Turbochargers for SyTys

After doing some searches it seems like the GTQ turbochargers are very popular among the SyTy community. Personally I would like to know how exactly you match a turbocharger with your build. What different things factor in choosing a turbo for your truck? It would be great if people could refer to this thread and get a better understanding about matching a turbo to their engine build.

Re: Turbochargers for SyTys

you need to learn to read compressor maps and then choose a turbo based on where your engine performs inside the turbo map.

Things like RPM, VE vs POWER, fuel available, spoolup time vs power etc etc. It's a massive subject.

Thats the best way to do it. The EASY way to do it is to copy someone :D

I would like to know what turbo would best match my motor. Personally I would like to be around 22psi on alky making around 650rwhp on 93 octane pump.

Re: Turbochargers for SyTys

Bump...so yea I thought about going with one of these turbos.

67GTQ
70GTQ
72GTQ
74GTQ

I have brodix heads, forged internals, bore 30 over, going with 75 or 84 lbs injectors, and air to air IC. Is it possible to get a 74GTQ in Dual BB?

Yes, they are available. You could also consider an HP67 with a billet compressor wheel. These are newer technology and produces the power equivalent of a GT42R, with the spool of a 67. These turbos have made over 800 WHP, and cost is comparable to what you are in the market for. If you are interested, feel free to call.

thanks,

I want to do it right the first time and be done with it. If I gave you my engine specs and build you would be able to match me a good street/track turbo. Personally I would like to have two tunes. 1 for street on 18-20psi with alky and pump gas, and a tune for track days with 20-23psi on alky and race gas. I don't really have the head gaskets for anything more but I do have the ARP studs.

Take a closer look at the Bullseye power units.....they have some really sweet stuff! They are not BB units, but spool very close to similar BB turbos. They are very inexpensive to rebuild (and not very complicated either). They have the ability to run very high boost pressures efficiently. They also are just releasing their new race covers and billet wheels that flow retarded numbers!

Everyone here uses the PTE housing to get the right spacing, but I got around that with a T3 spacer with 38mm wastegate provisions (ebay) and that combo spaces things out just about like the other housing option. Plus, I dont have to chop up the crossover or anything fugly-looking.

I have a dyno date for Saturday April 4, so you will see some numbers on pump gas and C16 for one of their turbos. If we have enough time, I might drop in a larger turbo to see how it behaves too!

PM me if you want more info.

Sure, you can email or call. Try to include these:

Do you intend to keep A/C?
What stall TC you have?
What downpipe you plan to run?
Internal or external WG?
Stock manifolds or headers?
What intercooler?
Estimate % track vs. % street use.

That would help narrow some of the choices down.

I can answer most of these questions now.

1. I already deleted the AC.
2. I'm not sure on the stall, the previous owner had the 700R4 rebuilt for racing but really don't know how to figure out the stall. I know its a 9.5 locking unlocking TC (precision). I'll look at some paper work and check it out.
Edit Post: Previous owner answered the phone and told me he does not remember but he thinks its in the 3000 range. Possible a 3200?
3. I have custom headers and downpipe made by MPE aka Pennsville, NJ. by MPE racing fabractions)
4. external wastegate (turbonetics)
5. Going with a custom air to air in the lower section down by the air duct/dam. Either made by precision or RPM. (good for up to 750hp) Going to run my own piping and do a custom job.
6. I plan on driving to local car shows, driving to the track and driving it back home after some hard runs. Take it out on nice spring, summer, and fall days. Every once in a while drive it to work. Don't want it an all drag truck, but would like to run 10s. (when I say 10s, I'll be tickled pink hitting mid/high 10s but would be nice to have mid 10s constantly) I have full port/polish competition work done to the -8brodix heads. I also will have 84 lbs injectors, and I have FAST computer engine management installed. This is the cam I have installed:
cam_card1.jpg

7. I'm bore 30 over and forged rods pistons the hole deal running 8:5:1 compression.

With all of that said, I'm sure I need at least a .82 A/R and around 67mm-74mm turbo. My old turbo was a TE45A and its barely used. Need bigger!

Re: Turbochargers for SyTys

the bullseye ett wheels flow crazy amounts of air. check out theturboforums.com for info on the borg warner turbos, those guys over their love those turbos. that forum has more good turbo info than any other place on the net IMO

also look into the turbonetics TC series. they are compact quick spoolers that can support your power goals. if you were to consider t4 hotsides your options will increase also

Good answers ;) Sounds like your all set to go just need to find out a few more details.

Best thing would be to call on Monday so we can discuss the options.

I'm working on doing the same thing real soon! Do you have any pictures of your adapter and waste gate piping?

Thanks,

Re: Turbochargers for SyTys

GTQ 72 for strip and street for your setup. GTQ 74 for mainly strip as it will not spool as quickout of the hole. A killer street turbo for your setup would be a GTQ 67. It would spool killer on the street but would flatten out at little on the big end at the strip.

Your TC would be perfect for the GTQ 67 and a little light for a GTQ 72 and to low for the GTQ 74. A 3,200 to 3,400 stall would be better for the GTQ 72 and GTQ 74.

I have run them all with various setups. Your cam is fine with all of them, but would work nicely with the GTQ67. Mark Shaefer runs the GTQ72 into the low 10s with a built bottom end and a stroker crank. The GTQ 72 handles his setup great.

If you don't want to change your TC and want to spool fast out of the hole the GTQ 67 would be my choice for your setup. It would also get you into the high 10s in a syclone.

Does any one know where i can get a fiting that screws into the stock turbo, that the oil feed line screws into?

Re: Turbochargers for SyTys

if you run anything other than the PTE housing, it will need adaptors or custom headers.

I have a T3 adaptor on mine (pic above) and I am happy that I did this. The 62mm and 64mm Bullseye turbos are making some good power, are cost-effective, and completely American-made.

As an example, at Nats last year I made several passes, but was having issues getting the WG solenoids to function properly. As a result, I couldnt make over 12-13# of boost. I was running a Bullseye CompR 62 (S362-variant) at about 1BAR. If you look at the compressor map for this turbo, I was barely getting the turbo to start making power, yet I trapped 114MPH and it was laying down past 600'. There was more work to be done with timing and such, but it shows the potential for this turbo. If you runt he numbers through a calculator, it calculates that my 4,000-pound truck trapping 114 was making 460ish RWHP - on a turbo that wasnt even starting to work yet.

Today, I still have the same turbo. I have switched to a Turbosmart manual boost control, set it to approximately 20#, and I have more timing in it now. I can definitely tell you that it is a much stronger turbo than I thought. Response on the street is almost immediate (TCI 300-stall converter through a TH-400 AWD) and pulls hard all the way up to 6,000 now. I am trying to sneak up on the tune, so I am slowly adding more boost. Every time I do this, it just gets faster. All this in a very streetable turbo. I have found that my 38mm wastegate is not enough to hold this reliably, so I am in the process of swapping it out to a 44mm gate.

The moral of the story is: learn about your combination, do your own research, and don't be afraid to be 'different'!
