Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Since I have neglected my Ty for about a year and a half now, I decided to start spending a little time and money on it. I recently realized that the way I have the headers set up will not work so I have made an adjustment . I brought the turbo back considerably and now I still have very little clearance. I have two alternatives, cut the cross over and angle the turbo down to clear the hood better and simply re-work the cross over or rebuild the entire passenger side header to bring the turbo closer to the stock location. Its a big bastard either way I look at it and it just plain takes up a lot of room. It would be easy enough to do option 1 and I have everything I need to do the job so I think I'll try that first and see where I end up.

On a side note, I got most of my plumbing in and a new core support. So I should be pretty busy with this for the next week or so. After that, I need to order my radiator and a radiator mount water pump. Should be pretty slick.

That's the trouble with eyeball engineering. Just to many unintended consequences. Not that I'm any better mind you. Keep at it Mike. It WILL work. Hell of a setup.

Narrower radiator and clearance the header panel? Or make one out of tubing?

I did option one and it worked out well. I'll have a good 2 to 3" between the comp housing and 1/4" - 1/2" between the compressor housing and the radiator. It also seems I might be able to run an air filter some how.

Just so everyone knows, I DID use my eye balls to re-engineer this:lol:

Re: Ty 0073 Bowtie Build

Progress has been slow as I have been gathering all the necessary parts. I have to say, I thought I had a lot more room for things than I actually do.

For now, I got the upper radiator hose done. I actually bought the vise jaws and the AN wrench still managed to **** it up so unfortunately I ended up with the Channel Lock special. The radiator is 2" too tall. I cut the core support "floor" out with my plasma cutter and it looks like I will have about 1/2" of play to build a new "floor". I am contemplating having tabs welded to the radiator to mount to the core support " tubes". Not sure any of that makes sense. One thing I wonder is, will the radiator experience too much vibration mounted like that?

Here is where I am at

I also have discovered that my radiator mounted water pump wont adapt to the end tank. I am going to have the mounting plate welded to the tank but we are going to have to fab a "bulge" if you will to accommodate the mount. After that, it looks like a battle between the remote oil filter housing and the remote crank case breather.

Ah dang Mike.... You bought a BeCool.... Should be called a BeLeak... Went through three of them on one of my cars and none of the three were the same, fitment wise... Quality control sucks over there and I will never buy one of their radiators again..

As for feet... I welded feet on the bottom of my Griffin so it can sit in stock style rubber mounts (Beefier ones I stole from the Impala SS)... Here's a pic...

Let me know if you have any more questions about mounting feet...

Oh great. No one ever got back on what they had so I went with the Be Cool. I always thought they were supposed to be decent. Of course what the hell would I know this is my first aluminum radiator. Hopefully it all works out. Where are they known to leak?

Lol... I responded to your radiator thread and even posted a link to my Griffin :rotf: All three of mine failed where the tubes go into the end tank... Put a stock radiator in the car and it has lasted longer than two of the BeLeaks!!!

Ah **** it. Nothing a gallon of stop leak can't fix right?

You have solid mounts, right? There isn't much wiggle room in that radiator hose...

Got a very little done to the TY in the last few days or so. Turns out I had to once again re-route my x over pipe so the water pump lines would fit OK. I got the hoses mocked up and fitted and now I am just modifying the core support to accommodate the new radiator. I also went ahead and cut everything out to fit the new FMIC. I have to say, this job is way too easy with a plasma cutter:lol:

Here is a pic of the water pump hoses

I am hoping to have some free time this weekend to pull the motor back out and double check oil plugs and things like that. Once I verify all that is good, it will actually be time to start really putting things back together permanently.

Looking great! It'll be all you hoped for once complete. I KNOW you will enjoy it too.

The an fitting right about ur timing chain cover what do you have that going to? I'm assuming water comes out if it or does oil?

Oil return from what?

That continues to be a heck of a project Mike. What water pump is that and can you show more on how it's plumbed? I'm curious how it gets its water to start with.

I will shortly. I just pulled the motor real quick last night to verify oil plugs and things like that. Now I am doing final install stuff (I think).

The oil comes out of an AN fitting that was drilled in to the area where the on block filter would go. It will go up to my remote filter housing then drains back to the block through that hose and to the lifter valley.
