it to the car wash but, one of my guys at the shop were saying they saw sparks coming from under the truck. When the truck is running I can hear a loud screeching sound, metal to metal no doubt. I put back up on the lift and checked it out. Definitely the flex plate rubbing the starter gear at tip in.

I went ahead and shimmed the starter. Then I left and came back about an hour later and smelled fuel really bad. I looked under and saw it all over the passenger side so I put it back down and primed the pump. Found one of the AN fitting joints leaking. Replaced that. The I get the truck off the lift and fire it up. I drove it around the complex and it seemed OK, needs severe tuning of course. I got it back in and was going to make a short drive to Autozone to get some lug nuts. Wouldn't you know the starter starts making this horrible grinding sound so I put it BACK UP!! I had to remove a few shims. Got it off and drove it to AZ. It went OK. The engine is very shaky, truck is super laggy, turbo makes no noise. I am not going to get too critical until I get some tuning time in but so far, it's ROUGH. Got it to idle on its own though so that's good.

I'll report back soon!

More problems! I drove the truck home last week. It was OK. I spent a couple weeks trying to figure out why it woudln't shift in to first, turns out I had the wrong DRAC in there Ha! So on my way home I kept hearing this awful screeching sound. I was convinced it was the starter hitting the flex plate. Turns out it was the turbo. The thing is toast. I know I didn't buy it that way so I started looking for reasons. For some reason, I have no oil coming from the feed line from the block. I have it at a shop getting looked at right now. I hope it is rebuild-able since they don't make this turbo anymore and the only 76mm PTE sells is a BB for $3200. So here it sits again. Just waiting.

Here it is in my driveway after a quick car wash

Driving it again was a good feeling. I couldn't believe the heads turning and people giving "that look". Once I get the turbo back (or get a new one I guess) I am really hoping this thing will be driveable. I got insurance and everything! Another issue is the rack and pinion. It has a 1991 Mustang rack. I lost a good of my turning radius. That was really surprising. I may ultimately get rid of rack set up and go back to a ZQ8 box and conventional steering. Truthfully, I think it is more of a cool factor at this point as I don't see a huge difference in "sturdiness" of steering. It turns fast though. It is exactly 2 turns from lock to lock. Still, not worth the hassle IMO.

Been driving the TY this last weekend and I drove it to work today. The tune is in terrible shape, mice ate through more than carpet, I have a few electrical items not working. I also have no WB, I even replaced it along the sensor. At any rate, I did some "ear tuning" this evening and at least got it to where I can drive it around without using two feet. I am hoping to ditch the rack and pinion, entire cooling system (swap for stock) and change header configuration on the driver side. Yay, another 2k to spend for nothing!

Any new updates on tuning, driveability etc?
What wiring did mice destroy?
Are you still trying to drive the Ty or is it parked?

Last time I drove it, back in July, I got in to boost. 8 PSI this thing was pulling extremely hard. I parked the truck at my shop and when I got back in to go to lunch the truck sounded like a push rod let go. I pulled the valve covers and sure enough I lost one. I put it back on and it still ran like crap. I pulled the heads about a month ago and found a big turd stuck between a valve and the seat, of course, the valve where the push rod came off. I am not sure what it is or was. I dropped the heads off to John Frey but am still waiting to hear if the valve geometry is right. I bought a pair of Vortecs from The Bronze the other day and I am giving serious thought to installing them and selling the bowtie top end stuff. I also bought a brand new dash harness and a great shape engine harness. I am leaning toward ditching my 4 onboard computers/controllers and going with Holley. I have more wiring at this point than I care to deal with. I am getting too old for complexities in life.

As far as what the mice destroyed, it is hard to tell. I have some door lock issues along with some dash issues electrically. I also blow a fuse whenever I replace the Acc fuse ( I think). Radio is acting weird, Found some wires under the dash and part of the carpet where they chewed. I can't believe they went into my truck. I am replacing the carpet and padding as well. I will likely get it running right before I do all that though. I cleaned it all out and shampooed it but it needs replaced anyway. My main focus right now is getting the Biskit done. All I really have left is the front door panels and the car will be 95% complete, more than enough to daily drive it. Still waiting for my VIN though.

My god, it has been a year and a half since making progress on this thing. So in the mean time, I bitched out with the Bowtie heads and sold them off. I went for Brodix heads instead. Also went back to hydraulic roller. Want things to be more simple. I also, went to the Holley Dominator. Learning pretty fast about it but I keep running into other issues that keep me from tuning. I got a base tune from Sean Krupa that runs OK. It needs some tweeking since our builds are very similar but not exact. Leads me to my main issues which I am starting to believe are not the tune, maybe a hardware issue.

