Trans Re-build Help

Ok, so i'm gunna stop beating around the bush...

I'm looking to take my Typhoon's transmission out to have it re-built. I'm in Budd Lake NJ (07828) and I'm looking for a transmission shop in the area that's known to do good Sy/Ty work. I want this transmission to work like it did in 1993 when it rolled out of PAS. I also want good parts that will not break. (Like what George Blake offered in his re-build kits) If anyone offers a good re-build kit like that let me know, I'm interested in a purchase. Also, does anyone know of a good transmission shop near my area (like idk, maybe within 50 miles?) Or if I have to ship it out somewhere to get re-built, can someone give me a real good price? I'm kinda strapped for cash atm, but I just got a new job (which is why I need the truck) I want to send it somewhere who will do the work the right way the 1st time... Since I can see that dynotech rebuilt this transmission to only last 5 years and charged dave 3000 dollars, and it NEVER worked right...

Can someone help me out a bit here?

5 years isnt too bad IMO. Heck, Dynotech saw my trans 4 different times over a period of 5 years  Nevertheless, Im not sure if Dynotech exists anymore since the owner unfortunately passed away late last year, however there are a couple members on here who are confident in going with Chris from CK Performance out in NY. Might wanna see what options he can give you.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

I thought it would cost way more than that to ship a whole trans to him...What does he charge, and how good is his work? I'm guessing he specializes in the sy/ty trans? From what I hear there's a lot of specific parts and specific work that needs to be done to these transmissions in order for them to work exactly right... Seems like these 700R4's are real finicky...I just wanna make sure that I get the job done the right way, for the best price...I have the receipt in my hand for the horror story that was Dynotech Performance's rebuild... from 2003-2009 that trans lasted... I took ownership like around august 2007 i think... The trans was already acting up....and Ive babied this truck, and it died now.

Here's what the receipt says:
1) Rebuild Customer Supplied 700R4 Typhoon Transmission to Street/Strip Specs. - $1495.00
2) Remove, Reinstall, Flush Cooler, Fill, Adj. & Road Test Vehicle - $350.00
3) Flush & clean customer supplied H/S 12" Torque Converter - $195.00
4) 12 Qts. Of Trans Fluid - $24.00

Total Service - $1845.00
Total Parts - $195.00
Fluids - $24.00

SubTotal - $2064.00
Tax $123.00
Total $2187.00

I think that's a lot of money to pay for a trans that didn't work right...

I hope John has a better price than that, and from what I hear, I know the transmission will work as it should.

Chris from CKPerformance might be a better option for me since he is much closer... Who has had work done by him, and how well does he build a Sy/Ty trans, and does it work exactly like it should? (im very concerned about shift points and this mysterious 3-4 upshift at WOT)

Welcome to the world of transmissions dude. Im not sure what you "think" you should pay, but $1495 for a Street/Strip trans doesnt sound bad at all to me.

My first trans cost me $2251.25 w/ new converter and lasted 1 year. This was not a Dynotech trans and finally crapped out after it was stolen in April '02.

My Dynotech transmissions always shifted and operated correctly. Honestly if there was something wrong with the transmission after your previous owner paid for it, they should have taken it back and had it fixed, I wouldn't blame Dynotech, I blame the owner for just dealing with it.

I will direct Chris to this thread and see if he would like to put his :2cents: in and see what he can offer you. But considering that receipt is 5 years old like you say, I would expect the price to go up, not down.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

not sure on ck,all i can tell you is this...spend the money and let ONLY a guy that knows about a syty trans to build it or you will be pulling it back out very very soon.Even most guys that think they can build 700 they wont last in these trucks long, but that all depends on how you treat it,there are a few things you can do to make them live.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

Thx for the info, heard anything about CK?
Or does anyone have a review for CK perf?

Also, If I find someone local to do the work, does anyone sell a parts kit?

I had CK 700r4 and now CK 4l80e. The 700 took countless boost launch and many mid 11s pass before the 2-4 band went.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

Both can do the job. John is specifically a syty builder. Chris at CK builds alot of taxicabs trans and specializes in AOD's and 2004r's. He's got a book out on 200's.

In the trans world, you get what you pay for.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

My goal for the truck is to eventually run a low 12 (12.25) so I dont think I'll need a sytyperformance race trans. I also dont know if a completely bone stock trans would take that? So when I get the rebuild, I'll need whatever parts would be reccomended for that type of power... This truck will be DD, and I DO NOT beat on my truck... I never go WOT while daily driving the truck. I'm planning on this summer to occasionally (once every couple of weeks) visit the local strip and run a couple passes with good cooldown time in-between. That's about it... So I dont think I need a trans that costs so much extra to take the kind of beating that the sytyperf. one takes, seems kind of un-necessary...

So the concensus seeems to be CK Performance? Anyone have their number? Also would they be able to get the parts or is there a special re-build kit I need to buy from a vendor on the boards?

Re: Trans Re-build Help

FYI, the trans came with a tq capacity of 370 and IIRC, the truck made 390.

Good luck. Chris will be there when you need him. Also a ty weighs 400 lbs more than a sy.

they should have all the parts you will need.

As for running 12.25 in your truck, good luck, while it runs ok it still doesn't run perfect. A stock tranny will handle anything but boost launches. No 700r4 will handle countless boost launches and the only way to go fast in these bricks is to launch them. :)

id consider pricing out a used known good stock tranny, comparing that to rebuilding yours and make a decision from there. Since this is your DD you want it done and fixed asap, which swapping another tranny in will probably help you get. Getting one built will take time no matter how you look at it, however some builders take WAY longer than others.

maybe ask Tom from NY (BBW808) if he has any known good stock trannys, he needs to make a trip down this way anyway, maybe we could convince him to kill two birds with one stone. :D

I gave you the link in post #3, click on it.

There is nothing special that Chris shouldn't have or be able to get himself, in terms of parts.

Re: Trans Re-build Help

Not sure how much of a mechanic you are but, I re-built my trans the first year I owned my truck. I did it with a book, a tiny bit of input here and there from a local builder, and my trans lasted me 2 1/2 solid years of constant abuse. Clutches gave out eventually. After that, they seem to do well except for last time. I had built it up, spent some bucks, two months later I snapped my input shaft. I don't care who you go to, no one is going to predict a failure like that it could happen at any time to anyone. If I were you I'd just do it yourself. If you need a few to no hard parts you are looking at about $4-600 in parts minus TC. On top of that, it really isn't rocket science. I am not going to say it is a total piece of cake but as long as you stay clean and organized you will be fine. Oh yeah I forgot to mention, I didn't even have SYTY.NET at the time and it was the first transmission I had ever built.

Well, I know that currently it wont get even near that number... Thats my goal number to eventually achieve... I need to do a lot of tuning and tweaking before I can even get close to that number. lol I mean, as of right now the truck wont even do the 1/4 mile in 5 minutes with this trans :rotf:

Re: Trans Re-build Help

what is the transmission doing that makes you think its time for a rebuild , slipping , shifting hard / snapping your neck type shifts which is normal and good on these trucks , lost any forward gears or reverse ? gotta tell these guy's on the boards what up or they can't give some better idea's . good luck with it. and if it was me i'd give the rebuild process a try myself like mike was saying , as long as you have the time and space along with the tools.