It's kinda rough having been out of all of this for so long and jumping back in to all new stuff that requires a whole new way of doing things. It amazes me how different Tuner pro and Holley are. Logging a simple datalog is a challenge for me. I am trying to do it all more and more but my businesses have grown exponentially and it is hard to find time these days.

All that said, this thing hauls serious ass! Having troubles getting low end spool and launching with more than 5psi but outside of that, this thing friggin scoots. My shop neighbor is a mechanic. He had a C6 Z06 Vette in his shop that puts 750 to the fly. He went for a ride in it with the owner, car sounded NASTY! He came back with a shit eating grin on his face. Said it was possible the fastest car he'd ever been in. I just happened to have gotten the Ty boostable that day. I took around the block and at the time the trans didn't shift out of first unless you were WOT. So i did just that. When we got back to his shop he did not have a shit eating grin on his face, it was a look of awe. He looks at me and says, that is definitely that fastest car I have ever been in.

Hoping to post some videos this spring, summer or fall. I am just glad I got this thing off the ground.

Sir,
Nice read here and I thought I was the only one that had all kind of issues trying to get things to fit. In the process of doing a header/t4 flange turbo swap. I was hoping to be done in may for the Bowling Green race but that has been nixed. If you don't mind me asking what kind of power to you think the motor will make?
Thanks,
Bob

According to all of the math that was done it should be 800-850 at the fly.

The fitment issues are what drove me to the brink of insanity with the Bowtie heads. NOTHING FITS!! I even had to clearance the valve cover gaskets to go around the push rods. After buying a few things three times I threw in the towel and said screw the extra 30cfm. I am pretty happy so far with how it has turned out. I'll have to post some pics up.

That is exactly why I didn't use raised runner stuff on the truck. Not to mention removing half of the motor just to set the valves when needed. In addition if the heads that you are using flow in the 230/240 range on CFM that should be more than enough from what I have seen/learned during my limited time playing with the 4.3. My new heads going on only went 234 @ .500 but they were running 193 @ .300 forgot what the exhaust were they were a little slow around 180 without a pipe but should be ok as the pistons pushes it out. I will continue to follow this post as it is very interesting. Keep us posted on your progress.

Glad I dug into my fueling issue. Turns out I had e85 crap in the filter element on the inlet side. I cleaned it out and it runs much better now. Next up I need to work on the trans tune some. I hate the way it shifts but I am not sure it will get any better. I also can't make more than 8psi at the line. I think my cam is not set up right, like it doesn't have any low end power. I just have to start working it all out and see where I can get.

I got the truck to launch at 10psi and it oddly is a big difference from 8psi. Once it gets past the 8psi it really moves quick in terms of rising boost at the line. This video is an 8psi launch.

Look at this BS!!

Just like that, cost me $3500 because of a bad flex joint!!

Dude, Holy Chitt that is a lot of damage!!!!! Was the flex pipe part of the cross over? That really sucks. Not sure what I can do to help but let me know. I would call Jim Bryne over at PTE and see what they can do with that as it appears that it could be fixed. I would think that you could upgrade it with new Gen2 wheels also. Damn!!!!!!

Already have a 7675 DBB on the way. Yes this flex joint was on the X-over. I went to the place I got it (Siliconeintakes) and they pretty much told me to pound sand. He actually said that those don't come back "too much". I couldn't believe it. I mean I could but it just amazes me how people just don't care about standing behind their work or their products.

I can say this, I will NEVER run a flex joint again!

Just read back thru your write-up again and all I can say is Man you just will not give up. If there is anything that I can do to help let me know. I also understand what you are going thru as I have spent the last three months trying to put my back together. Doing a T4 setup also.

Damn that sucks dude. I've got a set of RPM-Mike's headers and they've got the flex joint but it's the bellows style not that style.

If you want to send me anything I'll tig it for you.

This joint is a bellows with the stainless braid around it. I made a nice solid pipe for it this morning.

Next thing is that I need to figure out how to make a brace for the turbo. My header cracked BADLY! Problem is that it is all V-Band and nothing to bolt to. I know I'll figure something out. The other problem is that there isn't really abnything to bolt to. I am contemplating somthing that suspends it like this 1590283921792.png
